Why Aelisha Binderim chose Dougherty

Many stories have filtered down through the ages of how the town of Dougherty received its name. Our favorite and the best one by far is that of a railroad man, by the name of Dougherty. Said man jumped off the train and fell in the mud. A fellow Santé Fe Railway worker shouted out “There lies Dougherty” and voila...

More plausible, is the story that the town was named for early day Texas settler, Bill Dougherty. Perhaps the town was named after the prosperous and prestigious banker from Gainesville Texas, William Dougherty. Regardless of the true version, the common trend is that all stories lead back to the given name Dougherty in 1887.

Canyon Hill Cabin was originally built in the 1930’s and has preserved its little dirt road, also known as Canyon Hill Lane, named by my grandparents Danny and Betty Stephens.

We welcome you to enjoy our little paradise, while exploring local attractions and the waters of the Arbuckles!

Liked the cabin

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was very roomy. It had an excellent and well-appointed kitchen. Somewhat isolated, but close to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area and the lakes in the area. Telephone reception was off-and-on, but Internet was good. Some of the bedrooms a little chilly for a winter stay. Still plenty of room, well furnished, plenty of parking. Advertised as on a dirt road, but there is enough gravel that there is no worry about getting stuck in wet weather. It is really on an all-weather road. We enjoyed our stay there very much.

Professionalism, courtesy, and lack of communication of owners

  • 1 of 5

We were contacted a few days after our stay about the condition in which the property was left. We were told that there was dog hair, smashed pecans, and scattered laundry. Therefore, resulting in the request of a rather unreasonable cleaning fee. Before our departure, we made sure that the cabin was as close to the condition it was in when we arrived. We were startled to find this information out and requested some sort of proof of the allegations. It was strange to us that there is "Dog hair" in the cabin when we had boarded our dogs at the local Veterinarian in Altus, Ok before our trip. However, there was a stray dog that roamed the property but who would let a stray dog into a cabin with 4 small children? Doesn't make an abundant amount of sense in that area.

So far, we have received no response from the owner. We have been very cordial and respectful and only asking someone to prove something that they are accusing us of when 4 adults know very well that the home was essentially the same as when we arrived. To compound matters, it is difficult to hold someone to a standard of "Clean" when there were no specific requests made by the owner prior to our arrival, during our stay, or before our departure or even a rental agreement that would set forth certain standards of "Clean". One would imagine that if you were to leave a property in a general state of cleanliness unless otherwise stated that would suffice for the tenant doing their part. Furthermore, even if we were to go above & beyond and deep clean the cabin ourselves, it would have been practically impossible to do so as all of the cleaning equipment (Vacuums, supplies, etc..) were under lock and key in a smaller closet downstairs. I am not sure of other travelers that visit places for family vacations but we do not travel with a vacuum cleaner or housekeeping equipment.

All in all, I would not recommend this home to anyone interested. Not only do the owners of the property not properly communicate with their tenants in a timely fashion (Which also occurred when we made attempts to stay an extra night) but the home in itself is no baby friendly. There is a staircase leading downstairs that is not able to be "Baby-proofed". The current owners should consider redesigning the staircase to the lower part to where small children cannot access the staircase from any possible angles.

Owner's Response: This guest was asked to pay an additional cleaning fee due to there being presence of a dog and brown spots left on the carpet. Unfortunately we did not take pictures, so we refunded the deposit in FULL. In regards to the stairs, I am not redesigning my home. Part of the unique charm of my our home is that my grandparents built and designed a large portion of it.

A very enjoyable experience.

  • 5 of 5

We had a very enjoyable experience. The cabin was able to meet most of our needs. Only had a few issues, but nothing deal breaking. Was surprised with how much was available for us to use in the cabin. Best part was watching the herd of deer hanging out just outside the cabin. Will defiantly use it again.

Best Getaway in the Woods

  • 5 of 5

Great big place set in the middle of peace and quiet. If you're looking to getaway from noise, crowds and technology, this is the place for you! :) ... although there's wifi you can connect to. Worked better with T-mobile phones than any other carriers; spotty with laptop use. Big open family/tv room - perfect for those with kids. We enjoyed the fire pit a lot! 15-30 mins to Turner Falls and Little Niagara Falls!! Most of all, host Aelisha was very attentive to our needs. Responded so timely over text. Precious country home. If we're back in the area again in the future, we will surely rent this again :) It was perfect for our family reunion.
