Why Aelisha Binderim chose Oklahoma

Many stories have filtered down through the ages of how the town of Dougherty received its name. Our favorite and the best one by far is that of a railroad man, by the name of Dougherty. Said man jumped off the train and fell in the mud. A fellow Santé Fe Railway worker shouted out “There lies Dougherty” and voila...

More plausible, is the story that the town was named for early day Texas settler, Bill Dougherty. Perhaps the town was named after the prosperous and prestigious banker from Gainesville Texas, William Dougherty. Regardless of the true version, the common trend is that all stories lead back to the given name Dougherty in 1887.

Canyon Hill Cabin was originally built in the 1930’s and has preserved its little dirt road, also known as Canyon Hill Lane, named by my grandparents Danny and Betty Stephens.

We welcome you to enjoy our little paradise, while exploring local attractions and the waters of the Arbuckles!

Stayed for 2 nights with friends and had a lovely time! Walmart and Pizza Hut just 20 minutes away.

We really enjoyed our stay! The cabin was nicely kept up and the location was great. Only thing is it says it sleeps 10 and it doesn't really sleep more than 8. Fortunately we brought an air mattress and a hammock so we were fine! There was a little house on the property where it looks like they will be adding more beds so maybe one day it will be able to sleep 10 or even 11! Overall we had lots of fun!

Granparents/grandkids trip

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I booked this trip to take our grandkids on a quick trip before school started. This large cabin in the countryside sure did fit the bill for us. This was the first time I used the VRBO app and it does not work when you have no cell coverage so I would stick with printing off the directions, policies, etc. from your computer. Also the app said check-in was 12:00 noon and the directions from the owner (which I did not print out) clearly said 2:00 pm. We did arrive at the cabin early due to the above miscommunication and I called the owner to ask permission to leave groceries in the fridge until the cleaning folk had time to clean which she graciously gave me. We had a wonderful time here. There is plenty of room for games and a wonderful large table in the dining room where everyone could sit together at meal time. The kitchen is well stocked and has enough pots and pans to feed a crew. The bedrooms worked out great for all of us. They are spread out to give visitors privacy. It really was too warm outside to enjoy the balcony/porch other than very early in the morning but this would be great with cooler weather. We saw deer one morning and a group of turkeys visited on another day. This location gives you the great "country" experience but is close enough to all the activities and recreation areas to be convenient. We did have to pay an extra cleaning fee due to our dogs but is was well worth it to all of us being able to bring them along with the grandkids. I would recommend this lovely cabin to families that need space for solitude and quiet in addition to big communal areas where everyone can gather. Five stars!

Not happy nor satisfied

  • 1 of 5

When we arrived we were told the cabin was.not ready. We waited outside until it was ready after a long hot ride. Lawn was not kept, grass not mowed. The cabin is full of spiders and scorpions. Mouse traps in open sight. I was drinking coffee and looked down and a dead mouse on the trap. Had to dispose of it myself. No AC in the room we stayed in. We asked if we could sleep in a couple of hours before we left since we got cheated out of 4 hours that we had paid for and were told we could, but they would be cleaning. We opt not to sleep in. I would NOT stay there again. Owner knew what time it was supposed to be ready. For the money, No Excuse for it not being ready. I would not recommend it to any of my friends. Many improvements are needed before it should be rented again.

Beautiful county home

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our three days at Canyon Hills. The boat dock at Arbuckle lake was just a few minutes away. We enjoyed the deck and fire pit. The home was clean and had everything we needed to cook several meals. The large living area made it nice to play board games with the family. We enjoyed the Chickasaw cultural center by Sulphur.

Comfortable cabin in the woods

  • 5 of 5

We loved the cabin and the property. It was the perfect weekend escape from the city. We particularly enjoyed the large lawns on the property and the charcoal grill on the patio. Overall a great experience.

Canyon Hill Cabin Visit

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for three nights and loved every minute. This home aways from home accommodated our group of 6 (grandparents, parents, and 14 & 12 year old grandchildren). The interior is lovely, well furnished for cozy conversations, great sleep, easy meal preparation, and just plain relaxing. The outdoors is beautiful, away from everything but easy to get to, and a great place to take walks, just hang out. Thank you for sharing!
