Why Aelisha Binderim chose Dougherty

Many stories have filtered down through the ages of how the town of Dougherty received its name. Our favorite and the best one by far is that of a railroad man, by the name of Dougherty. Said man jumped off the train and fell in the mud. A fellow Santé Fe Railway worker shouted out “There lies Dougherty” and voila...

More plausible, is the story that the town was named for early day Texas settler, Bill Dougherty. Perhaps the town was named after the prosperous and prestigious banker from Gainesville Texas, William Dougherty. Regardless of the true version, the common trend is that all stories lead back to the given name Dougherty in 1887.

Canyon Hill Cabin was originally built in the 1930’s and has preserved its little dirt road, also known as Canyon Hill Lane, named by my grandparents Danny and Betty Stephens.

We welcome you to enjoy our little paradise, while exploring local attractions and the waters of the Arbuckles!

Family vacation for 8

The cabin was set along a hillside with beautiful views. When you first arrive there will be a cabin with a blue roof that you can see from the road follow the gravel road to the right as the house is hidden from the road. Each room has a different temperature. The first room with 2 beds is the warmest which was perfect for the 2 that stayed in there. There is a futton in the living room also. The downstairs bedroom is cooled from a fan blowing from upstairs by the air conditioner. There will be no privacy to this area as there is no door. Kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed. Dining room table seats 6 people and 2 people sat at the bar. If you leave a bottle of water on the table it will have a white ring that shows up on the table. However after it dries the white ring will go away. The little cabin next to the house is beautiful and great for pictures. The kids(15 to 20) loved playing pool and darts. We also had cows that would graze by the drive on the other side of the fence that we were able to sit on the deck in the evening and watch. It was very beautiful and relaxing. The fire pit was amazing you can sit a large group at the picnic table. There was plenty of marshmallow wire sticks available. The leaves under the picnic table do need to be blown out from underneath it for the summer. As with any place in the country you always have a chance to see scorpions, wasp, and other bugs its very normal. Just dont walk barefoot outside. We only seen one scorpion and spider during our stay. After reading some reviews about the deposit this is our 4th time renting a vacation home and i would like to give you some advice always take pictures of each room when you first arrive and then take pictures of each room when you leave. It will help you get our deposit back. This home is amazing and will be a highlight of your vacation.

We loved the cabin. It was perfect for our family. Plenty of space and very comfortable. No cell service but that was good since my teenagers are stuck to their phones. It was funny to watch them walk around the cabin holding their phones trying to find service. My oldest went outside and found a spot to use his phone. LOL!!! The only thing that I feel need a little improvement was the cooking pans need some updating. This is the only reason I didn’t give 5 stars. My family cooked everyday and it was a little tough with the pans that were available. I made it work though. The campfire spot was good also. The picnic table is a little old and I almost fell through it but I didn’t. We will go back. I wanted to take family pictures outside but it got late on us and we didn’t have time due to trying to meet the 10am check out time. So we will be back.

Thanks for sharing your cabin with my family.

roomy and comfy

  • 5 of 5

Loved the location! It was so peaceful, away from the hustle and bustle and had so many of the comforts of home and more! Plenty of pots, pans, cooking utensils, wine glasses and opener, toaster, even a blender, and so much more! Three generations spent three wonderful days there. Enjoyed coffee and cards on the deck every morning, with wine and cards every evening! I will certainly come back again! If you are looking for a place that is comfortable, (not perfect, it has a few meaningless quirks! Not for the types that want 5 star luxury accommodations or for individuals with OCD.. LOL! ) rustic and peaceful, this is the place !!! Thanks!

Liked the cabin

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was very roomy. It had an excellent and well-appointed kitchen. Somewhat isolated, but close to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area and the lakes in the area. Telephone reception was off-and-on, but Internet was good. Some of the bedrooms a little chilly for a winter stay. Still plenty of room, well furnished, plenty of parking. Advertised as on a dirt road, but there is enough gravel that there is no worry about getting stuck in wet weather. It is really on an all-weather road. We enjoyed our stay there very much.
