This gem of a house is beautifully planned to catch the breezes coming in from the east. The house is built around a south-facing lanai surrounded by a hibiscus hedge. Views aren't just of the lovely lawn and flowers; you can see South Point and the Pacific Ocean. We had every meal out here, most of them incorporating a squeeze of lime from the tree in the yard. Our daughter and son-in-law stayed with us a few days. The house isn't huge, but is neatly designed for maximum privacy. They had their own room and bath, with double-door access to the lanai, almost like a separate apartment.
The location was ideal for us, since we wanted to spend time everywhere on the island: both at the volcano and at our favorite snorkel spots. You can drive about an hour to all sorts of great places, and many sights are much closer. The famous black sand beach is only about 15 min away. Mornings we had malasadas at the bakery in Na'alehu, then set up to swim and snorkel at that beach. Even closer to home is a great coffee shop and orchid greenhouse on South Point Road. We took advantage of their morning yoga classes (yes, yoga in a gigantic orchid greenhouse!) and yummy Ka'u coffee. Just around the corner from the house is the Discovery Harbour community center, where you can drop in to yoga or pilates classes. The event calendar is posted on their door. After all the adventuring, this house--simple, tidy, and bright--really did seem like home.
We wanted to stay close to the Volcanic National Park rather than taking the 2 hour drive back and forth from Kona. So we stayed at this property in a quiet district near South Point. The home was very clean, a nice patio, with comfortable beds. Its nothing fancy, but very adequate for our family of 4. There's a view of the ocean in the distance if you stand up on the porch, and a nice breeze in the evenings. We'd stay there again and enjoyed the stay.
I took my family to stay at this charming house in the southern point of the big island. We had seen the pics online but they really do not do the place justice. Each bedroom has French styled doors that open to a large patio and quaint flower garden. The house is designed around a large circular living room perfect for entertaining , the Master room is on the opposite side of the house from the small rooms, allowing for privacy. And the breezes that flow thew the house were downright amazing. It's a quick drive into town for the best bakery on the island and just a few more minutes to the black sand beach( and don't miss the macadamia nut farm). We longed for nothing at this house. If we come back to the big island we would stay here again.
We (with our 2 young kids) stayed at this rental in between 2 legs of our trip in Kona. We picked this rental, at the right price, to further explore South Point. We drove several times down South Point road to feed the horses apples. It was nice to relax, with or without the TV on, and actually hear nature outside. We went on a walk and met some neighbors who said the owners are a very nice couple. The neighborhood was very nice regardless of the instructions suggesting to lock everything at night. Our refundable deposit was processed the day after we left. My husband told me everyday we were there that he didn't want to leave and also wants to retire to South Point.
My family made a trip to the Na'alehu area and were pleased to find this home. It's bright, welcoming, clean and has a wonderful lanai. We spent hours on the lanai enjoying the peaceful setting and the lovely ocean view. The home is well-maintained and the gardens are quite nice. We will definitely stay here again when in the area.
this property is located about midway between Hilo and Kona. It is about 30 miles from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and only 6miles from the newest attraction in the Park , the Kahuku Ranch Unit, which is only open on weekends. There are numerous hiking opportunities from short strolls to challenging hikes.Well known attractions include South Point the southernmost land in the USA,which includes an Ancient Hawaiian Heiau or temple. as well as canoe moorings carved into the lava rock by early hawaiians. This area was a landing place for the first settlers from Tahiti and the Marquesas.Nearby is the green Sand Beach formed by olovine sand. This beach is reached by four wheel drive vehicle or a 1.5 mile hike.Be alert for large waves and rip tides which happen frequently. This is true for all of Hawaii's beaches. The Black sand beach at Punaluu is twenty minutes away and a great place to see turtles sunning on the beach or for swimming and snorkeling. We reccomend you only swim when lifeguards are on duty as this beach is known for strong rip currents. On the way to Punaluu you pass Pahala where the Kau Coffee Mill offers fresh coffee from local farms as well as mac nuts and other products .Just follow the signs from the highway to the scenic wood valley a short drive from Pahala.Naalehu like Pahala was built around the Sugar industry starting in the Nineteenth century. Sugar was king in Hawaii for 100 years but today the towns built by the sugar plantations are struggling to find new life as the only sugar business still active in the state is one sugar mill on Maui.Naalehu is home to a post office , medical clinic, 3 restaurants ,Hana hou Shaka's the Punaluu bakery and the take out lunch counter next to the baseball fields and tennis courts. Auto repair and Groceries at the Island Market are also available..
