The Maison du Cincle (House of the Dipper, although we unfortunately didn’t see one) was a lovely base to explore the Pyrenees with private parking for 2 cars. It has all amenities incl. a huge TV (no English channels), a great washing machine and just about anything else you can think of ! The pretty patio garden is quite private where Jays come for cherries from the tree and hens roam on the other side of the fence. The beds are comfortable and the bathroom with in-bath shower has plenty of hot water. There are electric heaters should the weather turn chilly. The hosts Jacqueline and Jean-Marc are very friendly, helpful and determined to make your stay a comfortable one. Their part of the house is next to the River Neste du Louron. It is quite a torrent and there is a constant sound of water but the holiday house is away from it and after a while you don’t really notice the noise. A pylon crosses over the garden as there is a hydro-electric plant just up the road. You are able to sit by the river at the picnic table if you wish which is pleasant in the evening with a glass of wine!
Arreau is a quiet town in June with a few bars and restaurants (erratic opening hours), our favourite restaurant being L’Arbizon. The town though comes alive on a Thursday for the Market. Nearby are many of the Tour de France mountain tops and a trip to the town of Bagneres-de-Luchon is particularly interesting. Also a 50 minute drive up into the mountains, Egyptian vultures overhead, through the tunnel d”Aragnouet and you are in Spain. Some great walking in the area, birdlife is terrific, many red kites and even the rarer Lesser Kestrel. Also visit the Eagles of Aure, where the birds of prey fly over and among you! 12 days, lovely hosts and glorious countryside...a fantastic holiday!
