About Shauna Nelson

Jim and I have owned our place at the Kiahuna Plantation for 11 years. When I first mentioned to Jim that we should purchase a property in Hawaii, he knew exactly where he wanted to buy. The Kiahuna has never lost the 'old Hawaii' feel and we just love it. Romance and family time abound here. You feel tucked away amongst the trees and gardens and of course the beautiful beach. We actually bought out place site, unseen!

As soon as we closed escrow we flew over with my mom in hand and began enjoying! A couple of years ago we completely remodeled and made it more to our liking.

Jim is the South Pacific Regional Manager of Hain Corporation which is the largest organic food company in the world. He is on the road most weeks so we do enjoy our weekends in our place in Big Bear, California.

Shauna is the office manager for Adams Properties in Southern California. I manage industrial parks through Southern California.

We have 4 grown children, 3 married and our bachelor. We have a 5 yr. old grandaughter that lives in Austin, Texas with her parents and a 10 month old grandson that is about 8 minutes from us who also lives with his parents!

We both enjoy golfing and usually are doing it together wherever we can. We both enjoy traveling and plan our trips a year in advance.

We love our Kauai beach place and our vacation rental also in Palm Desert, CA. Both of these properties we bought with family in mind. The kids enjoy visiting both of these destinations and we hope to spend lots more time in them in the future. Two of the kids spent their honeymoons on Kauai and are planning on returning with their children. This is exactly what we had in mind when we purchased here.

Shauna Nelson purchased this condo in 1998

Why Shauna Nelson chose Kauai

The Kiahuna Plantation is exactly what you would expect to see when you come to Kauai. Beautiful Banyan trees that have been there forever, orchid gardens and the colorful Hawaiian birds that come up to your lanai. It's a relaxing place and I love to read our visitor's comments in our books about all the things they did but they usually just wanted to 'kick back'.

What makes this condo unique

The Kiahuna Plantation has everything you would need in walking distance. We have a beautiful restaurant on property, another wonderful restaurant across the street at Keoki's in the Poipu shopping mall along with Roy's Restaurant.

The Great Lawn is our favorite. You can sit there and watch the waves come in or go on down to the beach. Everyone will bring their beach chairs over to watch sunset with a glass of wine and just share in the moment. Families can enjoy the lawn with little ones as well. It's huge!

The Kiahuna Golf course is also 5 minutes from our condo. GPS systems are on the carts and the course is really groomed quite nicely. Joes on the Green is a great little spot to eat as well.

You can tell we are into golfing, eatting, beach time and eatting. . ..!!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have been coming to Kauai since 1999 and though we have timeshare at LBR, but like to check out other locations whenever possible. Our LBR location had a Friday check out, but our flight didn't leave until Sunday, so it was great to find Shauna's place vs having to get a hotel room. Her place is in an ideal location! Walk out her front door, turn right and walk down the drive to one of the best beaches! Turn left out her door and not only is there an onsite restaurant and bar just down the sidewalk, but across the street from her place (within walking distance) is the Poipu Shopping Center with restaurants, stores, activity needs, etc. She had all the kitchen amenities one could think of including a rice cooker, small crock pot, blender, along with pots/pans, skillets, etc. And search the cabinet near the stove, because other's have left behind various seasonings, cooking oils, condiments, etc. Her back lanai is at ground floor, which is great because grass meets up to the lanai and makes the lanai seem bigger than it is. So lot of breathing room outside. This resort, like most others, has an open air concept (this means no air conditioning), but keep the window slats open a bit and let that tropical island breeze blow through. Along with ceiling fans, there are also portable fans to use as necessary. There were a few beach chairs, children's sand toys, etc in the living room closet for all to share. I also noticed a pack 'n play in the bedroom closet and a portable toddler seat for the dining room chair. You will have access to beach towels, pool (located across the road) and other onsite amenities. We also used the Aloha Spirit Trolley and they knew right where Kiahuna resort was located. This trolley runs from 6pm-Midnight and is on a donation basis (retired driver works for tips. He encourages people to get around the area, not drink & drive and he's a people person). Picture a moving tiki hut, playing music, and picking you up/dropping you off anywhere within the Poipu/Lawai Beach/Koloa area. We tried different restaurants this way, without drinking and driving. We felt very safe there and even received a call on the condo phone from resort security welcoming us and informing us of their onsite availability, policies, etc. Relaxing, beautiful, resort with so many various gardens to meander through. Thank you Shauna for a great place to use during our brief layover.

Perfect spot in Poipu area

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful Mother/Daughter trip to Kauai and staying at the Kiahuna Plantation made it even better! The location is great, on the beach where our surfing lessons were held! Lots to do within a short drive; awesome sights, dining, shops, airport and beaches !!

Shauna's place has everything you will need including boogie boards for the surf and coolers for your picnic supplies ! Thanks Shauna!

Paradise! Perfect in (almost) every way!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I loved our stay for 8 nights in this 1 bedroom condo, on the first floor, with private lanai. It was very clean, comfortable, and very close to the beach, although with no beach view. The view from the lanai is of tropical foliage and the adjacent building. Neighbors in our building and surrounding buildings were very quiet. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes, appliances, and cookware, although some items like a steamer basket for vegetables, and covered microwaveable dishes would be a nice addition. There are nearby outdoor gas grills for barbecuing, which are cleaned daily by the staff. The lanai has 2 lounge chairs, and a table and 4 chairs for outdoor dining. The owners have nicely provided 2 boogie boards, beach toys, and beach chairs. The bedroom was small and almost entirely filled by the very comfortable king sized bed, leaving little room to walk around or set up suitcases, although there are bedside tables and a chest of drawers for those who choose to unpack. No AC, but ceiling fans, portable fans, and screened windows provided plenty of ventilation so we were never overly warm. The bathroom had tub/shower combo, ample granite countertops, fluffy towels, hairdryer, and fragrant soap/shampoo/ conditioner in pump containers.

There are TVs in the bedroom and living room (which we never turned on--too much else to do!), radio, comfortable couch and chairs with good light for reading. The decorations are all Hawaii themed and attractive.

Beach towels are available at the beach-side desk, which was also very helpful with information about the area, and for making a reservation for us for a boat trip to the NaPali coast. The complex is very well maintained, with beautiful tropical plants and huge shade trees and palms, winding walkways, and little lakes. The orchid and cactus garden on the property is a beautiful place to stroll. The lawns are huge, well manicured, and perfect for family games. Lawn chairs there are the perfect place to lie and watch the sunsets. The beach is clean, not overly crowded, and has generally low surf. Snorkeling was good along the rocky margins at either end. From Kiahuna Plantation you can stroll down the beach, and through adjacent properties on walkways, for several miles. The location on the sunnier, warmer south shore is perfect, with proximity to Waimea Canyon and Allerton Garden. Nearby Koloa is a fun town to explore, with history exhibits, shops, and restaurants. Perfect vacation!

2nd time will return again

  • 5 of 5

I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time visiting Kauai growing up and have now made it a new tradition, I hope to continue with my husband. We stayed here August 2013 for our honeymoon and now again August 2014. We own several VRBO properties and always use VRBO when traveling. From our extensive experience, I can give the unit 5 stars. Yes, there is no air conditioning, but this is common for Kauai. Open up the windows and enjoy the beautiful and healing Kauai air. Condo is nicely remodeled and still looks great. They have a few chairs, umbrella and some other items that are useful for the beach or a day trip. Kiahuna also provides chairs and towels, free of charge, at the beach hut. We enjoy cooking in the kitchen, on the nearby grill, making smoothies, virgin and non :) for the beach, etc. They have wonderful Hawaiian shampoo, conditioner and soap, so you can leave those items at home. The unit comes with toilet paper, dish washer soap, kleenex, paper towel and several other items not always stocked in a VRBO condo. Can't say anything was missing. Great price and location. Shauna is a pleasure to deal with and quick to respond. She puts forth an effort to make sure you are taken care of. They have recommendation books in the condo, etc. We will be back. Next time with a little one in tow, due in Feb :) Some of our favorite things - get fish food from Nukumoi Surf shop from Brenneckes and watch the fish go crazy. I recommend doing this over by the sand point that sticks out where the Waiohai beach and public Poipu Beach meet. Go to the right of the point and those fish know all about the food ;) Breakfast burritos are great and inexpensive at the little convenience store under Brenneckes. You can find a path with a mixture of path and street walking over to the Hyatt for live music and cocktails at Sunset on the Seaview Terrace. Or just drive. Keoki's is always great, call for live music schedule. I could go on about all the great things within walking distance from this condo, but the best part is to just walk down the grass, onto the beautiful sand and into the ocean. Also lots of running and walking paths around condo. Amazing amounts of fish and sea turtles all around Poipu. My hubby doesn't always like the sand or sun for his irish skin, so relaxing on the huge lawn at Kiahuna, under the many palm trees gives us perfect access and site to the beach as well. We be back to this unit!

Lovely and Relaxing

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in this lovely condo for 6 days. We were pleasantly surprised at how the "details" were taken care of. it felt very nice to be so pampered. The granite countertops, the well appointed bathroom, which includes soft towels, lovely soap, shampoo and lotions. There was coffee, boogie boards, a working DVD player and nice appliances. It was clean, well located and the grounds are pretty. We could walk to the beach and to many restaurants. The bed was comfortable as well. We would highly recommend this condo.

Almost perfect...

  • 2 of 5

I really want to give this rental a great review, but I can't. The great part about this rental was the location to the beach (although with high tide partial beach entry from the property was closed because the tide comes very close to the property line), but still absolutley gorgous. I would go back just to spend time on the expansive lawn overlooking the sunset/ocean because it was quite simply, magical. The other great part of the rental was that it is a well appointed unit with all the kitchen space/cooking equipment you would need. I really could have enjoyed this unit and made some lasting memories if.... (the downside) it had air conditioning. The plantation shutters that allow the outiside air to flow through are pretty and functional if the outside air is not 85 degrees. It was very difficult to be indoors and cooking was not really enjoyable. It took a day or two to feel secure knowing there were no real windows to secure at night, the unit is essentially open air, but nonetheless I did feel safe and the outside noise and aromas because part of the experience. The other downside is that the HOA did not renew the agreement for use of pool/hot tub/tennis? so during my very warm stay we were not able to utilize a swimming pool or hot tub. For those reasons, no a/c and no pool I have to rate the stay two stars. A/C & Pool would have made it a 4 out of 5.

Owner's Response: I would like to state that the Kiahuna Plantation does not have air conditioning as most of Kauai, which most people enjoy having the trade winds flow through is part of their experience on the island. We have made it as open and airy as possible along with ceiling fans and portable fans if needed. The pool is out of the owners hands, this is an association issue that has been in and out of negotiations. As you can see by our numerous reviews in the past, our place is a beautiful and a truly Hawaiian place to stay. Our completely remodeled and beautifully furnished condo will enhance your Hawaiian experience.
