This traditional Quinta, built in 1871, was restored from ruin in 1999 into an award-winning home. Benefitting from stunning views of Funchal and sea, rooms are large, light and luxurious and the surrounding gardens abundant with palm trees, camellias, scented climbers, avocado trees and dazzling bougainvillea.
Large terraces in the spacious gardens and around the pool are ideal for sun worshippers or, should you prefer, there is plenty of shade from a variety of trees. The gardens/terraces are secure with sun beds, chairs, tables, parasols and a Weber BBQ.
A conservatory entrance leads to a dignified lounge and dining area, with open log fire for winter evenings and French windows opening on to the gardens and heated pool. The kitchen/breakfast room, with laundry room behind, leads to a BBQ area and shower/WC for use after swimming or sunbathing. Upstairs are 3 bedrooms; 1 double en-suite, 1 double & 1 twin and a second bathroom.
Maid service is provided by friendly Cisaltina who is also responsible for changing linen and towels twice a week.
Owner Joy, a Madeira resident for 31 years and with years of experience in the hospitality industry, offers this villa and neighbouring Casa Belflores (each with total privacy) to those wanting quiet surroundings, stunning views over the bay of Funchal and perfect location, where the famous Monte toboggan run ends. You can book both together if you need 6 bedrooms!
Reasons for choosing Madeira: For nature lovers, Madeira has plenty to offer, with superb vegetation, and hundreds of subtropical plants to keep the most enthusiastic gardener occupied. Part of the island has been pronounced a World Heritage protected site, this is the area of the Laurisilva forests which are located in the Western part of the island , an area well worth exploring, especially on foot. Walking the island has become very popular with visitors who can follow long trails along the islands water courses, locally known as levadas. For golfers there are two excellent golf courses, one of which is only a ten minute drive from the house. The capital of the island is of course Funchal, a town which as well as being very attractive and spotlessly clean, has many restaurants for all tastes and budgets, and an excellent variety of individual shops, in addition to several very interesting museums.
Pool heating is optional and costs 100,00€ per week for a setting of 24ºC, paid in cash on arrival.
Pool heating should be requested at least one week in advance. Should it be requested after arrival at the villa, the minimum charge applicable is one week, which is payable from the time the heating is turned on.
This property is registered and has an Alojamento Local lodging license nº20/2012
What a holiday and what a house.
Thank you for your hospitality during our stay. To be here is to be "in heaven".
Beautiful house and garden. The house with a safe and lovely style - we loved it all.
And thank you for a wonderful meal on our arrival.
We will be back next year.
A stunning quinta, sympathetically restored, and beautifully maintained.
Madeira offers everything for the discerning traveller. Short of staying at Reids you could do no better!
We had a wonderful 2 wk stay, made very special by the care and attention of the administration team, very warm welcome of the owner who gave very helpful advise on where to go and what to do and the servicing of the accommodation during our stay. We loved the spaciousness and the views, used the BBQ and ate almost all our meals outdoors. Local transport and markets were varied and excellent. Eating out was very enjoyable, reasonably priced and tasty. Local stores were convenient, bread was super. What more could you want for your holiday. Only neg. comment - anyone with walking disabilities would find access to the very steep road quite difficult.
Quinta D'Alegria was an absolute delight to stay in. Not only was it superbly appointed but the attention to detail was much appreciated. The 'extras' in the kitchen, and bathrooms made our stay much more comfortable. To top it off the owner Joy and Celestina the housekeeper went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. The meals cooked for us by them were delicious and well worth it. The villa is positioned above the town and has fantastic views from the terrace. The garden is beautiful and well cared for and the swimming pool well maintained. There is a fantastic bakery a two minute walk away! We would not hesitate to recommend the villa.
We had a fabulous time during our stay at Quinta D'Alegria. The property is simply gorgeous and the owner, Joy, was always on hand. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
We were not disappointed in any way with the villa. It was in a brilliant location with a view down to the harbour from the terrace. Very well equipped with many extras that are very often lacking from holiday homes eg. toilet rolls, salt & pepper, several spices & oils in the cupboard & a very comprehensive welcome pack. We paid extra for the pool heating which was well worth it as we could use the pool every day comfortably, even though the weather was not at its best during our stay. Joy, the owner was on hand to help with any queries that we may have has & the lovely maid came mid stay to clean & change towels, etc. (another bonus not always provided) Our arrival was quite late so we went to O Rustico Restaurant about 1/2 mile up the hill. Very local with limited choice on menu but very good food, fantastic friendly service & incredible value for money. During our stay, one of our party had a birthday so we went to Mozart restaurant in the Old Town which was a fantastic evening & well worth a taxi ride for a special occasion.
We would be more than happy to return to the villa for a future holiday.
Beautiful house, fantastic hospitality, little touches that meant relaxation straight away. Will most certainly return. Thank you Joy for creating a true 5 star break.
Madeira’s charming capital town of Funchal, with its 140,000 inhabitants, sits in a large bowl that rises from a natural deep-water harbour on the south of this sub tropical island to an impressive backdrop of high mountains. It is the island’s centre of activity, with something for everyone: an opera house/theatre, chic shops, street stalls, open market, wine lodges, museums, city parks, bars, cafés and restaurants without number, multi-screen cinema, a Roman Catholic cathedral dating back to the 14th century and an English Anglican Church built in 1822. This beautiful island is famous for its tropical gardens, two championship golf courses, truly wonderful mountain and coastal walking, ocean swimming, sailing, game fishing, etc. and, above all, its friendly Portuguese inhabitants. Verdant and with varied and stunning scenery, it is definitely worth exploring and the new network of roads and tunnels make this so easy now.
Other Activities: tropical gardens, ten pin bowling, cinemas.
