About the property

Garn Cottages - 4* character stone holiday cottages - self catering

Nestling alongside the medieval farmhouse Y Garn are 3 delightful stone, self-catering holiday cottages, located within the beautiful Gwaun Valley in the Pembrokeshire National Park and yet only 2.5 miles from the shops, beaches and hills of North Pembrokeshire.

Spaciously sunny in summer and log burner cosy in the winter, our holiday cottages are set in 7 acres of grounds which include woodland walks, viewpoints, barbeque sites, a large safe playing field and adventure trails.

All cottages extensively renovated and maintained in an excellent state of decor and have a Wales Tourist Board rating of 4 stars. All cottages have flat screen TVs, Blue-ray DVD players and Freeview Satellite. Each cottage has its own private patio facing the sun and equipped with chairs and picnic table.

Bedrooms are provided with fresh linen, duvets and non allergy pillows. Hair dryers are provided.

The kitchen equipment includes an oven, microwave cooker, refrigerator with freezer compartment, nespresso coffee machine, toaster and an automatic washing machine. An iron and ironing board are also supplied. Use of tumble drier upon request.

The bathrooms feature a full-size bath plus electric power shower, hand basin, WC, room heating and heated towel rail. Bath towels, hand towels and flannels are provided. Beach towels also provided.

The cottages are set within 7 acres of grassy gardens and mature woodland trees. Within the grounds we have laid out grassy trails and tree-lined paths leading to picnic spots and viewpoints. A large open playing field within the property boundary provides a safe area ideal for children to run around or play football, cricket, bike riding, frisbees, flying kites etc.

Opposite the cottages, the orchard leads into the "nature reserve" where areas have been left aside in their natural state to provide a sanctuary for local wildlife and birds. Adventure trails have been threaded through this area leading to dens and hideaways, providing endless fun and exploring opportunities for the kids. Look out for our resident foxes, squirrels and rabbits as you roam the grounds or alternatively just look out your cottage windows to the bird and squirrel feeding areas.

We have a further 15 acres of farmland fields around the property gently rising up the hill sides of the valley and affording views to the north west of the Gwaun Valley, Fishguard and the sea. To the north east, views open up to the grandeur of Carn Ingli and the Preseli Mountains a short drive away.

10 minutes walk from Y Garn is the village of Llanychaer where you can find a beautiful stone arch bridge crossing the Gwaun River. The aptly named Bridge End Inn is a family friendly pub that serves good food as well as local ales and ciders from the local micro breweries. Children can play safely in the beer garden or in the village green directly opposite the pub. Sunday lunches are popular and should be booked in advance to avoid disappointment

Fishguard is our nearest town and is where the railway station at Goodwick connects to the Stena Line Ferry to Rosslare in Ireland. Only a 5 minute drive away it has everything you would normally need for your holiday whether for supplies, art and crafts, church, sport, excellent eating or entertainment.

The annals of history record Hastings as the site of the last invasion of mainland Britain. True, this was the last successful invasion. However, little is reported about the french invasion of Fishguard in 1797 when an invasion force of some 1400 troops in French warships sailed into Fishguard Bay to be met by cannon fire from the local fort. The peace treaty was signed between the British and French in the bar area of the Royal Oak Pub on Fishguard Square. Visit the Last Invasion Tapestry, which has been compared to the Bayeux Tapestry, at Fishguard Town Hall.

There are numerous cliff top walks, secluded coves, sandy beaches and bays within a 10 minute drive and a good selection of shops, restaurants and pubs can also be found.

A little further up the coast, Newport is about 6 miles away from us with its galleries, superb restaurants and craft shops. At Newport things are on a grander scale and you can drive straight on to the beach if you wish. On the way there you will see a sign to Cwm Yr Eglwys where there is a charming sheltered beach which has a 'Famous Five' … feel about it!

In the other direction towards the small cathedral city of St Davids you will find Porthgain, about 25 minutes' drive away. It possess a lovely little 18th-century pub with good food by the side of an old port of great interest to the industrial archaeologists, and of course those who just love the beautiful North Pembrokeshire coastline.

Both Porthgain and Pwll Gwaelod are good places from which to explore the Coastal Path.

Lovely peaceful location with good walks from the cottage door

  • 4 of 5

Very much enjoyed our short stay here. It was lovely sitting on the bench at the back of the cottage hearing the sheep and watching the blue tits (and on one occasion a woodpecker on the bird feeder). We had a lovely walk to Newport acroos to Dinas and then along the coast path. Caught the bus back to

Fishguard. Currently the local buses are free to use at weekends. Also walked locally along the valley and chatted to various people who live here, everyone very friendly and welcoming. This cottage would be great for young children as there is a lot of space around the complex to play and generally explore.

Tucked away just outside Fishguard a beautiful cottage. Well equipped and very peaceful. A welcome gift pack including wine and very fresh eggs from the chickens.

Acres of land to roam and if wet a well equipped games room with fitness equipment for the more energetic. Will definitely be returning

Owner's Response: Thanks for your kind words and thank you for your recommendation. For the sake of clarity, I note from your comments left in our guest book that your "could have been cozier" review comment relates to the barn (games room) not being heated.
