Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 4

Spacious two-bedroomed apartment for up to four people in the heart of Carcassonne’s Bastide, with lounge looking onto the central square, double bedroom and twin bedroom, dining kitchen, lounge and shower room. The 70sq.m. apartment occupies the whole of the third floor of this 19th Century building in the conservation area. It was completely refitted and furnished in 2015 to modern comfort standards, and has free secure Wi-fi throughout.

The light and airy south-facing lounge has two balconies where you can sit in the sunshine with a morning coffee looking down on Place Carnot or at night enjoying the lights with a glass of wine. The room is furnished with leather sofas, a rocker chair, 50” TV, Blu-ray/DVD player, CD player, a desk, bookshelf, coffee tables and lamps.

Both bedrooms have large wardrobes, chests of drawers and bedside chests. The beds are comfortable with deep, semi-firm mattresses, a choice of quilts and pillows, and soft cotton bedlinen. There are bedside lamps and electric fans (and wall heaters for the cooler seasons) .

The recently-fitted kitchen is very well-equipped with four-ring induction hob, full-sized oven, microwave, dishwasher, washer-dryer and fridge-freezer, coffee machine, kettle, toaster and everything you need to produce and enjoy a meal – right down to the wok, the spaghetti gauge and the champagne glasses.

The shower room has a rainwater shower plus a hand-held shower-head in a wide compartment with sliding doors; a heated towel rail, small drawers and cupboards, over-mirror lighting and a shaver socket. A hairdryer is provided, and towels of course.

There are lots of delightful restaurants within a few minutes’ walk, but the ability to do a certain amount of catering “at home” is often welcome, and food shopping here is both easy and pleasant. The famous Place Carnot fruit and vegetable market is on Saturday mornings, with smaller markets on Tuesdays and Thursdays – and there are specialist food shops for other fresh provisions, and three small supermarkets with a good selection, all within five minutes’ walk. The other amenities of the town such as pharmacies, ATMs, tourist information, local transport and car parks, are also within five minutes’ walk. The town centre has many attractive cafes with terraces, and quality shops within the traditional buildings.

During January and February 2018, Place Carnot is having a major beauty treatment, with all the buildings' facades being cleaned and having modern features returned to the traditional where possible. Our apartment is a part of this, and as we would not want our visitors to be disturbed we will close it to applications during the period of this work. We hope Place Carnot will be even more attractive once the work is done!

The main attractions of a visit to Carcassonne are within easy reach, many of them without the need of a car. The Canal du Midi is a five-minute walk to the north and the medieval Cité is about a 20-minute walk to the south. Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Cité is one of France’s most visited sights and quite fascinating, whilst the Canal is so lovely and peaceful you could forget it was also an incredible engineering project when it was built in the 17th century. Local buses and trains will take you to the city of Toulouse, to the foothills of the Pyrenees, or to Narbonne, gateway to the Mediterranean resorts. Discover the 1 Euro fares to the lovely Lac Cavayère, with its beaches, its walks and its adventure activities, or to local towns such as Limoux, home of sparkling Blanquette de Limoux, Esperaza, home of France’s largest dinosaur museum, or Quillan and other points along the river Aude on the way to the foothills of the Pyrenees from where you can go canoeing or white-water rafting. With a car, you can explore the Cathar castles or relax on a Mediterranean beach among many other delightful destinations. Either with a car or on one of the local tours you can visit the amazing prehistoric caves in the Black Mountains, or tour local vineyards.

In December, Place Carnot is transformed into a winter wonderland with ice-skating, Christmas market and lights, of which the apartment has a lovely view.

About Andrea Baker

We have loved visiting France for many years and dreamed of retiring here, and almost realised our dream - we spend some of our time enjoying Carcassonne, and when we cannot be there we are able to have guests who we hope will enjoy it as much as we do.

Andrea Baker purchased this apartment in 2002

Why Andrea Baker chose La Bastide Saint-Louis

To have a home-base in the centre of a friendly French town, on the sunny side of a lively town square, makes us feel very fortunate. When we saw this apartment several years before we were due to retire we knew we had found what we were looking for, and since then have learnt a lot and had a lot of enjoyment in bringing its facilities up to date.

What makes this apartment unique

Having a peaceful haven right in the centre of the action is a great combination. You can watch the life of the town from the balconies, listening to the music, knowing that you can go down and join in whenever you want to.

Fantastic well equipped apartment in a great location.

  • 5 of 5

From the moment I booked Andrea was very attentive, gave lots of useful information and checked all was in order for our arrival. The location of the apt was perfect for us; in the centre of town, on a busy square. Being in the centre expect some noise from those in the cafés and market below. I found the 5am delivery trucks particularly noisy but I am from the country so not used to such sounds. The appartment was as described; simply and tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean, bright, airy and well equipped. The beds were comfortable and lots of storage space for clothes. Towels , including beach towels, were included which was really useful since we travelled with only hand luggage. Thoughtfully, there was also a backpack, food containers and a flask in case you wanted to take a picnic. We used only the local shops and market for our supplies which was fine but obviously more expensive than the supermarket which is a drive or bus journey.

Carcassonne is a lovely city and can easily be easily explored on foot. The train station was a short walk away and bus service looked to be regular. The area was very busy with tourists, especially around the old city. We hired a car (buy a 7 day carparking pass) which enabled us to explore further afield too: La Grasse (gorgeous town, lovely swim in the river, nice ice cream) , Peyriac-de-Mer (flamingoes), Narbonne (large, clean beach), Lac de la Cavayere (lovely lake, walks, cafés and water sports) were some of the notable trips we took. We also took a picnic trip on the Canal de Midi.

Food outlets were varied in the area and everyone we met was friendly and helpful.

Martin was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area and gave us some helpful tips. He was also happy to be 'on call,' for our time there.

No shops were open on a Sunday so plan for this.

The local outdoor pool was being refurbished so not open (despite the website telling you it is).

For a city/town centre stay I'd definitely recommend this area and, in particular, Andrea's apartment.

Wonderful location & excellent apartment

  • 5 of 5

Apartment was spotless & well equipped with everything we needed for our short break. We were very comfortable & really enjoyed exploring the surrounding area by bike & foot and also chilling on the sunny balconies above the square. Apartment was spacious & lovely to be in the central square with so much happening below - and so close to cafes, restaurants, shops and the markets! Would love to return - a perfect base for our holiday. Thank you!

Beautiful Apartment in the heart of Carcassone

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a week in Carcassonne with no car, using this ideally situated apartment to walk around the town and access the Canal du Midi and bus routes with ease. The apartment is beautifully decorated, furnished and equipped – the owners have pretty much thought of everything. Plenty of room for four adults, would not hesitate to recommend (possibly not ideal for people who have trouble with stairs or small children).

Lovely apartment in a great location.

Great apartment but the square below can be a bit noisy in the evening.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for taking the time to give us a review Andrew! We hope you weren't too disturbed but yes a lot of people do tend to gather in the evenings around the restaurants in this great square right in the centre of Carcassonne during such hot summer weather as we have been having - out of high season it is quieter. At least with our double glazing this apartment can be quieter (with the windows closed) than others in a similar position. Best wishes, Andrea.

thought of everything

  • 4 of 5

Andrea's communication was excellent, timely and added value to our stay. For customer service 10/10.

The apartment, superbly appointed, minimal decorated, tasteful (bar the middle earth map lol!).

Seriously there was nothing missing, from dishwasher tablets to shopping bags, to umbrellas, to a rucksack. Lovely apartment, exceptionally equipped and clean.

Well greeted by Martin who was incredibly helpful and and advised on parking when we arrived at 12.15 am on a Saturday night.

Carrefour within 2 mins walk, artisan boulangerie, 2.5 mins. awesome.

Gotta lose a star for noisy streetcleaners at 5am, in no way reflects on the owners but needs to be said.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your review, and such kind words! We would be only too happy if visitors to Carcassonne complained about noisy early-morning street cleaning to the Mairie - we have tried, but visitors might be paid more attention, as the town genuinely wants to be attractive to visitors. I apologise for not responding to your review sooner but I had not realised that you had put a review up!

The two main attractions of Carcassonne itself, the Cité Médiéval and the Canal du Midi, are at walkable distances. The Cité is spectacular, and is 20-30 minutes' walk, including some up-hill, so you might prefer to take the “petit train”. The Cité is a medieval fortified castle town, restored in the 19th century.- it featured in the film “Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves”, as more illustrative of romantic images of the Robin Hood era than Nottingham castle. Tournaments between knights are still enacted for visitors, and it is a great place to visit, whether you want to imagine what it would have been like to live there in the middle ages, or whether you just want to stroll among attractive old buildings and sample the restaurants, museums and souvenir shops within the castle walls. Between the town and the Cité is the River Aude, crossed by the attractive Pont Vieux (pedestrians and “petit train” only – cars use the Pont Neuf) and there are pleasant walks along the river banks – one of these walks passes by Carcassonne’s open-air swimming pool.

Somewhere perhaps better known to local people than to tourists is Lac Cavayere, a beautiful lake area with a little beach (“Carcassone plage”) where you can paddle or swim, and peaceful walks among the trees around the perimeter. It is about 25 minutes by bus for 1 euro each way. It also has some exciting activities - an impressive tree walk, water ski jump, huge play floats – and a secluded ice-cream bar with a deck over the water.

The train station is an easy five minutes' walk from the flat and you can take day trips to Toulouse or Narbonne for full fare, or go to more local places such as Limoux, Esperaza or Quillan for 1 euro each. Limoux: pretty small town with lovely riverside walks and an attractive town square with several restaurants, home of “Blanquette de Limoux”, the local champagne-style wine; Quillan, centre for canoeing, kayaking and white-water rafting at the foothills of the Pyrenees (book boats ahead in high season, if you want to take part rather than just watch); Espéraza, on one of the old Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage routes and now home of the “Dinosauria” museum, which includes a complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton.

Festivals: Carcassonne celebrates summer, especially with music. There is a month-long music festival which hosts big name singers and groups in great venues, as well as local acts dotted over the town, many free and some of them under your window in Place Carnot. Most years (including 2016) Carcassonne sees the Tour de France for a day as it whisks through the country…. and every year, on 14th July, Bastille day, it sets its Cité alight with one of the most fantastic firework displays France has to offer, to the delight of the thousands of people who gather to watch in a great atmosphere.

Vineyards: the area around Carcassonne is home to many wine growers, and you can be picked up and taken on some excellent tasting tours by one of several organisers in the area. Mountains: Carcassonne is in the valley between the Black Mountains and the Pyrenees, and just two of the delights they provide are amazing caves of stalactites, "le train jaune", and skiing resorts.

With a car, you could also enjoy a day at a Mediterranean beach or a Cathar castle, the “book village” of Montolieu, or one of many other attractive areas such as Lagrasse or Mirepoix.
