La Specola: Historical Lake House

Bedrooms 3
Space 4,736 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 - 7 nights

About the property

Beautiful historical house overlooking Lake Bracciano with conciergerie service

La Specola is a beautiful and prestigious historical house overlooking Lake Bracciano from the old and tranquil town of Anguillara Sabazia at only 40 minutes away from Rome.

Recently restored, the house is tastefully decorated with antique furniture and fully equipped with modern facilities (full HD TV 42', wi-fi in every room, air conditioning, Playstation 3, hair dryer, iron, etc.).

La Specola boasts 290 m2 (3200 ft2) of indoor space, 60 m2 (650 ft2) of outdoor terrace, 40 m2 (130 ft2) of outdoor garden and can very comfortably host up to 6 people. The property is composed of 3 en-suite double bedrooms, a spacious and bright living room with exceptional architecture and breath taking views over the lake, an antique fireplace, a very functional rustic kitchen, a utility room, a large terrace and a private entrance with an idealic garden. In addition, guests can enjoy an extensive selection of books in French, English and Italian (to be read on the chaise longue overlooking the lake!) as well as a XIX century piano. Due to its strategic location and its magnificent terrace, the house enjoys unique views of Lake Bracciano and is ideal for a peaceful and relaxing holiday.

The property is situated in the historical center of Anguillara Sabazia in a very tranquil pedestrian area and therefore is not directly accessible by car (guests might consider there are about 20 steps to reach the entrance from the parking). In fact La Specola is not accessible by car and may be difficult for people with walking difficulty to negotiate the slopes. All main points of interest are very nearby at not more than 5 minutes walk: beach and aquatic sport clubs, restaurants, bars, shops, supermarket and parking.

The area surrounding Lake Bracciano offers a wide ranging list of indoor and outdoor activities, as well as its stunning beauty. There are numerous places of historical interest in the vicinity to visit such as Castello Odescalchi (Tom Cruise and Ketie Holmes’ wedding location!), pretty old towns and other UNESCO sites to discover. The sport facilities available range from golf, tennis, horse riding, fishing, biking, sailing, paddle boarding, kayaking, trekking to serene promenades in The Natural Park of Bracciano. But most importantly, the enogastronomy of the region is simply exquisite and can be enjoyed in the abundance of local restaurants.

In order to make your stay unforgettable it is possible to ask for extra services such as: chauffeur, welcome aperitif, touristic tours (Bracciano surrounding or Rome), a cod for baby, cleaning on demand, inhouse massage, inhouse cooking school, inhouse catering services, inhouse classical concert, etc.

- Cleaning Service Prior and after the stay, Check-in/out Service, Clean Linen and Towels and Welcome Pack have a cost of 150 Euros and are NOT included in the total and have to be paid in cash upon arrival in order to avoid an extra commission online;

Guestbook comments from the owner

Occasionally in life you find something special. La Specola was exactly that in every way. We were struck by the friendliness of the people as soon as we arrived in the beautiful, medieval village of Anguillara Sabazia. We were met and welcomed by the lovely House Manager, who escorted us up the ancient village centre and took is into this beautiful place. The apartment was superb. It is a much loved home of the family and it was truly a privilege to stay there. The flat was spacious, comfortable with the most incredible views of the lake from most windows. It was furnished with the antique furniture of the family but with all the modern comforts of today. Everything was there we could possibly wish for and more. It was private, peaceful and a true haven. There were three very comfortable bedrooms, each with an en suite bath or shower room. The living room was absolutely huge and very beautiful. Spotlessly clean everywhere. Outside a pretty shady garden to the front and a terrace to the back with the most superb views! The medieval village was stunning, with character and ambiance. But still well provided with excellent local shops, many cafes, bars and excellent restaurants. Spoiled for choice! It was a taste of real Italy and we felt totally at home there and loved every minute of our stay. We also received very comprehensive information in advance from Paolo which was greatly appreciated and very useful. One of the highlights for us was the lovely House Manager, PeLe who is charming! She looked after us very well and couldn't have been more helpful. We have been back less than a day and can't wait to return. Thank you!

Stunning location.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed staying at the house very much, there were six of us all over a certain age, the hills were challenging but we really did enjoy the house and the views from the terrace were spectacular. The architecture in the medieval town was stunning. Some nearby restaurants were excellent we liked Salus at the bottom of the hill and Zaire by the lake but you should book at weekends. The ice cream shop down by the jetty does a fantastic espresso coffee. The train, bus and boat timetables were quite fictional, it is useful to speak Italian which we did but even so the drivers didn’t know when the next bus would be along, it was quite funny really and a good job we never in a hurry. Take mosquito protection for evenings. PeLe was charming and very helpful, her English is perfect. The cab driver Sergio who met us at the airport and then took us back again was a really nice chap - if you can speak Italian then he had plenty of really helpful local info. We can recommend Paolo’s house, it is full of history and quite unique, the beds were brilliant if you like hard mattress’s which we all did. Take comfy shoes - no high heels needed here.

Beautiful Villa in a Beautiful Setting

  • 5 of 5

La Specola is a large, beautiful villa with gorgeous views from every room. It is very spacious easily accommodating six persons. It is a special place, very unique. The owner, Paolo, makes sure everything is clean and in good working order. He wants his guests to always be happy. PéLé, who manages the property for him, is wonderful. She is kind, helpful, always ready to make sure the guests have what they need. She helped us with all transportation even train tickets. If we needed anything she responded immediately and made sure all went well. The three bedrooms and three bathrooms are large and modern. The villa itself is sixteenth century with soaring ceilings and a commanding view of Lake Bracciano. There are two markets within a 10 minute walk and the ATM is next to Carrefour market. We stayed for a month taking a couple of three day side trips to Sorrento and Venice. PéLé arranged transportation to and from Rome Termini. We also visited Bracciano and Trevignano (which has a beautiful lakeside promenade) and went to the Chestnut Festival in a nearby village. We didn't have a car so used the local taxi recommended by PéLé. We also went to Cerveteri to see the huge Etruscan cemetery and its wonderful museum. I would not hesitate to recommend this beautiful property to anyone wishing an extended stay away from busy Rome but close enough for an easy day trip.

Palatial Residence Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our five days in Anguillara were made more enjoyable because of our stay at La Specola. The residence had all the amenities needed, each of the rooms were comfortable and practical. It was fun eating breakfast and dinners at the terrace overlooking Lake Bracciano. Pele, the property's manager was extremely helpful during our stay. I would most certainly stay here again.

La Specola Villa

  • 4 of 5

There are a lot of things to like about this rental villa. Check in/out was easy, Federico quickly showed us all the do/don't and what all the 14 keys did plus helped with the luggage up the winding cobble stone paths to the villa. Federico and his family run a small bed/breakfast and restaurant (his mom makes great desserts) so he was busy but always helpful. The villa is spacious and well decorated giving a luxurious feel to our stay. The bedrooms and bathrooms are much nicer than most 4star hotels. We found it a great value to slip into Rome on the commuter trains that go every 30 minutes at 3Euro and takes about 40 minutes to right downtown Rome. We stayed 10 days at La Specola and tried a different local restaurant every night within a 5-10 minute walk of the villa and all were very good. There are several restaurants that provided amazing sunset views, gluten free options, great wines at reasonable prices. The villa has a small kitchen that is reasonably well outfitted for cooking and a nice dining table or two round tables on the patio if you wanted to eat in. The local Carrefour is 5 minute walk for any food or wine you want which was good on the villa patio which overlooked the lake. The pigeons were a bit of a pain on the patio but the view was beautiful. There are lots of pastry shops, meat shops and bread shops within 5-10 minute walk. There is not much shopping in Anguillara but lots of paths for early morning or evening strolls. We also found the local mini bus service that costs 1Euro would take us over to Trevignano which has really nice waterfront cafes (not much shopping and the castle ruins are closed now for safety renovations). This bus service also meets most trains at the station and drops you at the waterfront near the ferry (1Euro) which is 5 minute walk to the villa up some cobble stone paths. The ferry also goes over to Bracciano which also has nice beaches, water sport rentals, and waterfront restaurants. The train is a better route 1.3Euro to Bracciano city center for shopping and visiting the castle where Tom Cruise was married. In summary, the villa is very nice, provides a quiet small town feel with lots of options of things to do and easy to get in/out of Rome.

Beautiful Anguillara has to be seen

  • 4 of 5

The property was very comfortable. Views were Amazing. I enjoyed my stay, people in Anguillara are friendly. The balcony was the only disappointment. I would have like some sunshine to sit out in. It doesn't

Mention that it's in shade all day.

Apart from that it was a lovely large villa.

I was very well looked after by PéLé.

Owner's Response: Dear Julie, Thank you very much for your kind review, I am happy to know that you had a pleasant stay at La Specola. I would like just to mention that from the terrace it is still possible to enjoy the sun in the morning and at lunch. Naturally, the sun exposure is longer during spring and summer time. Kind Regards, Paolo
