High Swinside Cottage in Lorton Vale 8 miles from Keswick sleeps 5 in 3 bedrooms

This delightful and cosy cottage has an outstanding hillside setting, and lots of original features and character. The main double bedroom has an ensuite shower room, and in addition the cottage has a twin/double bedroom and a single bedroom with the family bathroom near.

Downstairs the comfortable sitting room has a log burner and satelite tv/dvd, while the good-sized kitchen/dining room is just next door and is well-equipped. There is good wifi throughout the cottage.

High Swinside Cottage was built originally as a farm workers cottage in the 1800s adjacent to High Swinside Farmhouse. The garden offers stunning views over the peaceful Vale of Lorton, with direct access to the open fell behind the house, while a footpath leads in 20 minutes to the High Lorton Village Shop. The excellent Wheatsheaf dog-friendly pub is 10 minutes further on in Low Lorton or 10 mins by car. The location offers wonderful varied walking in the Vale of Lorton - from beautiful lakeshore paths right through to the majestic Grasmoor & Buttermere fells. Meanwhile the biking trails in Whinlatter Forest 3 miles away put the 'mountain' back into biking! (The 3 cottages share a secure bike store).

More Detail:

Entering High Swinside Cottage you find yourself in an entrance hall with coat hooks, boot rack, and a large storage cupboard. The cosy living room is through an inner door with comfy sofa and armchairs arranged around a red brick fireplace and woodburning stove. The living room also has a satelite tv/dvd, and there is wifi internet throughout the cottage.

The kitchen/dining room leads off the living room towards the front of the cottage. It is light and airy with 2 velux windows overhead, and a lovely view from the dining area across the Lorton valley to Fellbarrow. The kitchen is well-equipped for family dining, and has a cooker with ceramic hob, microwave, and fridge. (In one of the other cottage basements there is a large chest freezer, a washing machine, and a tumbler drier available for guests to use).

Upstairs there is a family bathroom and three bedrooms which sleep up to 5 people. The main double bedroom has an ensuite shower room, attractive oak beams, and two windows looking southeast towards the dramatic Grasmoor fells, and northeast towards Whinlatter. The 2nd bedroom can be arranged as a twin or a double with a superking bed (please say which arrangement you prefer when you book). The 3rd bedroom has a single bed and a little cottage window looking out to Lorton vale.

The 3 cottages at High Swinside share the lovely garden with its superb panoramic views, quiet spaces, benches, picnic table, hammock, and 2 wood-fired or solar powered hot tubs! Well-behaved dogs are welcome - and there is a small enclosed wooded area where dogs can run free in safety. (There is a charge of £10 a night for the hot tub to cover heating costs - please say if you would like to reserve it for part or all of your stay).

Keswick 8 miles. Cockermouth 6 miles. Crummock Water 3 miles.

I've done many things in my life (joiner, homeopath, walking guide, smallholder...) I've built wardrobes, run walking holidays, milked goats, made cheese - but always my heart has been in the Lake District, and now I have the good fortune to live in one of its most tranquil valleys. The Vale of Lorton is truly a Lakeland hidden gem! You'll find I live just across from the cottages with my cat and hens - in case you need any help, advice, or free range eggs!

Why Diana Clarke chose Cockermouth

Beside the views? High Swinside has lovely old buildings with history and character. The main Farmhouse was built in 1741 and at one time the Jennings brothers had their first brewery here using the pure spring water from deep in the hill behind the house. Now the water is UV filtered to make sure it's pure, but it still delicious, natural, and chemical-free. The other two cottages were built a little later - Little Swinside was first built as a barn, and High Swinside Cottage was added as a workers cottage. All three cottages have bags of character with an occasional tilted floor or curved wall, and with lovely old oak beams in most rooms.

What makes this cottage unique

High Swinside's views are special - even in the Lake District. The cottages have an idyllic elevated position on the flank of Swinside fell affording sweeping views over the Lorton valley - from Melbreak overlooking Crummock Water in the south around to the misty Scottish mountains in the north. It's a view that makes you want to just sit in the garden and take it all in for a while! The valley is also very peaceful and tranquil despite being 6 miles from Cockermouth and 8 miles from Keswick. You'd expect it to be busier, but somehow despite the great walking and the mountain biking trails near, it gets overlooked by many visitors to the Lakes. Whinlatter's trails put the 'mountain' back into biking for mountain bike enthusiasts (and the cottages have a secure bike shed). Majestic Grasmoor, Grisedale Pike, and Hopegill Head lie behind the property; the beautiful Loweswater and Buttermere fells are close by down the Vale not forgetting Melbreak, and Rannerdale Knotts with its bluebells and the views of 3 lakes. Each of the lakes has a lovely lake shore path around it, and some of the best views can be gained from easy to reach vantage points like Foulsyke, Scale Hill and Low Fell. The village of Lorton with its church, 1000 year old yew tree, pub and village shop is 15-20 mins walk away, and there's a lovely circular stroll through the valley that brings you back to High Swinside again.

As relative newcomers to the Lake District, we could not have come across a more ideal base from which to explore this wild and romantic corner of the region,

The property itself, one of three buildings of a converted farmstead, is set in a most tranquil location on a hillside overlooking a picturesque valley,with the owner living close by in a building where Jennings (a well-known local brewery) originally started up.

High Swinside is a most charming cottage (probably dated about 1800,or before), with comfortable furniture, exposed beams, and with all necessary amenities, including a wood-burning fire in the cosy living room which even at this time of year we were grateful to be able to fire up.

The view from the kitchen table is nothing less than stunning, and provides constant interest in the way that the weather can change rapidly from sunny and crystal-clear views one moment to a misty atmospheric backdrop the next. Shortly after our arrival we tried out the wood-fired hot-tub when the sky was full of drizzle and murk, and it was fascinating and pleasurable in a surreal sort of way.

The owner, Diana,was most welcoming and helpful throughout our stay, and nothing seemed too much trouble.

There is plenty to see and do, whatever the weather, and we appreciated the relatively unspoilt character of this part of the Lake District compared with the more obvious tourist centres such as Windermere and Ambleside. Visits we made included the Osprey viewpoints by the side of Bassenthwaite, the climb up to Catbells by Derwentwater (we would recommend ascending from the south end), the Ravenglass-Eskdale railway (from which you can walk up a ravine to a magnificent waterfall), and two indoor attractions in Keswick - the museum where there was a Wainwright exhibition, and The Puzzling Place, where there was a collection of weird and quirky examples of optical illusions and similarly unhinging artefacts!

All in all, a wonderful holiday, and a rental that would suit not only both serious climbers, walkers, cyclists, etc but also lovers of the outdoors like ourselves who will settle for less demanding walks and more sedate activities.

Fabulous getaway.

Loved our stay at High Swinside. Diana is an excellent host, even staying up for us after a mammoth 10 hour journey from the Isle of Wight when the M6 was closed! Excellent location for walking dogs and close to Keswick and Cockermouth by car. Enjoyed our evenings in the hot tub looking out over the wonderful views. Thoroughly recommend a stay here.

Must see places: Buttermere, Crummock Water, & Loweswater lakes all have stunning lake shore paths around them, and places where you can hire rowing boats or obtain fishing permits. The bluebells on Rannerdale Knotts are a 'must' in May (near Crummock Water) - and are legendary. The views from Scale Hill, Foulsyke, and Low Fell are some of the best in the Western Lakes. George Fox who founded the Quakers once preached to a crowd from under the 1000 year old yew tree in High Lorton. You can usually view ospreys on their nest in spring & summer from Whinlatter Visitors Centre (or ask about getting to the special viewing points). The centre of Cockermouth has lovely Georgian architecture and hosts a Georgian Fair every other year. Wordsworth;'s birthplace is also in Cockermouth (National Trust).
