Carol Heth purchased this cottage in 1983
With growing up and living in the area for so long we know how enjoyable it is to be here. We have a private property and enjoy living here.
The historic area around us has so much to see and enjoy. Whether you enjoy nature, hiking, kayaking, boating, shopping, farmer's markets, the Amish, or relaxing you will have the opportunity for it all. So close to the Susquehanna River to be able to use it or the hiking trails around it. If you want to travel to a big city, we are centrally located to Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC, or New York City. But, you will enjoy the city of Lancaster and Columbia for their arts and antiques.
What a special Thanksgiving holiday in the country. We enjoyed the beautifully designed cottage, the gourmet kitchen, the comfortable bed, and the pastoral setting. With Carol and Pete's help with the seating arrangements and dishes, we were able to cook up a great Thanksgiving dinner for our parents and share it at a table together in the cottage. We very much enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend it for anyone who would like to spend some time in the countryside, and still be close to all that Lancaster has to offer.
Our mini-vacation was much too short at this fantastic rental. Everything was just so lovely. Hosts were wonderful people and very helpful with anything you need. We loved the country/ farm life of this rental, and we will be sure to return. We loved that it is pet-friendly so our furbabies could accompany us too!We highly recommend!!
This quaint cottage is nestled in a beautiful area of Lancaster county with quick access to shopping, site seeing, and delectable cuisine. Pete and Carol are extremely friendly and helpful. Nice relaxing atmosphere to unwind in after a busy day of site seeing and shopping. Watching the deer in the morning and petting the donkeys in the evenings were just and added bonus we were not expecting! Highly recommend this place!
We were looking for a home to rent, with our dog, for a week while we were visiting Lancaster County. We were attending a nearby concert and planning some historic sightseeing. This cottage exceeded our expectations more than we could have imagined.
After corresponding with the very accommodating hosts and owners, Pete and Carol, everything was in place. Upon arrival we drove down a long driveway, past some farm buildings and found the cottage around the corner and were very excited. Inside we found fresh baked scones (delicious each morning with coffee), fresh eggs, a bouquet of fresh flowers, and dog bowls and treats.
Pete and Carol have lovingly restored the 19th century cottage, including modern conveniences that blend in beautifully. It was quite warm and the indoor AC was a life saver, if you weren’t sitting on the front porch with a breeze. The most amazing surprise that was recently added was a large screened porch connected to bbq deck. It had a high table and chairs, lights, and a ceiling fan over, wait for it, a large hanging bed suspended to the ceiling!! I spent much time resting or reading there and when there was a thunderstorm the rain was very soothing.
The large front lawn is completely fenced in. To the left is a field and hill where you can see donkeys grazing, emus, and chickens and roosters, who were quite amusing. Once on top of the driveway we saw the cows coming home!
Columbia was a perfect location for many sightseeing options close by, from Amish life, an historic train ride, part of the Mason-Dixon line, the Susquehanna River, and my favorite the Susanna Wright house where she hosted some of the day’s most famous thinkers, including Benjamin Franklin. The house is one of the most historically accurate buildings from that time.
Pete and Carol were very cool and interesting to talk with and learn some history about the cottage and surrounding country. We felt like friends by the time we left. But they also gave you all the privacy you needed. Thank you Carol and Pete and Bella for sharing your home and farm with us! Next Lancaster trip we know where we will be staying.

We stayed a week in this cottage and absolutely loved it! Carol and Pete were warm and welcoming even before we arrived by answering all our questions and offering to help set up any activities we were interested in doing. When we arrived Carol brought us warm blueberry muffins and farm fresh eggs so we didn't have to worry about breakfast the next morning. The kitchen has every appliance you could need to make a delicious meal - just bring your creativity. The screened-in back porch had a hanging bed that was so inviting and comfortable that I snuck in a nap or two! The upstairs bathroom was spacious, very clean and all the elegant touches gave it a spa-like feel. I recommend going to the Lancaster Market to pick up your fresh vegetable, fruits, meats and cheeses - what a delight to walk through the market. If you love cheese we found an awesome restaurant in West Reading called 'Say Cheese' - yummy! We truly loved out time here and would recommend this place to anyone wanting a relaxing time in a first class home.
This is just perfect for us and our little dog.
The kitchen is fantastic!
The Central Market is open on Tuesday and Friday and has everything you could possibly want to cook.Loved it.
Pete and Carol are some of the nicest folks that we've ever met.
