About The Owner

I am primarily a stay at home mum to two young children, which keeps me pretty busy.

Why The Owner chose Grachtengordel

My husband lived in Holland as a child and worked in Amsterdam during his early career. We spent many a weekend as a exploring this beautiful and historic city and fell in love with its laid back culture, great food and getting about everywhere on a bike! There is so much to explore, museums and galleries to visit theres always something else to see. Now we have been enjoying introducing our children to Dutch culture, and they have loved riding about in the

Great location and staying in a houseboat was a great experience

  • 4 of 5

Would definitely recommend the stay on the houseboat. Great location and boat was very spacious with a great bathroom. The house boat was clean and walking distance to all the attractions in downtown Amsterdam.

Room for improvement

  • 3 of 5

Overall we enjoyed our stay on the house boat in Amsterdam, however there were a number of areas for improvement for this listing.

The boat is small but suited our needs for 5 young adults (although we found the home to be very dusty).

A number of appliances were broken, including several lights, the oven and range hood.

Communication during our stay was also somewhat unreliable.

There is a large metal grate at the front door that acts as a bridge from the street to the boat. This grate was incredibly slippery and dangerous, and we had several incidents of slipping (almost into the water) while trying to go in and out of the boat. We were a group of friends in our early 20’s and it was a huge hazard for us due to the wet/snowy weather during our stay. I could not imagine how challenging this would be for older/less mobile people or young children.

Despite the above comments, the house boat is very well located on one of the canals and we had a great time exploring Amsterdam.

Superb location but has some problems.

  • 2 of 5

I wanted to give this property a 5 star rating but simply cannot. Despite the fantastic location and nice amenities, this property has a mold problem from a recent plumbing backup. The space under the floor (storge area and where the laundry is) is covered in mold. We needed to have all windows open at all times to keep good ventilation, which was possible since it was warm out but would have been troublesome in colder weather. If you are sensitive to mold this will be a serious issue.

Additionally, one of the bikes was non-functional (e-bike, despite being charged overnight). We had to go rent an additional bike for our stay.

The houseboat is nicely stocked with kitchen items. Check in was smooth. The futon in the main living area really should be updated. If you can overlook any of these things you will enjoy your stay in this small but charming houseboat on a fantastic street.

Owner's Response: Sincere apologies to Lilian. This problem has been resolved, unfortunately there was a plumbing leak in the boat's undercroft. As caused by the prior guest (see the 1 star review), who was messing around down there, though there is no access for guests below floor please. It's a utility area for the maintenance of the boat. As soon as it was discovered it was repaired, and unfortunately Lilian stayed during the few days it took to dry it out and repair. Again apologies re this unfortunate event
