Overview

About the property

Traditional stone-built 18th Lake District country house.

Please note that we only rent out Charcoal House for the following options:-

1. Full week from a Monday or Friday.

3. 3 night weekend of Friday to Monday.

4. 4 night mid-week break of Monday to Friday.

The only exceptions to this are Christmas and New Year week.

Charcoal House is a gorgeous and unique large country house with a south facing sunny cottage garden.

The house is located in a peaceful off-road location in the tiny hamlet of Low Nibthwaite just ½ a mile from the southern shores of Coniston Water.

The house has off road parking for 4 cars.

FOR BOOKINGS IN 2018

The house sleeps 6 people in 3 bedrooms with 2 bathrooms.

For an extra charge of £50 per night, guests can also have access to ‘The Nook’, a self-contained ground floor apartment that occupies half of the ground floor of the house and is accessed via a door in the main kitchen.

The Nook sleeps 2 people and is only rented to guests renting Charcoal House. Please scroll down the page to ‘The Nook’ for further details.

FOR BOOKINGS IN 2019

The house will sleep 8 people in 4 bedrooms with 3 bathrooms and 2 kitchens as The Nook will be included in the price.

KITCHEN

The large country style kitchen is fully equipped with everything you will need for luxurious, modern living and entertaining including a microwave, dishwasher, large fridge freezer, crockery, glasses, cutlery, kitchen equipment & utensils for 8 people.

The twin oven Aga range cooker is left on constantly throughout the year providing lovely ambient warmth and the unbeatable taste of Aga cooking.

The open plan kitchen has a breakfast bar, large dining table and 8 chairs and just off the kitchen is the ‘Snug’ seating area with a sofa and coffee table. This is a great area for the kids to get away on their own whilst the rest of the group relax at the other end of the house in the large sitting room.

The house has 3 bathrooms, 2 in the main house and a further en-suite in The Nook (for an additional charge-see below).

Upstairs you’ll find 3 bedrooms all located off a lovely large landing with a huge skylight that fills the house with natural light.

At the far end of the landing you’ll find the large sitting room. This room is exceptionally spacious and has a huge ‘wow factor’. There’s sofas and chairs for 8 people, a top of the range Samsung Smart TV, a roaring log fire and a large balcony overlooking the River Crake and the Lake District fells.

The balcony is a wonderful place to relax and look out across the river and fells to ‘The Old Man of Coniston’, England’s highest most southerly mountain.

BEDROOMS & BATHROOMS

The 3 large bedrooms are luxuriously furnished with new beds, mattresses and quality wood furniture.

2 bedrooms have king sized beds and the largest bedroom has a super king sized bed that can be unzipped to make twin beds (please let us know at the time of booking if this is your requirement).

The house has 2 good sized bathrooms, 1 with a large walk-in shower and the 2nd bathroom has a roll top, claw foot, free standing bath.

Luxury Egyptian cotton bed linen and towels are included in the price along with central heating, electric, hot water and free Wi-Fi.

UTILITY ROOM

The utility room just off the kitchen houses the washing machine, tumble drier, large fridge freezer and an additional sink. This is also a great boot room and drying room.

The Nook is located through a door at the other end of the utility room which is locked if the Nook is not rented by yourselves. The Nook is not rented separately and your privacy is never compromised.

THE GARDEN

The large, south facing cottage garden has a summer house, BBQ and table and chairs for 8 people. The peaceful, secluded garden is a wonderful place to dine ‘al fresco’ or just enjoy the peace and quiet of the English Lake District with the gentle sound of the River Crake in the valley below.

GARAGE

Guests are welcome to make use of the large, secure garage to store bicycles, canoes and other outdoors equipment.

PETS

Well behaved dogs are welcome for a charge of £20 for 1 dog or £30 for 2 dogs. Sorry, but we do not allow more than 2 dogs.

Non pet owners can rest assured that we spend this extra money on additional cleaning so that non pet owners wouldn’t know a dog has stayed in Charcoal House.

This is a great area for dogs with plenty of walks from the doorstep. Charcoal House is surrounded by mountains, fells, fields, footpaths, woods and riverside walks where your dog can have a great holiday too.

The large enclosed garden has just had new fencing put up so you can all enjoy the garden together.

THE NOOK

The Nook is a large, spacious, ground floor, self-contained apartment and is only rented out to guests renting Charcoal House.

There is an additional charge of £50 per night if you want to rent the Nook expanding the occupancy to 8 people.

The open plan Nook is furnished to the same high, luxury standard as the rest of the house with a king sized bed, a seating area with a sofa, chair, table, flat screen TV and a log fire.

The Nook also has an open plan, fully equipped kitchen and the en-suite bathroom has a power shower, toilet and basin.

French doors open out to the garden and driveway.

Luxury Egyptian cotton bed linen and towels are included in the price along with central heating, electric, hot water and free Wi-Fi.

The Nook is not rented out separately. It can only be rented in conjunction with the rest of Charcoal House.

If you would like to make use of The Nook you just need to add this to your booking by contacting us before you book.

Notes:
The house is located in a very peaceful area on the eastern side of Coniston Water. This side of the lake has the best views across Coniston Water to the Coniston Fells. The Coniston mountains are dominated by Wetherlam and The Old Man of Coniston, the highest most southerly mountain in England at 2634 feet. Quiet, charming lanes, paths, bridges and bridleways give great access to explore the stunning local area on foot or bike from the cottage front door. Charcoal House is 10 minutes’ walk to Allan Tarn, which is the peaceful tarn at the end of Coniston Water and was featured in Arthur Ransome’s book Swallows and Amazons as ‘Octopus Lagoon’. CONISTON WATER Coniston Water is one of the most imposing and beautiful English lakes and is situated to the west of Lake Windermere. This quiet lake is ideal for dinghy sailing, canoeing, kayaking or a leisure cruise on the beautiful steam yacht ‘Gondola’. More details can be found on our own web site.

Fantastic Cottage

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely cottage! We enjoyed many mornings with coffee and reading in the snug room off of the kitchen. The decor in the entire cottage is so nice and all of the bedrooms are so nicely done up and comfortable. We came and went a lot and the central location was great, with access to all that the Lake District has to offer. The aga kept us warm on cold mornings and with some rain, and open windows brought in fresh country air. An unfortunate plumbing incident was handled quickly and with good humor, which we greatly appreciated.

We had a great family holiday at this lovely cottage, in a great location which was made even better with the fantastic weather we had. We made use of the lovely garden in the evening. Hopefully we can return soon.

Stunning cottage in a beautiful part of the world

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Charcoal House for our 25th wedding anniversary with our two boys and their girlfriends. What a beautiful cottage with everything that you will ever need and more. You feel very at home as soon as you arrive. The kitchen and lounge were great for us all to catch up. The owner Simon was excellent help. Can definitely recommend Charcoal House for a family get together. We were very sad to leave as the long weekend was certainly not long enough at this cottage. Thanks again Simon we will hopefully be returning again soon. Jennifer & Tony Meadows

Beautifully kept house with everything you need

  • 4 of 5

We stayed with our grown up children and two dogs during the Easter week holiday, with a view to doing some walking in the Lakes. The house did not disappoint. Communications were always quick and clear. The details of the house were accurate. The bedrooms were fab, extremely spacious and lovely comfortable beds with lovely bed linen. Plenty of towels. The house was warm and welcoming. The aga took a bit of getting used to, but, once mastered, did the job! The shower was always bursting with hot water, and served 6 of us well every morning. A lovely sociable house, stunning lounge with great views. Walking in abundance too. I would recommend this house anytime, I bet in the summer it is even better as you would get to use the balcony and the garden.

Fantatsic few days in the lakes

  • 5 of 5

Charcoal house was a fantastic base for our break in the lakes, even better than the photographs. The house is filled with quality furnishing and finishes, with everything you can think of at hand. The walk into the woods with the dog was a definite highlight. We would thoroughly recommend the house, all details and information provided were spot on.
