About The Owner

Mario has lived in Verona and the Valpolicella area of Italy all his life, while Anne moved to Italy from Oxford and has lived in Negrar for the last 20 years.

Mario loves photography and walking in the vineyards and olive groves behind our house, or further afield in the Verona hills, Monte Baldo and the Dolomite mountains. He is an expert guide to the footpaths in the area and is always happy to share his knowledge with our guests.

Anne loves swimming in Lake Garda and also in the thermal baths at Aquardens and local swimming pools.

We also enjoy the opera at the Arena in Verona in the summer, evenings out for dinner by Lake Garda , or in the Lessinia hills.

Whenever we can we love to take the train to Venice, where Anne worked for 10 years teaching English at Ca' Foscari University.

We also enjoy accompanying our guests on wine tasting excursions to some of the wineries in our area. Mario prefers Valpolicella Classico, Amarone and Recioto from our area, while Anne prefers the white wines from the south part of Lake Garda, Lugana and Custoza.

The Owner purchased this apartment in 1995

Why The Owner chose Negrar

Our apartment was Mario's family home until we moved round the corner where we run Parry Bed and Breakfast. We love the peace and quiet of the area which is extremely convenient - 10 minutes walk to the centre of Negrar with its bars and restaurants and just 2 minutes to the nearest supermarket, but also 2 minutes from the vineyards and the start of some beautiful walks up to the cross on the hill above Negrar.

What makes this apartment unique

Mario is a wonderful guide to the area and is always willing to share his local knowledge and maps with our guests. This is a wonderful area with very few tourists, the Valpolicella hills are among the most beautiful in Italy.

Perfect apartment in beautiful environment

  • 5 of 5

It was lovely to stay in Negrar, the apartment met our needs perfectly and we can recommend others to book here. Easy getting around in Valpolicella, and being near to Verona, Venedig and Garda made our holiday just as we wanted. Thank you, Anne and Mario!

We also enjoy accompanying our guests on wine tasting excursions to some of the wineries in our area. Mario prefers Valpolicella Classico, Amarone and Recioto from our area, while Anne prefers the white wines from the south part of Lake Garda, Lugana and Custoza.

We are ideally placed as a base for visits to Verona, Lake Garda, Monte Baldo and the Lessinia mountains as well as other towns such as Vicenza, Padova and Venice to the east, Trento and Bolzano to the north, Sirmione, Desenzano and Brescia to the west, and Mantova, Modena and Bologna to the south.

Valpolicella: Ponte di Veia

Ponte di Veia is an astonishing natural bridge just 15 minutes up the hill from Negrar. The whole area is part of a natural park with a friendly restaurant and fine walks in the surrounding hills. Part of the area has been developed as an open air museum to show how people lived here in prehistoric times, and at weekends the area is a favourite for climbers who entertain the other visitors with their daring exploits.

Valpolicella: Molina Waterfalls

Molina is a medieval village at the junction between three valleys in steep wooded mountainside about half an hour from Negrar. The village itself is charming. The old houses reflect the style of the western Lessinia, and its botanical museum in the main square has a fine exhibition of local flora.

But the main attraction is the walk down to the park for breathtaking views of the walls of nude rock and the roaring waterfalls. For the bravest we recommend a play on the swing which takes you right up to the waterfalls. We recommend good walking shoes - it can be slippery and when you get down to the last waterfall, it's quite a long walk back up again. There is a bar at the beginning of the walk so anyone who prefers to can stay there and wait for the others to return.

And to finish off the day why not have a look at some local produce in the little shop and try the friendly and reasonably priced restaurant in the main square!

Valpolicella: Prun marble quarries

The site of the ancient Verona Red marble and stone quarries can be visited in Prun, a small village just 10 minutes above Negrar.

Marble quarrying has always been at the basis of the local economy and local stone was used back in Roman times to build the Arena amphitheatre as well as the basilicas of San Zeno and Santa Anastasia and many other important buildings in the centre of Verona.

Recently the whole area has been studied by architects from all over the world who took part in a competition for the best plans to ensure the development of the whole area as a local beauty spot.

A day out: Spa near Negrar

Aquardens

We highly recommend a day out in this spa with its thermal baths. Ask us for discounts. The park is open all day from 10.00 until late, and as the water is warm, it doesn't matter if the weather isn't great. .

If you're thinking of going, we can explain the best way to get there. The website www.aquardens.it gives you more information about the pools. The spa is well kept, clean and quiet.

Closed on Tuesdays

Discounts available for our guests.

Lake Garda

Lake Garda is wonderful with so many places to see - Lazise, Bardolino, Garda and Torri del Benaco are the nearest. Malcesine with its cable-car and charming side streets and port is perhaps our favourite, then north to Torbole (best wind for windsurfing) and Riva del Garda.

To the south, don't miss Sirmione with its Roman villa (Grotto di Catullo) at the end of the peninsula. For a great day out, take the ferry from Torri del Benaco to Maderno, or from Malcesine to Limone. The best place for swimming is Punta San Vigilio - park at the top of the hill between Garda and Torri.

Restaurants:

There are many excellent restaurants and pizzerias in the Negrar area and in the Valpolicella hills, but the ones we have selected are special to us.

Pizzeria/Ristorante Alle Vigne in San Peretto, 20 minutes' walk through the vineyards, or 5 mins by car. We recommend this as the best value for money in Negrar. The food is excellent and prices reasonable. Booking usually not necessary (or possible) – you may have to wait a while at weekends, but it's worth the wait – ask for a 'prosecco from the bar in the meantime. Closed on Tuesdays.

Ristorante Valpolicella in Torbe di Negrar, 4 km up the hill from Negrar, is a large restaurant with a terrace overlooking the valley of Negrar . When it's not crowded, it's delightful and the self service vegetable and salad table is a major attraction. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

Ristorante al Tesoro in Corrubbio, 9 km up the hill from Negrar. A reasonably priced family run restaurant with some interesting dishes. We like to walk there ( 3 km uphill) from Ponte di Veia on a warm summer evening for dinner, then walk back down as the sun sets to have coffee in the restaurant at Ponte di Veia. For those with less energy it's worth driving the extra 3 km after visiting Europe 's largest natural bridge and surrounding pa
