Lovely Holiday Home with wonderful sea views in peaceful, sheltered location

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Our spacious well equipped holiday home is in a peaceful sheltered setting with large enclosed garden and fantastic sea views over to Little Bernera and the Atlantic. There are 2 large double bedrooms, 1 twin bedroom and a double bed settee in the downstairs lounge if sleeping 8. The second sizeable lounge upstairs has a large corner sofa and patio windows which open onto a Juliet balcony taking full advantage of the views – a great place to chill with a large glass of wine.

The road by the house ends 200 yards further down on a rocky beach – there is no passing traffic, just the odd explorer, so very peaceful. Bosta Beach and the Iron Age House are only two miles away – a very pleasant walk – there are also many other stunning beaches within easy drive. Golden Eagles nest locally and are frequently seen – the area is perfect for nature lovers, ramblers and cyclists alike to explore. Water sports such as surfing and kayaking are also popular actives. Local boat trips are available to the islands or you can visit the nearby Callanish Standing Stones, the Black House village at Gearrannan or travel slightly further afield to the lighthouse at the Butt of Lewis with it's spectacular coastal scenery.

The nearby village of Breacleit has a small shop and petrol station and there is also a community centre with cafe and internet services. The main town of Lewis is Stornoway which is a distance of 25 miles (40 minutes drive) and has two large supermarkets to choose from both of which do home deliveries.

There are two bathrooms – the downstairs one includes an overhead shower but the ceiling height is a bit low (old part of the house!) so if you’re over 5’8” you might need to crouch a bit to use it! Our well equipped kitchen includes dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, full height fridge freezer and tumble drier (which is in the porch). There is a separate dining room off the open plan kitchen and lounge and a porch for leaving outside clothes, boots etc. As well as the oil-fired central heating there is a wood burning stove downstairs for cosy evenings in.

There are televisions in both lounges as well as the master bedroom so the kids can watch their favourite channels without interrupting yours! We’ve supplied a DVD/CD player along with a selection of videos and CDs as well as a docking station for use with your own mp3 player. Books and games in situ too. Mobile signal is a bit erratic but there is a working telephone box opposite the house just in case all else fails (which hasn’t happened yet). Satellite broadband has been installed for your convenience.

A cot, high chair and stair gate are available on request. We don’t allow smoking in the house.

Perfect house, ideal weather!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to Lewis and Glen Cottage proved to be a perfect base for our week of exploration. The house has everything that you need for a very comfortable stay while the view from the upstairs lounge is simply ‘to die for’. There were only the two of us so space was clearly no issue. We chose to use the large bedroom downstairs which had an excellent bed and, given the supberb weather, remained comfortably cool overnight for sleeping. As expected given the location, the water pressure for the shower was not the most powerful but still functioned well enough. We thouroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend Glen Cottage.

Escape from the crowds

  • 5 of 5

We visited the Isle of Lewis for my birthday and our wedding anniversary and had the most amazing time! Evelyn was an incredible host treating us to a lovely welcome pack in lieu of our double celebration. We experienced excellent communication throughout, nothing was a problem building up to our stay and on arrival. We spoke briefly on the phone the day we set off and she was a joy to chat to; warm and friendly. The house itself, although fairly large, feels very cosy with a wood burning fire downstairs next to the kitchen and central heating throughout. There is plenty of wood for you to use in the shed located alongside the house which was a relief as we forgot to buy some en route and were pleased we hadn't when we arrived and saw the mountains of wood ready to use! As there were only two of us we only made use of the master bedroom, so I can only speak for that particular room when I say the bed was gorgeously comfortable and everything lovely and clean. There is a good stock of music, games and outdoor essentials for walkers and those wanting to try their hand at fishing. The area is very isolated and quiet, despite having three neighbours. There is a pebbled beach at the end of the road you can walk to, but I would recommend either driving the 10 min drive or walking the 45 min path to Bosta Beach - truly our personal favourite on the island. The road to the house (and around the island generally) is narrow and winding so I'd recommend packing ginger beer and travel sickness tablets if you struggle with car sickness as I do...We hope to be back again soon, next time with friends!

Beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

We spent Christmas and New year here and a birthday, even the weather looked after us, Two Adults and five children, can not fault this property, it is the best time we have ever had, so much so we aim to move to the Isle of Lewis. It was the most lovely warm welcome when we walked in, Christmas Tree and decorations all put up for us, a lovely fire ready to light, a very well looked after clean and homely house, with everything and more than you could ever need, beautiful sea views, and clear starry nights, we all had tears in our eyes leaving, Thank you so much, I would return tomorrow, Wayne, Toni and kids :-)

lovely house, well equipped in a quiet location (you need to want to be remote!).

  • 4 of 5

It terms of interesting things to do, mostly you will need to drive. More local is the local beach at Bosta (which is a walk). We fished from the point opposite the house (successfully) and bought lobster, live from the boat at Kirkibost pier. All great!

Our only disappointment was the inability to walk freely across fields from the house (other than in one direction on land owned by the house). All the surrounding land is fenced with barbed wire and it is impossible to walk freely.... and clearly people don't want you doing this!

That all said the house is very nice, clean and well appointed. Good views from that large windows in the upstairs lounge.

All in all we have a very nice week.
