Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Smiths - High Terraces

Classic Bermuda Home with ocean views, nicely updated kitchen, 2 Bedroom, 1 bath

4 day minimum stay.

Queen size bed in Master bedroom. Wake up looking out at views of Harrington Sound! Second Bedroom has 2 twin beds, garden views.

Combination living and room with slider to front terrace with views of the ocean. Kitchen was totally remodeled 2014, all new stainless appliances, dish washer, gas stove, microwave, fridge. Washer and dryer in basement. Step out to private grounds of 1/2 acre.

Relax under large shade Poinciana Tree.

Barbecue and dine on terrace off living room watching the sun set in the west. In the morning eat breakfast watching the sun rise in the east. All the while there is the view of Harrington Sound and Atlantic Ocean beyond!! Must love the colorful small geckos, great house companions and insect eaters! We aren't on the water, we are atop one of the highest hills, hence the beautiful views. The beaches are a bus ride away. Bermuda is 21 miles long, 1 mile at its widest, so the ocean is never far away. This is a 65 year old house that though it has been lovingly restored, has it's imperfections, some will love and some need to have more of a hotel experience!

Please note, on rare occasion we accept a pet on a limited basis. If you have allergies to pets, please find other accommodations.

About Marion and Gary Tilton

Our family has lived on the island for 235 years! I am a Bermudian who was raised in this exceptional home. My father who was a jeweler on the island, was raised in the 300 year old house next door which is now owned by my brother! My father was given this piece of his Dad's farmland with lovely views when he was ready to be married to my Mom. My Mom met my Dad when she and her sister came to Bermuda on a flying boat in 1948 from their home in Philadelphia. My Mom and Dad built this house you will be visiting, and we hope you love it as much as we do. I have always had one foot in Bermuda and one in the US. I moved to the US in 1980 to become a flight attendant for Delta Air Lines. A perfect profession for an islander privileged to have dual citizenship! I married a lovely New Hampshireite, Gary, in 1987. We have 2 children who have always loved Bermuda and have their status in Bermuda, having spent much time here.

Marion and Gary Tilton purchased this house in 1951

Why Marion and Gary Tilton chose Bermuda

This much revered piece of property has been in our family for several generations. I say revered because it is on the second highest hill on the island with wonderful views. It is far enough away from the main roads that you hardly hear a vehicle! Bermuda is a gem of an island, then you get to High Terraces, and you feel like you are on your own, very private. Like you are the Crown Jewel in a very special spot. You have to understand though, our house is on the reasonable side of pricing for a reason! It is lovely, but it isn't a hotel!! In the summer every scrap of food must be put away quickly, as ants will find it wherever it is! If you have allergies it might not be the right place. We have heat and air conditioning to dry the atmosphere, but we've have a guest say it was musty at first! Welcome to our island!

What makes this house unique

Spectacular location for walkers, hikers. Getting away from it all, and for those who want to show their family what it is like to be a real Bermudian! The house is filled with good feelings and wonderful memories for me. I grew up here with five cousins next door, and other friends and family nearby. We walked down the hill almost every day in the summer to Harrington Sound. The odd day we didn't go there we were in our boat, or at one of the fabulous South Shore Beaches. We had forts on the properties, hand raised crows for pets when our parents wouldn't spring for a horse or a dog!!

Panoramic view of Harrington Sound from a very quiet and private terrace!

This lovely house is located at the end of a very quiet lane. We enjoyed breakfast on the back terrace most mornings as we relaxed in the sunshine and took in the spectacular view. Great place to get away from the hustle and bustle yet still enjoy the beauty of Bermuda.

FANTASTIC

  • 5 of 5

I have been going to Bermuda every year for the last 14 years and have stayed in many different houses/apartments. This year was by far the best house we have stayed in. The location is great, house was clean and well equipt with everything I needed. The owners answered all my questions in a timely fashion. I highly recommend this house .

Thank you Marion !

  • 5 of 5

My two children, both in their mid-20s, and I stayed at High Terraces from Oct. 6-10, 2016. We lived on the island for five years in the 1990s; it was our first time back to take a walk down memory lane.

We were all extremely impressed with High Terraces ! It was in a beautiful location on the top of a hill with gorgeous views of Harrington Sound. The house was very spacious; each room was a good size. The house was very clean; the kitchen was very well equipped. There were plenty of sheets and towels for us to use. It had all of the amenities to ensure a great stay.

We were fortunate to meet Marion as she happened to be staying on the island not far away. Marion was extremely hospitable; she sincerely wanted to make sure we had the best stay possible. You certainly did, Marion … thanks very much !

If you haven’t been to Bermuda, you must go. It is truly the treasure of the Atlantic. The scenery, the beaches, the friendly people … there is no place like it. And I would recommend that you stay at High Terraces … you will not be disappointed !

Thanks again, Marion, for allowing us to stay at your childhood home. It is a holiday the three of us will never forget.

Tranquil location with spectacular views

  • 5 of 5

Much has been said already about the property in past reviews: the tranquil location; spectacular views onto Harrington Sound; central location that is within 30 minutes to either end of the island; comfortable and bright rooms with air-conditioning; well equipped new kitchen (including sharp knives that made prep work a breeze!). The house itself exceeded our expectations. The place has the feel of a home which it has been to the owner's family for a couple of generations.

Marion is a very attentive and generous host, she truly made us feel like we were her guests sharing her home. Our trip was nearly jeopardized by a potential hurricane which was to hit Bermuda a couple of days prior to our arrival. Marion was quick to communicate with us, tracking the storm, and showed great flexibility in the event that the storm nixed our holiday plans. Luckily for us the storm passed and we could enjoy the property as planned.

During our stay we made good use of bikes (mopeds) to get us around. However, one could do without to enjoy a local beach, about 30 minutes walk , or a swim off a dock in half that time. A nearby small market, 10 minutes walk, has everything one may need, including fresh catch of the day (local tuna during our stay).

We took leisurely morning coffees on the terrace overlooking the Sound, spent the afternoons exploring beaches and in the evenings relaxed over a mojito listening to tree frogs.

Given the opportunity we'd do it all over again!

Owner's Response: Oh thank you for your wonderful comments about your stay at High Terraces. We're so happy you enjoed it, and you revisited so much of Bermuda! It was lovely to meet you both! In case future guests worry that I'll be hovering, I happened to be on the island for a family event. I wish I could meet every guest. My sister is always on hand if needs be. These guests stayed a week, an ideal time, it gave them time to enjoy the views and feeling of our house morning and evening, and still time to get around the island at a leisurely pace. Rejuvenation and relaxation! Hope you're ready for the cold winter now after your sunny stay! One day I will visit you, both so special!

Stunning view secluded Bermudian charm

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Marion & Gary's beautiful traditional home. A real gem of a property. The view from the terrace overlooking Harrington Sound was fantastic. To watch the sunset to the sound of tree frogs and the sunrise to the sound of kiskadees was very special. High Terraces is a quiet, peaceful and secluded property but very convenient for catching the bus and a short walk down the hill to a supermarket. Marion & Gary were such kind, helpful and accommodating hosts and we would highly recommend their lovely home. Thank you both so much.

Feels Like Home

  • 4 of 5

My grandmothers home is on the west side of the Island in Somerset. Unfortunately this summer I was not able to stay there. So I went on vrbo to try and find a guest house on the island. I wanted to be closer to the west end but when I saw the beautiful view of Harrington Sound it reminded me of the view of the Great Sound from my family home. The more I looked into the pictures and read the reviews I was ready to book.

Typically when I bring my wife and children to the island we stay closer to Sandy's on our days out. It was great to be closer to the east end this summer. From High Terrace, St.George's and Hamilton are close, and traveling there is easy on the bus, taxi or scooter. The public transport to areas of the island via ferry or bus is good, but you are subject to there time schedule. I have always preferred the scooter. It makes things easier for me. The home is very close to the Bermuda Aquarium. Awesome. You'll enjoy.

We spent a lot of time in the water and we always enjoy the beautiful beaches. Returning to High Terrace in the evening was always a delight. The kitchen was well equipped, and the appliances where top of the line. We made some beautiful meals and enjoyed the views and breeze as we ate on the patio. There is a good grocery at the bottom of the hill. It has everything you need. The living space was comfortable and cozy when it was time to wind down. We had plenty of fresh towels and linens, and having access to a washer and dryer was a plus. The beds where very comfortable, but some better pillows would have been nice. Also, each bedroom has a mini ductless split that cooled us right off. Big plus!

High Terrace is a beautiful "old bermuda" home. The owners are doing a great job bringing this home into current standards while still maintaining the "old bermuda" charm. I appreciate what they have done and what they are doing to preserve this piece of history. You will feel sad the day you leave because you connect with the home and the island on so many levels and this home feels like your own family home.

Thank you for your hospitality and grace. It was a pleasure sharing your home.
