About Michelle Kriss

I'm a retired naval officer and licensed engineer with a passion for taking something ugly and making it beautiful. The pic above shows my husband and me before a Tough Mudder. Sums us up, 'go big or go home.'

Michelle Kriss purchased this house in 2014

Why Michelle Kriss chose Kansas

Blame it on HGTV Rehab Addict - I became interested in older homes. After toying with the idea for a while and looking at many homes, I found this one. From the pictures it looked like it had awesome potential. Touring it, I found those treasures I was looking for, original, unpainted moldings, pocket doors, french doors, stamped plaster, hardwood floors. Where others saw filth and smelled pets, I saw potential. My husband, daughter and I spent four months making this something we are proud of and would live in ourselves.

What makes this house unique

Main floor boasts brand new kitchen, spacious dining room, living room and foyer. Perfect for a big family get together or small reception. Within walking distance of Emporia Main Street events, shops, restaurants and Emporia State University. Folding tables and chairs for gatherings available upon request

Guestbook comments from the owner

Will and Adeline Wayman were our great-grandparents. Their daughter, Pearl, was our grandmother. She was married in the Wayman house in 1915. We have a picture of her wedding day standing on the front staircase. We always wondered where this picture was taken. When we discovered this home was to be used as a "hotel" we saw the pictures on line and there was grandma Pearl's staircase! We were so excited.

The owners graciously gave us a tour of the home, where Will's grandsons (one of them our father) came to play as a young boys. Our dad told us that he remembers Will sitting on the front porch after a hard days work.

Walking through the halls of this home we could feel the spirit of our great-grandparents, our grandmother and our father. We could imagine them in the living room by the fire, the parlor visiting with friends and we wondered which of the cold bedrooms upstairs was grandmas.

It was fun to imagine our dad and his brothers (Will's grandsons) running a short two blocks from their house at 705 Union St to see their grandparents.

Our brother, Stephen William F, who passed in 19864 was named after Will Wayman.

Thank you so much for saving the Wayman home! It means more than you will ever know.

Perfect home for big families

  • 5 of 5

My entire family(15 occupants) shared the Wayman House. Even though our party was large, we did not feel crowded at any given time during our stay. The home had more than enough space for the kids to play and run around. The kitchen was fuly equipped with everything we needed. The bathrooms and bedrooms wore spacious and nicely decorated. The attic was contantly praised, especially by my teenage sister who fell in love with it. The owner check was really attentive and available when we needed her. She was kind enough to send my mail a forgotten bag. Overall, we enjoyed our stay.

Wedding Entourage

  • 5 of 5

My 13 friends and I came and stayed at the Wayman house in the middle of June for a wedding and our stay was Superb! This house really does have beautiful history as evidenced by the photos of how the house looked before the remodeling. It is exceptionally clean, spacious, and accommodating for any size group. It was a wonderful experience all around.

The only caveat is that the Attic can be very warm during the summer so make sure to use the window AC units if people plan to sleep up there. However the AC units did the trick and it was very comfortable at night.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay! Yes, those attic A/C's have to run for a few hours to cool it down. We look forward to having you back.

Wayman House is fabulous!

  • 5 of 5

We had a large group and everyone was very happy. The bedrooms were very large, 3 of which have ceiling fans and tv's. Very nice, well equipped kitchen with an open dining room accommodated us for breakfast and lunch. Every room is well decorated, super clean and comfy. Really feels like your at home and I can't imagine there would be a nicer home anywhere for the price. The keypad really makes it easy for everyone come and go and there's at least room for three vehicles in the rear parking spaces. The hosts were wonderful to work with and made everything very easy!

Beautiful home...but not a restful place due to loud train

  • 2 of 5

We were delighted with home...all was clean, aesthetically appealing, and lovely. Only issue we found was that there were trains that passed by every 15 mins all night long, honking their horn and unfortunately our entire party were not able to sleep at all. I communicated this issue to the owner and she said she'd add the fact that there's a train in the area, and that she has earplugs available, to the vrbo description. That way an informed decision can be made.

Owner's Response: It should be noted that my property has 37 reviews, all 4 or 5 stars save this one. This house is EIGHT blocks from the train track, not right next to them as the review implies. I have slept at the house on several occasions, as have a multitude of other tenants, and not been bothered by the trains. The house has brand new storm windows that dampen the sound. As for the earplugs, those were provided per the request of the 1 other tenant who was bothered by the trains, NOT because I feel that it is so loud they are needed. This is the Midwest, we have freight trains. When I lived in Oklahoma, the tracks were about as close to my house as this one is. My 94 year old Grandma told me she opened the windows so she could hear the trains better when she was sleeping. I guess it's perspective. There is not any place she could have stayed in Emporia where the trains would not have been heard.

Amazing House, perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

Myself and 11 other people shared this beautiful home. The Wayman House provided us with everything we needed and then some! First off, the house was clean, the beds were comfortable, and everything a person could need for their stay is provided. Michelle only asks that if you use the products in the house to please contribute to what was used. The orange couch sucks you in and provided plenty of room for a movie night. Michelle even has blankets stored behind the couch to cuddle up in! The Harry Potter room is a good size and the attic has storage areas for anyone sleeping up there, as well as it's own AC unit. The location of the house is with in walking distance to Commercial Street which is the main strip in town. No need to go far at all! In all, we could not have asked for a better place to stay and we plan on returning. This environment had us all feeling like we were at home.
