About the property

The Craftsman Cottage at Lichen Estate in the heart of Anderson Valley

Our Craftsman Cottage sits at the heart of Anderson Valley — 100 feet from the Lichen Estate winery, 500 feet from the Vineyard, and three miles from Boonville and Philo. The property offers a mix of vacation easy fun, with a generous porch surrounded by ample lawns, picnic tables, shade-trees, swings, and hammocks. True wilderness beckons hikers just over the backyard fence. Five minutes by car lands you at Hendy Woods and the most popular swimming hole on the Navarro River. Thirty minutes delivers the mouth of the Navarro and the Pacific Ocean. Fifty minutes to the historic towns of Elk and Mendocino. An hour's drive rewards you with Fort Bragg and Glass Beach, the Skunk Train, and the Noyo Harbor.

About The Owner

We're the founders and proprietors of Lichen Estate winery and vineyard. Before starting Lichen we founded then sold Breggo Cellars. The Cottage was once our full-time home. We now live in Healdsburg and rent the cottage to guests of the winery and Anderson Valley.

The Owner purchased this farmhouse in 2000

Why The Owner chose North Coast California

Lichen Estate offers 203-acres of Anderson Valley bliss. The property has half a mile of highway frontage, and lies three miles and three highway minutes from both Boonville and Philo. We have upgraded the Craftsman Cottage, built in 1920, with modern amenities and comforts. But just over the back fence lurks a stunning wilderness, with lichen-covered oaks and madrones, watched over by bucks and mountain lions, wild boar and bear, wild turkeys and bald eagles, kites and flycatchers and hummingbirds, tree frogs, bullfrogs, salamanders and snakes.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The one-of-a-kind Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris vineyard is planted meter-by-meter, on the same high-density spacing as the Grand Cru vineyards of Burgundy and Champagne. The winery makes world class Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and sparkling wines. A two acre pond hosts egrets and herons, goldeneyes and mallards, canadian geese and a bevy of polywogs and frogs... plus any swimmer brave enough to wade into the reeds and clay silt. Four unique creeks carve the property's watershed and cross the highway in search of the Navarro River.

Cozy property in a great location

  • 5 of 5

The property is a delight; clean, comfortable and with lots of natural light. Loved the small wood-burning stove in the kitchen area, to relax in front of with a glass of wine from the winery next door. Close to everything, halfway between Boonville and Philo. Must try the winery next door!! Thank you Doug.

Poor communication

  • 2 of 5

The house is fine, although we had to battle an ant problem in the kitchen. It was the hottest weekend on record, so not a big deal. However, I received a message an hour before checking in (Friday afternoon) that there was a cat with her litter of kittens under the house, but that the caretaker would be taking care of them. We arrived to find an emaciated and panting mother cat without food or water. Instead of going next-door to the tasting room to inquire about the caretaker, we went to the store to buy wet/dry cat food, assuming that eventually the caretaker would show up. We love animals, and found her to be incredibly friendly and loving. On Saturday morning, her four kittens wobbled out from under the house to nurse, while we patted her. We were worried about leaving her for the day because of the heat, and water bowls were instantly attacked by some type of hornet and ants. We loaded her up with as much food as possible, and left. We came back mid-afternoon to find her panting again, with the water untouched because it was too warm to drink. I finally went to the tasting room to ask about the caretaker, and the gentleman hadn't heard anything about the cat--and didn't know where "Max" was. Saturday night I left an angry message for Doug, asking if I could bring the cats back with us, and give them to the SPCA. His wife called 10 minutes later, explaining that they wanted to bring the cat back to their home in Healdsburg, and that the caretaker wasn't around because he didn't want to "disturb us." How fortunate that he presumed that we would take care of the cat, or she might have died. Temps were over 110 the entire weekend, and we could have assumed that he was taking care her. You don't burden your guests with that kind of responsibility/anxiety. We finally saw Max early Monday morning with a bag of cat food, but told him not to bother. Before leaving, we put out bowls of cat food and water near the front under a tree, hoping that she would feel comfortable enough to eat and drink there. The cat (whom we named Melanie) had put on some decent weight, and we held her and kissed her goodbye. We left the same way we arrived--anxious and sad.

Perfect Anderson Valley Getaway

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was absolutely fantastic and provided a perfect home base for our Anderson Valley long weekend. Doug was fantastic in getting things set up and had a cold bottle of Pinot Gris waiting for us to welcome us to Lichen Estate. Everything was very comfortable the cottage had everything we needed to make it our little home away from home.

Looks can be deceiving

  • 1 of 5

The 1 star I am giving is solely for the rapid response time from Doug, the owner. Where do I start? Let's say this cottage is rustic. There are many bugs! Spiders everywhere, bugs crawling across our beds and we had an ant invasion. While we were trying to solve the ant problem in the kitchen, we found part of the problem was the dirty stove and the kettle crusted with food and grease. The refrigerator was not very clean and we found condiments that had expired in 2015. Needless to say, we did not cook in the kitchen. The bathtub was inconvenient and had a brown stained shower head. Luckily, we were able to shower at my mother in law's house nearby. The furniture was also "rustic". We sank into the living room couch, and not in a good way. Our bedroom comforter had visible stains upon our arrival. When I brought this to Doug's attention, he did pick it up. He also left some bug spray and ant motels (which the ants completely ignored). However, that was the extent of the problem resolution. Luckily it was warm enough to be able to sleep with just the sheet. The outside of the property was unkempt and not really useable. We paid A LOT of money for this rental! Unfortunately it was a huge disappointment.

Great location in an amazing community!

  • 3 of 5

We very much enjoyed our first visit to Anderson valley. The location of the cottage was fantastic and we liked spending time on the front porch. Our twins loved playing hide and seek upstairs!

Doug was a great host and very quick to respond. However we found ourselves wishing the indoors were a bit less tired and there was a more welcoming outdoor space. The home was tidy overall but the fridge was not very clean.

All of that said we loved the community and had a good time overall. Thank you for having us.

Fantastic Wedding Weekend Stay

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had a fantastic wedding weekend while staying at the Craftsman Cottage at Lichen Estate. The quaint farm house met all of our needs. Jacob, the winery attendant, was informative and friendly. The wines were fantastic. If we ever find our way back up to Anderson Valley again, we will definitely look to stay here again. Thank you to Doug for making this great home available.
