Martha Vaughan the owner was born and raised in Seattle area. In 1995 Martha moved to Bainbridge Island to a historic home built in 1892. This was an old farm called Blakely Hill Farm. Martha raised three wonderful children at Blakely Hill farm. Martha ended up buying the adjoining acreage and Blakely Hill Farm expanded. Martha always had a love of animals of every kind. Martha's children shared this passion and soon Blakely Hill Farm grew onto an animal rescue. First there were dogs and cats, then goats, llamas, a friendly pig and horses. Lots of horses. These were animals thats last possible chance at life was that Martha would take them. Martha was the last "net" to catch/save them in most cases. Martha took neglected, beaten and just thrown out animals from all sorts of unfortunate situations. Martha has now has moved the farm to Port Angeles Wa where she continues to take mostly horses in with her daughter. Martha says rescue animals are a slippery slope but one of the most rewarding slippery slopes. Martha now owns and runs multiple vacation homes and a wedding venue. Martha loves the outdoors. She loves walking the dogs, riding her horses, swimming in Quilcene Bay and enjoying life in general.
Owner purchased this House in 2005
Why Owner chose Quilcene
I purchased this property for so many reasons. I had a huge list of wants when I was shopping for this property. I thought I would never find everything on my list. Thank goodness for my patient realtor! I wanted waterfront property. It has to be saltwater-so I would have a beach and most importantly the water temperature had to warm up for swimming in the summer months. Quilcene Bay was the the right place for my swimming family. Quilcene Bay is such a clean pristine bay. We wanted a place to kayak-this was the right choice again. We kayak all over this bay. The best part is that across from our property is national forest land. There are great coves to explore and no houses. What a rare treat. We wanted waterfront acreage that was secluded. This was a great fit. We wanted a very charming type of house-cabin-hands down this was it. We wanted enough space-bedrooms-bathrooms to have our friends come and stay too. Our list of course included somewhere with a great view, quiet and a big factor was where our rescue dogs could come and run around, swim and not disturb anyone. We needed a quiet setting, country road that we could do our walks on... We found everything we wanted at this property and believe me I shopped for years to find this special place. My family has made years and years of memories at The Quilcene Bay Hideaway. We hope your family and friends can come and make memories at the Quilcene Bay Hideaway too.

Out in the sticks
Good house for kicking back and enjoying the surroundings. Nice (very steep) hike down to the beach but worth it as we had the entire shoreline to ourselves. Floated in the water and swam out to the dock to use the slide. The only downside was the oyster harvesting taking place just north of the property. Loud machinery going from 7 am until 4 pm during the weekdays. Not sure if this happens year round or just at certain times. We didn't let it bother us but it might get tiresome for someone looking for some quiet time.
As for the house itself, rustic feel and plenty of space for multiple people. Yes you can hear the floor squeak but it added to the overall feeling you get of a quaint cabin in the woods. Water pressure tough in the kitchen but dishwasher available if need be. Showers were great and the beds were fine.
Overall a great time and will look to book again when we want to relax and enjoy the area.
We loved the Cabin in the Woods!
Our 3 day stay was wonderful! The kids had a great time. The layout of the house was perfect for the kids and adults to have their own space. The house and property was very well equipped and stocked with whatever we needed, especially lots of towels! The kids loved the hot tub and climbing net! The boys quickly got over their disappointment that the power cord was missing from the game box because there were so many other fun things to do :) The kids are already asking to go back next year!
OOOhhhh...Wonderful!!! The Quilcene Bay Hideaway has been our families favorite getaway for years...I am so glad you could come and bring your family. Hope you can return soon!!
Perfect for our group. Views were fantastic, kayaking was fun. Beds were comfortable and plentiful. Wi fi spotty due to remote location but that’s good for vacation! Floors were creaky but earplugs helped with sleeping. So much to do in area. Would go here again. Bring water shoes for wading in water! Oysters are sharp. Martha was very responsive. Hired Jerry from Belly of the whale to take pictures among the pines, the ferns, and the bay in the background.
So glad you could come to visit!!! We would love to have your group back anytime! Jerry said your family photos were amazing!!
A Hood Canal Paradise!
We spent 4 lovely days at the Hideaway and loved every minute of it! The view from the back deck of the canal was incredible, access to water was amazing, wildlife viewing was supreme! Saw lots of seals and bald eagles and of course tried our hand with a crab pot. We had a large group and everyone found a place to comfortably rest their heads without issue. Kitchen was on the smaller side for such a large group but we made it work and the grill situation was amazing (multiple grills, crab boiling pot and a smoker!). And we loved knowing that proceeds from our rental went to support the animal shelter! Highly recommend this property and would stay there again if we brought a big group to Hood Canal.
OMG, I am touched by your review. Our family has treasured The Quilcene Bay Hideaway for years. Thank you so much for visiting and thank you for supporting our horse rescue and homeless animal farm!!
Great for kids, but not toddlers
We spent the holiday weekend out here and enjoyed our stay! However, I wish my kids were older to REALLY enjoy our stay. I think this house has a lot to offer the older kids - cargo netting, games, ping pong, foosball, kayaks, etc. But we put all our kids in the lower level for bedtime and they were scared of all the noise from above. Heads up, there is zero insulation between each level so you can hear every little noise. I think if the upstairs had bunk beds and/ or more twin beds we would've gladly put everyone up there and had zero issues! The lowest level would've been an excellent tv room/ game room for the adults to relax in but there were too many beds. All in all, we liked the house and area - lots of thoughtful details and the hot tub was our favorite! The internet is not reliable so don't plan on using it. Martha is an excellent host, even bought a pack and play for our stay and brought over dishwasher detergent when we couldn't find any. Thanks, Martha!
We had a great stay!
It was a nice quiet spot in the Olympic Peninsula.
Thank you for visiting our very special place!
