About Mr & Mrs, Ian and Jo Menhinick

I'm Jo and married to Ian. I'm a designer and Ian is an architect working in property management. Together we made a good team to, renovate, decorate and keep this property tip-top for our guests to enjoy their holiday.

Mr & Mrs, Ian and Jo Menhinick purchased this house in 2014

Why Mr & Mrs, Ian and Jo Menhinick chose Tywardreath and Par

The Gables has lots of history and was owned by my Grandparents in the 1950's to the 1970's. We bought it back in 2013 and fully renovated the property as a holiday house.

Aside from our own family history, The Gables is connected with the novels Daphne du Maurier wrote during her lifetime living close to the house at the Menabilly Estate and then at Kilmarth. We know that she visited the house and knew my grandparents quite well. Her book The House on The Strand is based around the village of Tywardreath, and there may be lots of other connections you can uncover for yourselves if are a du Maurier enthusiast.

What makes this house unique

The house is set near the heart of the village and looks down through the main street. South-facing, it is always bright and sunny at the front. The reinstated Victorian Veranda provides a wonderful place to sit and relax and watch the world gp by.

The house is only about a 20 minute walk to the nearest beach, Par sands, which is dog-friendly all year round. It's a lovely soft golden sandy beach, perfect for picnics and bathing in the summertime.

Quirkey house in an interesting village

  • 5 of 5

The house is excellently furnished and in good decorative order. The ground floor back room with on-suite worked well for a disabled member of the party. Be careful of the stairs; they are steep and slippery for bare-feet (as we found out)!

Go to the Rashleigh Inn, Polkerris for the mussels. The local community shop has an amazing selection of good food; try the duck eggs. The local butchers is great also; we brought home a joint and some of their frozen pasties.

Owner's Response: Thank you, we do try to keep everything tip-top and it's great to hear you found it a good place to stay with a disabled member of your party. There are so many options for accommodating people and their differing requirements at our house, so it's always great when a prospective guest like yourself take the time to enquire. I am always eager to make your stay as comfortable as possible. It's also worth mentioning that the lovely local shop, The Tywardreath Stores is only a 1 minute walk, Tom or Josh will also deliver free of charge, so anyone infirm needn't even leave the house if they don't want to. Our sheltered veranda is an ideal and safe place for provisions to be dropped off. When we renovated the property we did try to retain as much of the original character as possible, so it is a little quirky and the stairs are steeper than modern houses. Hopefully the strong rope handrail and the sturdy original banister rail help get up and down safely. Incidentally the rope rail was hand-spliced by the man who made all the knots for the mussel beds in Fowey and the bay! As with all stairs, caution must be taken of course. Here's a link (hope it works in this review) to a photo of the stairs for future guests https://www.dropbox.com/sc/p2va67m04j1q3q1/AAA9OzIdUgz5prXYHoRYOErha?preview=Front+door.jpg The Rashleigh Inn is a truly marvellous place to go for a drink and a meal out, an ideal place to get down to on the first evening of your stay. In the Spring and Summer when the evenings are light it's about an hour's walk along the coast path. And in the Autumn and Winter it's a 5 minute drive, such a cosy place, my favourite.

Par Sands, Polkerris Beach

The Gables is in the heart of the beautiful Cornish village of Tywardreath, designated an area of Outstanding Beauty. It is only a 15 minute walk from the house to the beach, Par Sands which is dog-friendly all year round. Polkerris beach, also very nearby is a stunning family friendly beach with a pub, restaurant and shop on the beach. Soft sand, shells, ideal for sand castles and paddling even in Winter! Canoes and wet suits etc also available for many types of water sports. The Eden Project is just a 5 minute drive from the house. Fowey is a 5 minute drive or a lovely 2 hour walk from the house around the Cornish Coastal Path. Fowey is a beautiful Cornish coastal town with lots of boating activity, popular for sailors. The whole surrounding area near the house was the subject in many of Daphne du Maurier's novels, and our house has its own special connection with them.

Mevagissey another fishing town is about half an hour's drive, Charlestown where they harbour and film square-rig old ship also close.

The house has lots of guides, maps and other information to hand to help our guests explore the local area.
