About the property

Venture to the heart of yuba river country and experience the rustic chic comfort of “glamping” (glamorous camping) in a 30’ pacific yurt. A remedy for 'nature deficit disorder, this is your opportunity to taste the magic of simple living in the round…

Located on the north san juan ridge at the edge of tahoe national forest, endless outdoor activities abound. Enjoy incredible hiking, crystal-clear swimming holes and world-class mountain biking trails during summer and pristine snow-play areas away from the crowds during winter. Take in gorgeous scenic drives and numerous points of historical interest--including malokoff diggins--from California gold rush period. Discover the active gold mining town of Allegheny, the scenic beauty of downieville or soak the afternoon away at sierra hot springs in sierra ville. The village of Nevada city--with all it has to offer--is just 20 minutes away.

Or simply relax...

As much a nature blind as a dwelling, the yurt is located on 5 peaceful acres of mixed oak and madrone woodland with a filtered view of the sierra foothills, a claw foot bath tub under the stars and much more. Light and airy with both propane and wood heat, the well-designed interior features a spacious kitchen, a comfy queen bed and a full bathroom. The kitchen is stocked for a cook with quality cooking equipment and is supplied with oils, sauces and spices. Tranquil, without phones or TV--but with WiFi—there are games and plenty of good books. A perfect anytime retreat!

About Kathy Ocean

We're Jim and Kathy Ocean, musicians and concert producers who decided to share our little piece of Russian River paradise--which we named 'RiverSea'--after landing in Guerneville the summer of 2004.

When we met, we lived between Jim's houseboat in the Martinez Marina and Kathy's yurt in the Sierra Foothills near Nevada City. Before moving to Guerneville, we sold the houseboat and turned the yurt property into a long-term rental. Having discovered how much we enjoy the vacation rental biz, we decided in 2013 to 'reclaim' the 'Yuba Yurt' for ourselves and fellow vacation rental adventurers. (Don't be surprised to see a houseboat in our future vacation rental offerings, as we both miss being rocked to sleep and waking to the sound of quacking ducks.)

We consider ourselves very lucky to be in the position of meeting wonderful people from all over the world. We take great pleasure in sharing our homes near Guerneville and Nevada City and creating spaces where people like you can relax, explore and recharge.

Kathy Ocean purchased this studio in 1997

Why Kathy Ocean chose Nevada City

In the mid 1990's, Kathy--a rural animal at heart--found herself going quietly mad while raising her young children in suburbia. One day a friend showed her a picture of a peculiar structure called a 'yurt' in the Whole Earth Catalog. From that moment, when feeling particularly frazzled, Kathy began visualizing & decorating a yurt atop a wooded knoll in the mountains. Inhabiting and adding detail to the visualization worked wonders as a calming device (and she did it often and enthusiastically). Several years later, while visiting friends in the mountains, Kathy spotted a flyer on a bulletin board at the local market for a yurt for sale on 5 acres. She immediately called the phone number, and ten minutes later walked into the real live version of the yurt and property she had been visualizing for years. (The rest as they say . . . is history.)

What makes this studio unique

There's nothing quite like living in a round space with only a tiny barrier between the inside and the outside. The energy flows freely. You feel comfortable and protected while fundamentally connected to nature around you. With all the basic amenities of the modern world, but without the clutter of more than you need, tensions tend to melt away leaving calm and clarity in its place. Plus--from the lightest snow to the heaviest rainfall, yurts create the most amazing soundscapes. If you appreciate nature and are curious about alternative and earth-friendly lifestyle choices, you owe it to yourself to spend some time in the Yuba Yurt.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Beautiful land, remote but North San Juan does have basic amenities. Quick response time and the Yurt is perfect! The kitchen is well stocked (you don't need to pack all your spices) and do indulge in the outdoor bathtub. Our dog was also so happy. We will be back!

Wooded Paradise

  • 5 of 5

The hosts were wonderful and communicative, wanting to make sure we arrived ok. My family and I loved the property and staying in this cozy yurt. My 3 year old and I enjoyed gorgeous sunset walks and boulder climbing nearby. The stars at night were amazing and the peace we experienced so far away from town was wonderful. Thanks for the games and beautiful Treehouse calendars which we enjoyed and for the woodburning stove that kept us warm all weekend. We hope to come back when it's warmer.

A Perfect Retreat

  • 5 of 5

I cannot begin to explain our satisfaction and appreciation for this vacation rental. It is perfect Glamping.... private and quiet, but also close enough to neighbors so that if you are not truly lovers of the rural setting, you would feel reassured. The yurt is really stocked for any type of gourmet cooking, which makes it easier when coming from afar... just need to stop in Grass Valley for groceries prior to heading to N San Juan. Once you reach the yurt, you won't want to shop... we spent mornings enjoying the nice vibes of the property and as the owners recommended, by noon we left and spent the day by the river, then returned to relax and by night fall the temp drops and you can cook in comfort. The owners left great what to do manuals for every question you could have regarding staying at the yurt and vacationing in the Yuba River area. The property and yurt are extremely clean and more than what we expected... if you need an escape and want to get the children out of a city setting, I highly recommend this vacation home!! We are already trying to plan our next trip (and we live in Miami... but well worth the 5 hour flight and 4 hour drive from San Fran... nature, rivers, great organic vegetables and fruit). The owners are communicative and there is a care taker who is a neighbor.... perfect directions provided by the owners as well. Many, many thanks for sharing your paradise... hope to be back soon!!

The yurt and the landscape did not disappoint! A comfortable retreat inside the yurt and beautiful oak-filled hillsides oak surrounding. We'll certainly make a return visit.

Private yurt in he woods just minutes from the Yuba!

  • 5 of 5

Total relaxation at this wild spot! All we had to bring was a couple sheets, books, and our swimsuits. Multiple swimming holes are all over the place within 10-15 minutes and Nevada City is a great little downtown equally close. The crickets, squirrels, and coyotes make the night music (and a little mouse as well). Super peaceful, pleasant, and a great little reading selection too!

Peaceful and Private

  • 5 of 5

This place has everything you need to enjoy a peaceful, private retreat. Quiet and at the end of a private road so no one is driving by at all. The claw-foot tub on the deck is a great way to cool off when it's hot or warm up if it's cold. Great view from the Yurt decks. Plenty of kitchen tools, spices and oils to create meals. Comfortable bed and plenty of seating. Of all the things you would not know you needed in the woods, the extremely reliable WiFi was an unexpected plus.

You bring sheets/pillowcases/towels, which is quite normal in vacation rentals. Taking our trash and recycling along when we left was different, but completely understandable considering the walls are vinyl and the wild-ness of the area where bears, coyotes and other animals reside.

All in all, a lovely relaxing stay in an area with plenty to explore. The popular river areas were crowded, but we found Day Use parks where we could get to the water away from the crowds. We were very pleased with our mini-vacation get-away before the hectic start of the school year. Excellent customer service from the owner, we had everything we needed.

The yurt was clean, well stocked and comfortable. The land was beautiful! It was very peaceful. Use the outdoor tub, it is fantastic! It is a lovely, private getaway. The owners provided very good directions and were responsive when we needed them and non-existent otherwise. We would go back!
