I grew up on the Iron Range and spent my high school years living in Ely. I feel a strong connection here and love spending time with family and friends.
My late husband and I spent most of our adult working years in Minneapolis where Dan worked in advertising at Brown and Bigelow and I as an R.N. at Mt. Sinai and later Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park. I am currently retired.
LaVonne Garcia purchased this cabin in 1985
We spent most of our weekends and vacation time in Ely with family in our early married years so when the opportunity to buy our own place came up, we knew we wanted to be on Eagle's Nest Lake 2. The lake is clean and clear and fishing is good. You are more likely to see pontoons than speed boats.
I love our lake home because it private but not remote. The two porches are great for relaxing and enjoying observing birds and wildlife on the lakeshore and lake. Bearhead State Park is just down the road with many hiking trails, and great swimming beach. On rainy days, enjoy visiting the International Wolf Center, Bear Center, the Soudan State Park underground mine or numerous shops and restaurants in the Ely area.
We had a group of fishermen at the cabin. I've got to say it was one of the most enjoyable experiences That we've had as a group. This is a yearly get together, and we've been to many places. The accommodations here were spot on. If we forgot to bring something, we found it. If it wasn't there, our hosts told us where we could find it, The fishing was more than adequate. We caught plenty of Walleye, Northern Pike, and Smallmouth Bass. The Ely golf course was a nice break from the fishing. The experience was so good, we booked it again for next year, and with this group, unless the accommodations are free, that's a rarity.
Breathtaking view which changes in hue and texture at sunup and sundown. Perfect for two grandchildren their parents, our son and daughter, Grandma and me. Activities there were varied and harmonious with the surroundings. The cabin had every convenience from a slower, happier bygone era. Everything was ready for us including first days' breakfast and snacks, fully stocked kitchen with all the amenities and cupboard full of spiced, oils, sugar, coffee, and little things one tends to forget while shopping on vacation. The shower water pressure was a delight to my wife and the whole cabin and surroundings clean and tended. Even the receptacles for recycling and garbage were clearly marked; capacious and right handy downstairs. Great neighbors who were genuinely helpful and kind. We already booked for next year.
My husband and I (both 55+) and my dad enjoyed our stay at this lovely lakeside property. Unfortunately, we were very busy with activities away from the cabin so we were unable to take advantage of the boats, outdoor dining or pizza oven.
This was still an ideal cabin for our purposes: very clean, two baths with showers, comfy beds, fully equipped kitchen for quick, hot breakfasts before heading out for the day. It would have been fun to have been able to hang out, dine al fresco, go for a boat ride or canoe on the lake, or just relax on the boat dock. The only drawback of this property is the lack of a/c when the weather turns hot. With heavy rain one night, we had to close the windows, but there were many fans which definitely helped.
Lavonne's property is a beautiful spot on the lake, and commands perhaps one of the best views of the western sunsets, simply gorgeous. Everything is there for a quiet and relaxing stay, clean, and neat as a pin. The home is very well maintained, and there is ample room for everyone. We caught very nice walleyes off the dock at sunset, and the two lakes provide excellent fishing for pike, bass, and walleyes.
I recommend this property with great enthusiasm, and I'd love a return trip. !!
Eagle's Nest Lake 2 is located between Tower and Ely, Mn just off Highway 169. Lake 1 and 2 are connected by a channel allowing use of both lakes. It is a clear water lake and is home to walleye, northern pike, bass and pan fish. This is a lake you will be more likely to see pontoons than speedboats. Kayaking is popular here. Bearhead State Park is just up the road and has many hiking trails, a great swimming beach and picnic area. It is common to see eagles, deer, beaver, and occasional black bears in the area.
On rainy days, you may want to visit the Soudan State Park underground mine for their historical or physics lab tour. There is also the International Wolf Center and the Bear Center near by. There are many good restaurants and shops to enjoy in Ely. Also, local museums will show you Ely's mining history. Visit historical Burntside Lodge and enjoy a pontoon tour with local guide. There is much to keep you busy in the Ely area.
