Check-in 2 PM and check- out 10 AM. 20 minutes from Cross City SW on Hwy 351, Horseshoe Beach is shaped like a horseshoe with an elaborate canal system. Our house is on a canal so there is a boat dock where you can tie up your boat @ the back of house. The perfect place to fish, boat, scallop or just set and relax on the front deck looking out at the Gulf.
Horseshoe Beach does not have a public beach
but does have two public docks where you can launch your boat.
The marina rents all kinds of recreational items and launch your boat if you don't like putting your trailer in saltwater.
We have Wi-Fi and DirecTV.
We are a non smoking resident
The master bedroom with queen size bed with a daybed and full bathroom. Second bedroom has queen sized bed and third bedroom has bunk beds twin on top and full on bottom. There is a futon full size bed in living room. The kitchen has gas stove microwave dishwasher cookware dishes . There is a gas and charcoal grill downstairs with a picnic table. A fish cleaning station and outside shower.
There are three bays under house for parking car and trailer.
Lived and worked in Charleston SC decide Horseshoe Beach was the place for me to retire so my wife and I moved to Horseshoe .
Reba Ewing purchased this house in 2012
Have been coming to Horseshoe beach for years, enjoyed the fishing and quite relaxed atmosphere here.
Enjoy the fantastic sunsets. The friendly people and the small fishing town in a part of Florida that has not been commercialized. So if you decide to visit our little town be prepare to relax and enjoy life in slow motion.
There are no public or private beaches in Horseshoe Beach.
We have 2 public boat ramp and the marina can sling your boat. The nearest beach is 30 miles north at Keaton beach.
We ha a great time at the Captains Quarters! The house was very nice and there was plenty of room, and had everything we needed! Reba was very helpful with teaching us how to clean our scallops!!! We will go sure be coming back!!!! Thank you again!
Horseshoe Beach is truly the “Last Frontier” we found the people to be friendly and very helpful. During our stay we collected 36 gallons of scallops and caught some really nice fish. Our stay at the Captains Quarters however was disappointing and in some cases unfortunate. The following review is meant to be more informative than it is to be critical and it is our hope that the owner’s will read this and make some much needed improvements.
The top step of the wooden staircase on the backside of the property was rotten and unsafe. We noticed dead roaches throughout the house and ants in the kitchen. The ant problem was so severe it took two days and a serious amount of Windex and bleach to get rid of. My wife and I along with our 15 month old son stayed in the master bedroom. It was extremely hot even with the ceiling fan and a standup fan set on high. We tried adjusting the thermostat from 75 to 68 but all that did was make the rest of the house freezing cold while the Master bedroom remained HOT! The 3rdbedroom, bunk beds, with a full size on the bottom and a twin on top was extremely small and other than a night stand it was the only furniture leaving barely enough room to turnaround. Most alarming was there was no emergency exit, NO WINDOWS OR SECOND DOOR. Had there been a fire in the hallway the occupants would be TRAPPED with no way for anyone to get to them and no way for them to get out. DO NOT allow children to stay in this room! In addition, the temperature of the hot water was so hot that if you weren’t careful it would scald you and the cold knob on the 2ndshower bathroom would only turn a few inches making it impossible to balance the temperature. In the 2nd bedroom the door knob to the door fell off and the door couldn’t be opened. Finally the chairs on the upper deck were dirty and full of leaves, one of the windows in the living room had a large crack with tape over it and the blue chairs under the carport were dirty, rusted and the paint was peeling off so badly that if you sat in them the paint would come off on your clothing.
1. If you can’t function without internet it is shared with a neighboring house so Wi-Fi is extremely slow.
2. At dead low tide there is no water in the canal so your boat will be in the mud until high
O.verall it was a great trip and we all enjoyed the time we spent with our family
We spent 3 weeks at Captains Quarters and the house itself is very nice and clean. It is on a canal and with the tides going in and out you cannot dock a boat, at least during February. The town itself is very quiet with no shops at all to browse through. They plan on opening one small seafood restaurant this spring so at least there will be an option of eating out. This is truly a location where if you want to stay in town and have some social interaction you will need to reach out and meet other people..neighbours and vacationers. We did meet a few couples and had dinner with them and a fire etc. Fishing opportunities are with charter boats and they want between $300 to $400 for 4 hours. This works well if you meet people and share the cost. My husband met a couple of fellows so ended up paying $100 since they split the $300. The closest town is Cross City for groceries, booze, McDonalds etc. Again, NO tourist shops or galleries. If you select Horseshoe Beach you will need to be of the mindset that you want to be in a small isolated community.....read a book, take a walk. Otherwise you will need to venture out to other towns hours away. February is quite cool as well so you will not bake in the sun if you are a sun worshiper. All in all a good trip, but a little too quiet and boring for us.
There are two parts to this review.
1. The house (Captain Quarters 1) was exactly as advertised. It was clean, well stocked, with plenty of room. All of the furniture was in good to very good condition. They had two recliners - my favorite way to take a nap. Maybe my favorite part of the house was the front deck. Almost every afternoon about 4pm we would sit on the front deck and look out over the Gulf of Mexico through the palm trees. We stayed the month of January and the temperatures was mostly in the low to mid 60's. We had a couple 50s days and a couple 80s days. We only used one of the three bedrooms and it was very comfortable. The bedroom also had a day bed and a recliner. This is a very pet friendly home and community.
2. The town of Horseshoe Beach is a secluded fishing village with a population around 200. We never saw near that many people but it was January.
The town has a post office but the Main Street Diner had closed. I heard when we were leaving that a local woman was going to reopen the Diner. That would be nice. There is no gas station in town. The only pub is Jakes and that is open Friday and Saturday night. Seven miles from Horseshoe Beach is a little food/grocery/gas station called Lillies. The food here was very good. Some of the best meals we had were at Lillies. They could charge whatever they want for gas since the next station is 13 miles away but the price was fair.
I loved Horseshoe Beach, it was exactly what I needed after the holidays. I fished almost everyday. We walked the dog every day and went to Shired Park several times a week. I was totally refreshed when we left. My wife found it much too secluded. She was not happy there the last week. Keep the seclusion of Horseshoe Beach in mind.
A clean, well stocked house in a quiet community. If that is what you are looking for this is an excellent place to stay.
The house is clean well-equipped roomy and very comfortable this is a small fishing community quiet and very friendly people. definitely will be back. Bring lots of groceries very few shopping opportunities I had the opportunity to meet the owners they are very gracious and accommodating The only drawback lack of cell service and the whether not being Cooperative for scalloping or fishing The kids had a great time and it was a very nice vacation
It was a cute house right around the corner from the boat ramp. We went fishing and scalloping the marina was in walking distance from the house and if you have kids I highly recommend renting a golf cart you can go everywhere on one. The house was equipped with everything we needed we will be returning soon. The ONLY thing I could say that was negative would be there is absolutely no cell phone service there so if you have family/friends meeting you there be sure they can contact you through the WiFi that is provided by the home owners, and the check out time is at 10am which was kinda hard on us but over all we had a great time.
