The Jasper Bay House is now taking reservations for the 2016 season.
This beautifully hand crafted Bay House was built from mature red and white pine logs that were harvested just 1/4 mile away down the Canadian Border Road. The trees were hauled the few hundred yards to our Jasper Lake homestead where they were cut with a portable sawmill into various sized lumber and then stacked, ricked and air dried for two years. Starting in 1993, Don raised the walls and rafters, and for three long and cold winters, he milled, molded, and planed the rough cut boards into ship lapped lumber that now grace the interior walls and also all the exterior siding for the Bay House. The kitchen cabinets were hand made, and the interior walls were sanded and varnished to a golden sheen.
The Bay House easily sleeps 6 guests (8 max) and there are dishes, bed linens, towels and washcloths provided for 8 guests. There are three upstairs bedrooms, the master bedroom has a queen bed and a single bed, and a private bathroom that has a large shower, lavatory, and toilet. The two other bedrooms each have one queen bed. The downstairs bathroom has a large tub/shower, lavatory, and toilet; plus a front loading washer and dryer.
There is a large, fully equipped kitchen with an outside L.P. gas grill. The Bay House kitchen has a full size 36 inch two door refrigerator with a bottom freezer, a 30 inch electric 5 burner range/ oven, a microwave, and a 12 cup drip coffee maker. The water supply is from a drilled well and inspected as safe by Lake County. We have a charcoal grill and smoker available upon request. (Charcoal and wood chips not incl.)
The 16 foot X 24 foot sitting area has a natural wood heating stove with plenty of firewood, and has comfortable lounging, plus a table for board games and cards for rainy days. There is a beautifully done three season window porch through a set of french doors to find peaceful seating and fantastic views of Jasper Lake. A comfy twin size day bed is located there as well.
The large dining area is located next to the kitchen and is overlooking the lake as well through a sliding glass door. The rough hewn table easily seats 8 guests.
The front deck, just off the dining room through the sliding glass door; overlooks Jasper Lake. It is 160 square feet in size with outside seating. Off the kitchen door is another 'L' shaped deck that is 192 square feet in size that faces south, west, and north.
An outside fire pit with bench seating is also available for guests to enjoy an evening campfire, roast marshmallows with the children, and enjoy a cocktail and/or a cold one. A great place to relax to try to stay awake and get a glimpse of possible northern lights.
An open air outside fish cleaning table is available as well. Three aluminum canoes with paddles, seat cushions, and life jackets come with the Bay House for guest use.

Growing up in Ohio, Don Beans was fascinated by stories written of the vast Northwoods by various authors. In particular were those stories written by author 'Jackpine' Bob Cary. Soon after high school, Don packed his belongings and headed 'Up North' to make his living as a guide and woodsman and 'livin' off the land'. He arrived in Ely during the April '83 thaw, where he started right away working at a local outfitting company preparing for the summer season. 'When I first arrived here in April '83, the moment I saw this place called the Northwoods; the place I read so much about growing up- I knew I was home'' Through the following years he worked at various resorts and outfitters until opening his own freelance guide business in 1988. In 1990, Don purchased the Jasper Lake homestead. That same year, he married Joan Kjorsvig. Both their dreams were turned into plans and thus the work began to achieve their goals which included the building of and outdoor adventure business.

We've all heard of 'Location, Location, and Location', and how important that is in marketing. The Jasper Lake Bay House and our Jasper Lake Guest House are situated within some of the very finest angling found in the state of Minnesota; if not the country and are nestled within the finest canoe area (BWCA/ Quetico) in the country. Day trip options abound with over three dozen area lakes easily accessible, plus countless more for extended trips. Don, along with Joan and their family have relentlessly pursued their original dream and have since added various packages to their Jasper Company business, such as outfitting, equipment rental, canoe rentals, and their high quality lodging. Our homes overlook beautiful Jasper Lake but we sell and promote our services to the dozens of other lakes surrounding us that will provide hours of canoeing fun and the multitude of angling opportunities. We here at Jasper Company specialize in the finest of smallmouth bass fishing, but have incredible walleye, largemouth bass, northern pike, lake trout, black crappie, bluegill, and even have access to designated stream trout lakes where there is angling for rainbow trout, brook trout, and splake. We have access to the Canadian border at Prairie Portage which allows even more upscale fishing adventures into Ontario's Quetico Park.
Early on in his guide years, Don recalls an old man approaching him one morning on a busy resort dock. The old timer eyed him as he readied a 19 square stern guide canoe for a day trip into Canadian waters; and he commenced some small talk. Don learned that he too was once a guide; a woodsman from yesteryear; and Don remembers well his advice given, 'It's best to keep your guests warm and dry, keep them full of expectations, provide good honest advice, and make sure they are well fed. That's your only job. These woods and the waters will do the rest, ...the area will sell itself.' That was ...and still is good advice. When you're here, you'll find that this area is not just about the superb angling; but that it's really all about itself- the Northwoods. And it is impressive- the scenic views, the wildlife sightings, and it's about that relaxing feeling of experiencing pure remoteness. The Northwoods will become a part of you. Jasper Lake shares in that feeling; it is a small quiet lake, a blue gem in the pine woods. Don and Joan raised their family here; they garden and grow vegetables here, they've raised chickens, have enjoyed and still enjoy the companionship of several sporting dogs, they hunt and fish the woods and waters that surround them, they hike, ski and snowshoe the winter woods. They have literally built their home and lifestyle from the forests. They thoroughly enjoy the Northwoods life here and now they want to share it with you through their hand crafted Jasper Bay House, the Jasper Guest House (VRBO # 446338), and their Jasper Company.
My wife and our daughter, husband and 2 kids just spent a wonderfully relaxing weekend at Jasper Bay House.
After having stayed 4 nights at the Jasper Guest house in June with my fishing buddies, we were fortunate to grab a weekend at Don's Bay house.
Don's craftsmanship is a joy to behold and we felt completely at home.
We had two families of four and we were more than comfortable! The house was beautiful...especially the view of Jasper Lake! Don was very friendly and helpful. It was a great weekend and we look forward to booking again for next year!!
The Jasper Lake Bay House was perfect. We had 2 couples staying for 4 days and were very comfortable. The views from the cabin are great. The lake was wonderfully quiet and felt just like being in the BWCA but with the convenience and safety of the cabin. The craftsmanship in the home is great. We were able to cook some great meals in the kitchen and really appreciated having a gas grill. This was the first time we've ever rented a cabin in the Ely area, and The Jasper Lake Bay House set the bar pretty high. We would certainly come back again!
We had a fantastic 2-week stay at the Jasper Lake Bay House. The house is beautifully constructed and thoughtfully furnished, the location is excellent for access to the BWCA, hiking trails in Superior National Forest and occasional trips to Ely. I was there for 2 weeks with my 3-year old and 8-year old, and we were joined by my parents one week and friends with their kids the next. All of us were comfortably and happily accommodated. There were beavers and otters and frogs and loons and fishing and swimming and canoeing to entertain us all day to day, and lots of nearby places to explore when we wanted to venture further afield. Don was an excellent host, responsive to all our needs and requests, and super helpful in equipping my daughter and I for her first trip to the BWCA. Best of all, the whole property just has a great light and positive energy about it that make it an excellent place to relax and rejuvenate. I've rented a lot of cabins in the Ely / Grand Marais areas, and I'll be back here!
We loved our stay at the Jasper Lake Bay House! There was plenty of room to spread out and just enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The house was sparkling clean and completely stocked with everything we needed. The craftsmanship that went into this house was outstanding. It was the perfect place to recharge and relax. Canoeing on this scenic lake with it's mostly wilderness lakefront was beautiful. Don was an awesome host, and very helpful. Our young adult kids said this was the best cabin we have ever rented. Can't wait to come back again!

The Bay House has been designed with your comfort in mind and our staff can also provide you with a variety of all the little things that will make your vacation memorable. It is fully equipped for a family or group of 6 (8 max.) individuals.
Looking directly north from the front deck; the next road is approx. 75 miles away- and that's Canada's Highway 11. There's not a structure that lies between, just remote Northwoods wilderness and gorgeous views of Jasper Lake. Bring a camera and be prepared for breathtaking sunsets, possible northern lights; and the ever present family of loons, and the bald eagle that uses one of our few large white pines as a roost.
By using our Jasper Lake Bay House as a base, there are over three dozen easily accessible water bodies where guests can enjoy superb fishing, great canoeing, and fun exploring- all with a day trip. Hundreds of other pristine clear water lakes are available in the wilderness area where guests can paddle their canoe(s) on more extensive day trips or even go camping. While you are here, we can design day trips that test your physical skills with some of our 'Paddle Power Trips'.
This area is an outdoor recreation mecca. You'll enjoy swimming in these pristine lakes, and you'll find many nearby US Forest Service maintained hiking trails, and some great bicycling routes. This area is one of the finest in the country for bird watching as well.
There are a few naturalists in the Ely area that would enjoy taking you out on a nature hike, a paddle, or a drive to show you Northwoods sights and wildlife. Many of these educational outings can be arranged as a half day or full day venture. Jasper Company can help you arrange these fun and informative trips. Some offer photography ideas and classes.
Did you know that Ely is coined 'Canoetown, USA', and that it is; but Ely is also a wonderful, quaint small town with a grand reputation for the arts. Museums, studios and galleries abound and arts and craft stores are found everywhere. Just find a place to park your car and start walking, Ely isn't big in size, just big in things to do! On any summer Tuesday night, the air is serenaded by the sound of 'Ely's Tuesday Night Live'; as local musicians take to the sidewalks and perform their talents. There is also a Farmers Market at Whiteside Park, the town center where you can purchase fresh locally grown produce. There are many local plays that perform regularly that you can attend. When you're hungry, there is no shortage of great places to dine; from breakfasts to lunches to dinners; and a few bakeries and coffee shops to quench that sweet tooth and Java fix in between. You'll find local pubs and even a microbrewery where you can enjoy a cold one, visit with friends, or catch that ball game on the tube.
Just some activities to add to your Bucket List- visit the International Wolf Center, the North American Bear Center, the Dorothy Molter Museum, the Soudan Underground Mine, Bois Forte Heritage Center and Cultural Museum, Ely Arts and Heritage Center, Sisu Heritage Homestead Tours, etc...
Gambling? Consider a fun filled evening at the Fortune Bay Casino located just 22 miles south of Ely on beautiful Lake Vermilion. Enjoy great food, lots of drinks, and the scent of money is strong in the air.
Golf? Bring your clubs, there are plenty of courses within 80 miles of our Bay House. Check out WildNorthGolf on the internet.
Autumn Fishing Fun! It is found right here. Numerous lakes abound with gamefish and tempt you to try your luck. With a bucket of minnows, slip bobbers and jigs; you can explore area waters for some superb smallmouth bass angling, tangle with huge northern pike, stringer some great tasting walleyes and scrappy black crappies.
Enjoy Upland Hunting? Northeast Minnesota was rated #1 in the nation for ruffed grouse drumming counts in 2014 and we are experiencing an upswing in the cyclic grouse population. We have some great wingshooting for the thunderous Mr. Grey. Bring your pointer(s), and setter(s) and try your luck within the thousands of acres of public lands surrounding our two guest houses. Lots of ski trails, hiking trails and logging roads to walk, plus logging clearcuts and beaver slough edges that abound in beaked hazel, both green and speckled alder, young aspen, wild rose and balsam thickets.
All in all, the Ely area and surrounding Northwoods is a great place to visit and we hope you choose to hang your hat at our seasonal Jasper Lake Bay House or even our year round Jasper Lake Guest House VRBO #446338.
