Located on the edge of the picturesque village of Mauzac, the house is reached along a private thoroughfare serving just three houses. Nestled into the escarpment, the house is east facing and enjoys wonderful sunrises over the Dordogne, with stunning river views from four of the five bedrooms. The manicured garden with 10 x 5 swimming pool enjoys all day sun and leads directly to the banks of the Dordogne, Mauzac's barrage providing safe, still waters for fishing, sailing, canoeing and generally messing about on the river. The L-shaped property has been extensively remodelled and renovated and is a stylish, contemporary family property, yet retaining all of it's original character with striking exposed beams. The double-height 50 sqm kitchen/dining area and 55 sqm enclosed terrace with dining table and chairs, make the house perfect for relaxing, socialising and enjoying the pleasures this region has to offer - wine, wonderful cuisine and the best starry skies you will ever have seen! If you wish to retire inside, the 40 sqm living room provides ample seating, UK TV and music system. The house offers five bedrooms in total, four doubles and one bunk room, with four bathrooms. Bedroom one and bedroom five feature en suites, ground floor bedroom two has an adjacent bathroom, while bedrooms three and four share the first floor bathroom. Bedrooms three and five also each provide a double sofabed in the room.

We are a family of 3, currently living back in the UK after 20 years of living and working overseas, most recently in Phuket, Thailand. Enjoying being back in the UK, whilst our son is getting used to the change in temperature, amongst other things!
Krista purchased this House in 2002
Why Krista chose Mauzac-et-Grand-Castang
We were attending a friend's son's christening in Cadouin in the summer of 2002 and stayed in The Barrage Hotel in the village. We wandered along the river to see the Maison de Passeur and immediately fell in love with the garden first of all and then on further exploration, the house. We moved into the house in January 2003 to start renovating and quickly realised we had taken on more of a project than we had anticipated! Our son was born in Bergerac in late 2003 and we lived and worked on the house until 2005, when we headed back to Asia. We have continued to enjoy the house and the surroundings every summer since.
What makes this House unique
The location. The house is beautiful, but having the river at the bottom of the garden is wonderful. The sunrises, the tranquility, the views, the reflections, the wildlife, the stars, the pretty village - all makes for an idyllic, relaxing time.

An incredible place and very unique.
The location of this property is perfect overlooking the Dordogne. The garden goes right down to the river but usefully for children there is a small fence which doesn't compromise the view but keeps small people in! The house itself is very nicely decorated and to a high standard. I couldn't recommend this place more highly.
So glad you enjoyed your stay Oliver, we look forward to welcoming you back to L'Escapade in the future! Krista
Beautiful & restful retreat right on the Dordogne
What a wonderful retreat for one or two families, with great access to river, pool, castles, delicious food, and all that the Perigord region has to offer. The owners were extremely responsive and attentive to our requests, making sure that our stay was as easy and fun as possible. The house is in beautiful shape, well laid out for multiple families but still allowing for privacy, and is equipped with almost anything you could think of needing during your stay. Because the garden and pool are across the small dirt lane and enclosed by a large fence, we were extremely comfortable with lots of little children running freely. Definitely consider this property as you look for places in Perigord!
Thanks for the lovely review - we're delighted that you enjoyed your stay at L'Escapade and hope you visit us again in the future! Best wishes, Krista
Lovely house and location for a family summer holiday
We stayed for two weeks in mid-August.
L'Escapade is a very comfortable and quiet house on the banks of the Doredogne. There's a large, well equipped kitchen with everything you need. Sitting room and bedrooms are comfortable with everything in good condition, clean and nicely decorated. The downstairs stayed remarkably cool given daytime temperatures in the 30s, and there were plenty of fans for the upstairs rooms. The pool is newly renovated (the photo showed it before) and if you want a serious swim, the river is at the bottom of the garden and just the right temperature. There's also an option to rent a kayak, SUP or sailing boat. For bicyclists, there are proper hills for the keen and easy rides along the canal for the rest.
The village is very quiet as it is not on a main road; it has a shop for the basics (worth ordering your croissants in advance if you want to be sure) and a good bar-cum-restaurant, La Banane, with tables overlooking the river on the village 'green'. It's not fancy but does the job.
The location is very well placed for visiting many of the best sites in the Dordogne within an hour (Beynac, Domme, Castelnaud, pre-historic caves which you need to book months in advance, etc.); Tremolat and Limeuil are very charming and have lots more restaurants. Lalinde has a supermarket, weekly market and boulangerie and is about 10 minutes in the car. Bergerac Aiport is an easy 35-40 minute drive.
Krista made our arrival and settling in very straight forward, and was always quick to help answer any questions.
All in all, definitely recommended... and you really do see the stars.
Thanks so much for the lovely review, we're always delighted when guests enjoy the house and surroundings as much as we have over the years.
Great house next to the dordogne!!
We we're in Krista's house during 1 1/2 week with 11 persons. It fit's great. The house is very nice and very well furnished. The garden was big with a very nice swimming pool. The village of Mauzac is just a few steps away. Very nice place to stay!
So glad you all had a good time Yvonne and thanks for your lovely comments!
