Close enough to downtown and shopping, yet avoids beach traffic and congested parking. Our nest is a private home with a soundfront beach and dock where you can enjoy playing with your pooch, swimming, boating, kayaking, fishing, and watching beautiful sunsets along Santa Rosa Sound. The cottage provides a complete kitchen, with large coffee maker, full sized refrigerator, stove, microwave, toaster, and cooking utensils, etc. Entertainment includes a digital TV and high speed internet via Wifi. Each bedroom has a queen bed, and we can provide extra mattresses for adults or children. If you're looking for something smaller but similar, we also have a bungalow house right next door. Meet Steve and Tara: he is a marine biologist involved in marine wildlife response, and studies the dolphins in Choctwahatchee Bay and Santa Rosa Sound. She is a child development counselor and therapist. Our goal is to make our quaint cottage on the Sound into a special place where our guests can enjoy a relaxing time viewing wildlife and appreciating the natural beauty of this waterfront hideaway. We are happy to show visitors around by kayak, canoe, and boat!
Steve Shippee purchased this bungalow in 2002
The ShipAhoy Nest is a very quaint cottage situated along the unspoiled stretch of Santa Rosa Sound just between Fort Walton Beach and Navarre. The property is naturally landscaped and well maintained. The dock is accessible by boat, making this an ideal location for vacationers desiring to bring their own watercraft. Trailer parking is available, and a very good public boat ramp is less than three miles away. We provide weekly housekeeping service, cable TV and high speed internet.
Our cottage has room to cook and relax, a private setting with ample parking, overhanging oak and hickory trees, and easy access to the waterfront at an affordable price. This is the perfect little getaway nest for a couple or small family that doesn't need a large house for a short stay. There is also a second bungalow house that is right on the water, with really great views. We treat our guests as family - just one stay and you will always remember the good life on Santa Rosa Sound. We cherish developing lasting friendships and hope that our guests come back time and again to enjoy our natural oasis of old-time Florida Panhandle. You can't find this in Walmart or at a condo in Destin.
The owner was very helpful and friendly. The cottage is located away from the hustle and bustle of tourist traffic but still close enough to several beaches so that you may enjoy attractions. The cottage has everything you need for cooking and is located near several restaurants. We would stay here again for sure.
The property was more than described, it's peaceful and quiet and very pretty. Steve met us when we arrived and gave us some great advice on what to do and when to do it as to avoid traffic! :) Cooper was there to welcome us as well, and my two girls LOVED him (the dog :)). The house was perfect size for the 4 of us, my husband, and 2 14 year olds. It had everything you could possibly need, including a coffee grinder which was a HUGE bonus since I accidentally brought full bean coffee :). The house is just a very short walk to the water with beautiful views of the sound. Thanks so much to Steve for sharing his property and vast knowledge of the area with us to make our vacation perfect!
Our stay at the ShipAhoy house was an excellent home away from home. The dwelling was private, well maintained, spacious, fully stocked, and tranquil. We were able to enjoy the use to the fishing pier and even caught some catfish. We highly recommend making your reservation with Steve and Tara. We are looking forward to our next visit.
I was blessed to stay here for 3 weeks. It was perfect as I wanted a getaway without the crowds of tourists. The house is adorable, fully equipped, clean, charming. The waterfront is beautiful. The owners were wonderful, kind, accomodating, couldn't have asked for a better experience. They gave us information on good places to eat, hooked us up with someone doing sailing excursions which ended up being totally private and amazing.
It is located close to anything you would need/want.
Fantastic experience, thank you!!!
Steve our host met us and was wonderful in directing us to good places to eat . The cottage was fully outfitted and clean. It was wonderful to have a place to stay with our two little furbabies .
However, we were very disappointed with the location of the cottage which is situated close to Hwy 98 and not the water. From the websites pictures we assumed that the cottage had a sight line to the sound with a deck for viewing right outside it. The weather for us was not the best with rain, clouds and lots of wind so a view of the sound would have been ideal and what we expected. As it was, the deck is outside the main house and only accessible by walking around another house and through trees and shrubs to see the water and use the pier and deck area.
The Shipahoy nest is a private setting along Santa Rosa Sound with ample waterfront and grassy lawns for your relaxation. A quaint cottage is located 1 mile from Hurlburt AFB, and 11 miles from the sparkling beaches of Navarre. The bustling town of Fort Walton Beach lies 4 miles east, followed by the sugar white sands of Okaloosa Island, and then Destin just 15 miles further away. If you seek a peaceful hideaway, you will find it at the ShipAhoy Nest.
Ask to borrow our kayaks or canoe, or bring your own! There are numerous types of fish to catch off the docks, or from a kayak. The opposite side of the sound is undeveloped preservation lands belonging to Eglin AFB, and is mostly closed to the public except for the shoreline. Natural fringing marsh and submerged vegetation lines the shoreline, and wildlife is abundant. If you enjoy birdwatching, this is great place to fill some of your life list. We regularly see ospreys, herons, brown pelicans, blue jays, cardinals, purple martins, and hummingbirds. Part of the year, we also enjoy spotting kingfishers, bald eagles, and white pelicans. Bottlenose dolphins are regular visitors in Santa Rosa Sound, and are more common during late summer and fall just off our dock.
There's no better place to enjoy a beautiful Northwest Florida sunset than from our waterfront. We have a great view of the night skies and full moons; watching watercraft and barges passing quietly by on the sound; and hearing the roar of thunderboats as they zoom down the Intracoastal. With advance notice, we are happy to plan a boating excursion on one of our own vessels.
