Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom,1 Bath~Across From Marsh, Downtown St. Marys, 5 blocks to Waterfront

This 800 sq ft cottage is loaded with light and boasts ten windows, nine French doors and has hardwood flooring and ceramic tile throughout. Pocket doors disappear to provide a modern open floor plan with light traveling unobstructed from the North River sunrise to the sun room sunset.

When I acquired this property in 2002, this free standing detached cottage had to wait it's turn while the main house and upstairs apartment remodels were completed. Many nights were spent with graph paper designing the cottage remodel inch by precious inch. Modern conveniences were incorporated: a private laundry center, full kitchen replete with dishwasher, built in microwave, bar top seating, slide in stove and pass through, a pamper walk in shower with dual heads on opposing walls and a king sized sleigh bedroom just off the bath. All interior doors were changed to pocket doors......to allow closing off rooms without doing the 'door dance.' In 2007, the cottage remodel came to fruition and in 2009, the sun room addition completed my vision of what the cottage should be. Guests now have more room to stretch out and relax.

It was fun to take such a clean line modern space and take a more contemporary approach with furnishings. There is a micro suede queen sleeper sofa, love seat and ottoman as you enter into the sun room. In one corner there is a small office area with a writing desk and filing cabinet. Providing additional storage are some vintage corner cabinets. The sun room seats seven. The queen sleeper sofa allows extra guests private sleeping quarters. To ensure that all guests are equally comfortable, we installed a separate A/C return just for the sun room.

As you leave the sun room and enter the sitting room, there is another full sofa, leather love seat, coffee table and corner chair with four rush bar stools at the bar top providing seating for ten. There is a 42' flat screen in there along with a DVD player and movie collection. We loaded the wall above the bar top with light hearted coastal artwork. There is a fee standing armoire that allows extra closet storage.

Your bedroom awaits you with a very comfortable King sized sleigh bed, gorgeous stained glass above the headboard, another TV/DVD player atop the drawered bureau at the footboard and a private entrance to the bath. From the bedroom French doors, you can spy the North River Marsh.

A 'common' patio area separates the cottage from the main house and upstairs apartments. Charcoal grill, fire pit and tables and chairs for eight welcome al fresco entertaining.

Beautiful magnolia trees attract a wide variety of birds on the property and bird baths are busy with activity. The trees are peppered with soothing wind chimes and the breeze off the marsh makes them sing.

This is an established older neighborhood bordering the marsh in downtown St. Marys. From the property, you can watch boats making their way through North River as they begin and end a day on the water. Several times a day, you can spot the Cumberland Ferry as she travels to and fro from St. Marys to the Island.

Whether you are vacationing, looking for property, or working, Loggerhead Turtle Cottage will be your perfect home away from home. Of all my rental units, this cottage is the most desired for its design, economy of space, energy efficiency, open floor plan, modern furnishings and privacy.

About Elizabeth Gray

Believe it or not, I am FROM St. Marys! I am Elizabeth Gray and I have always known that St. Marys is special. My sisters and I had an idyllic childhood here in our sweet little corner in SE Georgia. So many good memories.....loving parents, wonderful friends, roller skating and bike riding and boating and flying over the town (my Dad was a pilot and ran the little airfield for a time). Walking to elementary school with my mom (she was my third grade teacher and I don't think I've ever gotten into as much trouble as I did in her class! Everyone kept telling me that I was the teacher's pet and I think I must have started to believe them.....not so much!)

Playing on my first softball team, getting my first job as a fifth grader at the local library (when it was on the second floor of Orange Hall).....those books smelled so good and I even had my own little desk and stamp! And got paid!!! From my mom and dad's front porch was where I started my first little business: a summer craft camp where children came and created artwork, played croquet, rode bikes, did cemetery rubbings, learned karate, performed plays and learned how to pitch a tent on overnight camping trips. This was probably the prelude that led me to a management degree and the creation of Gray's Gallery and Custom Frame Shop in 1981.

It's hard to believe that was over 30 years ago. For about as long as I've had the shop, I've been in the rental business. In 2003, I entered a different phase of rental property: the 'Vacation Rental Business.' I've met many wonderful people, made some lifelong friends and have been very busy ever since! Hopefully, I'll meet you!

Elizabeth Gray purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Elizabeth Gray chose St Marys

Since I can remember, I have always loved this downtown St. Marys home. I have many fond memories of pick up softball and kick ball games played with childhood friends in this neighborhood. When the property became available for sale, I immediately put a binder on it. Truman and Ada Pease built the main house in 1947 as an upstairs/downstairs duplex. Sometime in the late seventies, the garage was converted to an apartment as well. The potential of the detached cottage intrigued me.

What makes this cottage unique

There was always something about this home that attracted me to it. (1) its juxtaposition on the corner property itself, (2) the two story brick house with detached cottage, and (3) the marsh views & breezes afforded from the front yard. While there are shade trees, the property itself is sunny and bright. Love the hardwood floors and all the windows, and the different living levels, decks and patios. No matter where you are, it feels private. Over the years, I have collected some really pretty antiques and have framed some beautiful artwork. It was so much fun to scatter some of my favorite things here for you to enjoy!

Great place to stay, close to downtown St Marys

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed the Loggerhead Turtle Cottage. Very comfortable and homey, with all the amenities you could want. Full kitchen, dishwasher, washer and dryer, lots of sofas and TVs, etc. Its your own little house for the extent of the stay. The owner is great to work with, responsive, and takes care to make your stay great. The cottage is minutes from downtown by car and within walking distance, and bikes are included in the rental. Really good spot to stay to get to Cumberland Island, which is why we were there.

Home away from Home

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely stay we had at the Loggerhead Turtle Cottage. It was comfortable, very clean, well stocked with necessities and very well organized. It was in a quiet neighborhood, but close enough to town that we were able to walk to town for breakfast or just a stroll along the waterfront. Elizabeth was very attentive and available for anything we needed although everything we needed was in the cottage! We will definitely stay at the Loggerhead Cottage again when we visit St. Mary's!

Great place to stay while visiting the area

  • 5 of 5

Elizabeth's cottage is a wonderful place to stay if you are visiting St Mary's and the surrounding area. My son and I stayed here during a visit to the Okefenokee and Cumberland Island. Each day, it was great to come home to this spot. The place is immaculately clean and very comfortable. Elizabeth does a great job of providing instructions in the cottage which let you know where anything that you might need would be. I would recommend this to anyone who was looking for a place in St Marys.

Great Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

We just spent a week at the comfortable and cosy Loggerhead Turtle Cottage and wish we had booked a longer stay. It was so peaceful and quiet and conveniently located to all the places we wanted to visit: Cumberland Island, Okefenokee Swamp, Jekyll Island, Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge. The cottage is supplied with just about anything you need. We especially liked all the artwork everywhere, the comfy bed, and the wonderful shower. We would definitely stay here again!

Wonderful, relaxing, welcoming

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful month long stay at the cottage this past February. Elizabeth has the cottage stocked with everything you need for a few days to 30 plus days with the exception of food of course. When we arrived there were snacks, cold drinks and wine for us humans and dog treats and a water bowl for our dog. We immediately felt very comfortable. The cottage is ideal for 2 people and a pet and is very clean and comfortable. The town is small but offers enjoyable walking, very friendly, fantastic exercise classes at "Just Dance" on Church St and a few restaurants. We especially enjoyed Riverside Café and the town and surrounding areas are very dog friendly. Easy trip over to Florida. Would definitely come again and strongly recommend Turtlehead Cottage as a place to stay.

Cumberland Island National Sea Shore:

Cumberland Island is a must see/do while you are here.....you get tickets at the National Park Service Office (and they have a pretty cool gift shop upstairs) and buy your ferry tickets at Lang's Seafood Office at the waterfront. Beautiful, pristine beaches, shelling, wild horses and old Carnegie homes for the history buff in you. Here is an 800 #

Cumberland Island National Seashore is the largest and southernmost barrier island in Georgia. The park is the home to approximately 36,000 acres of pristine maritime forest, undeveloped beaches, freshwater lakes, wide brackish marshes and over 9,800 acres of Congressionally designated Wilderness. The Seashore was authorized by Congress in 1972 and is administered by the National Park Service.

The Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island, Georgia is a phenomenal place dedicated to conservation, education and rehabilitation of sick and injured turtles. Jekyll also has bike paths all around the island for bicyclists.

Museums:

In St. Marys, there is a Submarine Museum loaded with all sorts of artifacts.............and there is National Park Service Cumberland Island Museum as well. The Georgia Radio Museum and Hall of Fame is now open at the St. Marys Convention and Visitor Bureau.

Libraries:

We have a St. Marys Public Library on Herb Bauer Drive, our County Public Library is in Kingsland, and we also have a Bryan Lang Historical Library at the County seat in Woodbine.

Fernandina Beach, Florida is my favorite place, besides Cumberland to walk the beach, sun, swim and play. Downtown Fernandina is loaded with shops and restaurants and bars. The downtown marina is full of boaters navigating up and down the Intercoastal waterway. (The marina office also sells nautical charts of the area.) Fernandina has done a beautiful job with their downtown district. They have a huge annual art show, the Shrimp Festival, the second weekend in May. It’s impossible to go there and not come away with a treasure. They also have a silk stocking district with interesting architecture......Pippi Longstocking was filmed in one of those houses. Fort Clinch is a state park there with bike paths and nice beaches as well.

Folkston, Georgia has a train center, the Folkston Funnel with a train watching platform for the 60 or so trains that pass thru daily, and also an entrance to the Okefenokee Swamp Park, designated a National Wilderness Area: 700 square miles of land, water and wildlife in South Georgia and North Florida.

St. Augustine, Florida If you like to photograph birds, the Alligator Farm

is terrific. They have rare and exotic birds, reptiles, and mammals. They just in the last while added a zip line course over their Zoological Park.............my friends did it and were grinning for days. St. Augustine is also home to the Ripley Believe it or Not Museum and the Potter Wax Museum, the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum, World Golf Museum, Imax theatre, the Fountain of Youth, San Sebastian Winery, the Castillo de San Marcos National Fort, Mantanzas National Monument, Marineland and a beautiful waterfront and marina, peppered with interesting shops and restaurants and bars.

Savannah, Georgia

A little bit more of a trek, but so worth it. The town is steeped in history, beautiful architecture, parks, restaurants and shops. The waterfront is inviting with walks, benches, boat traffic and interesting shops, bars and tourists. Tybee Island is just a little further and sports a great beach.

Fishing

You can fish off downtown at the fishing pier at the waterfront park, or at the Meeting St. boat ramp. You can also charter fishing expeditions.
