About the property

Lorton Vale - a hidden Lakeland gem 8 miles from Keswick. 4 bedrooms, sleeps 9

A large 18th century farmhouse with outstanding views, and lots of original features and character. Hillside location overlooking the Vale of Lorton - walk out the back onto the open fells, or down a footpath to the village shop & pub in 20-30 mins. Wonderful varied walking near - from beautiful lake shore paths right through to the majestic Grasmoor & Buttermere fells. Excellent mountain biking trails in Whinlatter 3 miles ride away (secure bike store available). And a hot tub with a view that you can reserve to enjoy at the end of the day!

(There is a hot tub charge of £10 a night to cover the cost of heating the water).

High Swinside Farmhouse is one of three adjacent cottages at High Swinside. It has a well-equipped kitchen/diningroom, a comfy lounge with sofas, tv/dvd, and an open fire. There are 4 bedrooms sleeping 9 in 7-9 beds (depending on how you want them made up: 2 twins, 1 ensuite double/twin, 1 family room with double & single or can be 3 singles). One of the bedrooms and the shower room are on the ground floor. The family bathroom is upstairs, and the double bedroom has an ensuite shower room. See photos for more details. (An adjacent cottage can be booked - linked to the Farmhouse by lockable connecting door if you need to sleep 2 more).

The 3 High Swinside cottages share the lovely garden with superb views, quiet spaces, benches, picnic table, hammock, and wood-fired hot tub! Free range hens supply delicious eggs. Well-behaved dogs are welcome - and there is a small enclosed wooded area where dogs can run off their leads in safety.

Keswick 8 miles. Cockermouth 6 miles.

About Diana Clarke

I've done many things in my life (joiner, homeopath, walking guide, smallholder...) I've built wardrobes, run walking holidays, milked goats, made cheese - but always my heart has been in the Lake District, and now I have the good fortune to live in one of its most tranquil valleys. The Vale of Lorton is truly a Lakeland hidden gem! You'll find I live just across from the cottages with my cat and hens - in case you need any help, advice, or free range eggs!

Why Diana Clarke chose Cockermouth

Beside the views? High Swinside has lovely old buildings with history and character. The main Farmhouse was built in 1741 and at one time the Jennings brothers had their first brewery here using the pure spring water from deep in the hill behind the house. Now the water is UV filtered to make sure it's pure, but it still delicious, natural, and chemical-free. The other two cottages were built a little later - Little Swinside was first built as a barn, and High Swinside Cottage was added as a workers cottage. All three cottages have bags of character with an occasional tilted floor or curved wall, and with old oak beams in most rooms. Some kitchen beams in the Farmhouse even have their original meat hooks!

What makes this cottage unique

High Swinside's views are special - even in the Lake District. The cottages have an idyllic elevated position on the flank of Swinside fell affording sweeping views over the Lorton valley - from Melbreak overlooking Crummock Water in the south around to the misty Scottish mountains in the north. It's a view that makes you want to just sit in the garden and take it all in for a while! The valley is also very peaceful and tranquil despite being 6 miles from Cockermouth and 8 miles from Keswick. You'd expect it to be busier, but somehow despite the great walking and the mountain biking trails near, it gets overlooked by many visitors to the Lakes. Whinlatter's trails put the 'mountain' back into biking for mountain bike enthusiasts (and the cottages have a secure bike shed). Majestic Grasmoor, Grisedale Pike, and Hopegill Head lie behind the property; the beautiful Loweswater and Buttermere fells are close by down the Vale not forgetting Melbreak, and Rannerdale Knotts with its bluebells and the views of 3 lakes. Each of the lakes has a lovely lake shore path around it, and some of the best views can be gained from easy to reach vantage points like Foulsyke, Scale Hill and Low Fell. The village of Lorton with its church, 1000 year old yew tree, pub and village shop is 15-20 mins walk away, and there's a lovely circular stroll through the valley that brings you back to High Swinside again.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I really wanted to say that we had a wonderful stay last weekend. The cottage was lovely, spacious but cosy and the location was perfect - peaceful and with easy access to a superb part of the lakes. Thank you for being so welcoming and informative and a special thanks for patiently answering our 4yr old grandson's many questions! It was an ideal environment for young children (as long as they don't fall in the pond!!). We will definitely be back. We have a couple of friends who I know would love the place so we could perhaps book the smaller cottage.

Comfortable, friendly, well located; loved it!

  • 4 of 5

The views surrounding the farmhouse are stunning. The accommodation in the farmhouse is excellent and flexible, clean and well appointed. That rarest of things in a self catering house was also present: a sharp knife! All very good indeed. Thanks Diana for your welcome and we hope to be back in future! X

lovely cottage in a beautiful location

  • 4 of 5

A very comfortable well equipped cottage situated on a hillside with outstanding views of the surrounding countryside. We had a few problems with the heating but Diane was close at hand to resolve the situation. The hot tub was the icing on the cake, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Because of the difficulties with the heating Diane compensated us by not charging for the hot tub. A very enjoyable weekend and Diane was a lovely, helpful host.

Owner's Response: I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay and that the misbehaviour of the thermostat didn't spoil things for you (now sorted thanks to my heating engineer!) Do come again - you were lovely guests and it was great to meet you all - and have Lucy's help with collecting the eggs! Best wishes, Diana

We have just had a fantastic family weekend at High Swinside. The position of the property is amazing, looking over the valley to the solway and Scotland. We were treated to a starry frosty night (in the hot tub) followed the next night by a glorious sunset. We all slept incredibly well in the lovely, large comfortable beds, in fact the last time we slept that well was on the Queen Mary, which takes some beating.

The farmhouse was very well appointed and equipped, and Diane was always on hand should anything be needed.

Would recommend without hesitation.

The only thing that I can think of to improve everything is an ice cream scoop (Only joking, a spoon is fine)

Thanks again for making our anniversary so memorable

It was a pleasure to meet you all and I certainly hope you'll come again soon - and bring those starry skies with you! Take care, Diana

A wonderful farmhouse cottage with amazing views

  • 5 of 5

The Lorton Valley is stunningly beautiful and you have full advantage to take it in from High Swinside. By day the views from the gardens can be enjoyed from the lawn or ample seating positioned around the gardens - benches, ding tables and chairs and also hammocks. By evening you can watch the sun set over the hills and Solway firth from the fantastic wood-fired hot tub.

The Farmhouse is very well equipped for a family or larger group; facilities for dining, relaxing and sleeping are versatile and of a good standard. We were a 3-generation family group of 8 all staying together in The Farmhouse property, ages 2-73 and we enjoyed it immensely. While being in quite a secluded spot, we enjoyed the peace and quiet of the valley though were able to easily access other more lively locations, such as Maryport, Whinfell, Keswick and Allonby beach.

The icing on the cake was our host, Diana. She delivers faultless hospitality, enthusiasm and a real passion the Lake District. In such a short time on the High Swinside site she has accomplished a great standard of accommodation, matched with real care for our enjoyment. Nothing was too much trouble and we were thrilled to have met her.

Must see places: Buttermere, Crummock Water, & Loweswater lakes all have stunning lake shore paths around them, and places where you can hire rowing boats or obtain fishing permits. The bluebells on Rannerdale Knotts are a 'must' in May (near Crummock Water) - and are legendary. The views from Scale Hill, Foulsyke, and Low Fell are some of the best in the Western Lakes. George Fox who founded the Quakers once preached to a crowd from under the 1000 year old yew tree in High Lorton. You can usually view ospreys on their nest in spring & summer from Whinlatter Visitors Centre (or ask about getting to the special viewing points). The centre of Cockermouth has lovely Georgian architecture and hosts a Georgian Fair every other year. Wordsworth;'s birthplace is also in Cockermouth (National Trust).
