La Bastide stands in 4.5 hectares of meadows and maquis in a peaceful wooded valley 10 minutes from the medieval village of Lautrec. Albi the capital of Tarn is 35 minutes away. The Tarn is an unspoiled area of Southern France and very convenient for holiday-makers using the low cost airlines flying to Toulouse, Carcassonne and Rodez.
Why choose the Tarn?
The Tarn is where the Mediterranean and Atlantic climates meet. Its equitable climate is drier than the Dordogne and not as fiercely hot as Provence. You will find far fewer English residents here than in the Dordogne. Stay in a Tarn gite and you’ll be living in a traditional corner of the South of France.
Experienced gite renters know the advantage of booking with owners who live nearby. We can deal with late arrivals, advise on doctors restaurants local services and activities, and respond promptly to any problems.

We are a family of five wanting to live the slower paced life of rural France. We love living in the peaceful countryside of the Tarn. The community here are welcoming and friendly. The children are speaking fluent french at the local schools with year groups of less than 30. Its a wonderful place to bring up a family.
Owner purchased this Barn in 2014
Why Owner chose Puycalvel
We bought La Bastide after spotting it for sale on the internet. We travelled over to visit and fell in love with the old stone buildings and the wonderful peaceful setting. The children love the pool, trampoline and play areas. The chance to run around a big mainly grassed area in freedom is fantastic for any energetic youngster. Surrounded by fields and with one entry and exit lane makes La Bastide a safe environment from cars and traffic.
What makes this Barn unique
The Grange and Farmhouse are fantastic stone buildings dating from 1610. Having maintained their rustic feel and atmosphere with exposed beams in the ceiling, lime rendered walls and exposed oak frames. The amenities are modern and luxurious. It's a delicate balance to achieve. The large terrace looking out over the pool and rolling hills is a wonderful place to sip a cold glass of local rosé wine before dinner. The Cottage is a cool and airy open plan living space with modern kitchen facilities. The bedroom windows open onto a lavender bed that wafts a wonderful scent through the room. The bathroom boasts a view of wonderful rolling hillsides, truly a loo with a view. The large pool is perfect for a refreshing dip between relaxing on a sun lounger with a book by your favourite author or watching the children swim and play.

A brilliant week
My family had a fantastic stay at the Grange. It is absolutely beautiful with period furniture and a fantastic kitchen (well equipped). The guests in the adjoining gite were absolutely lovely but we still felt that we had privacy. I have rented many holiday homes over the years and Janine and Steve are by far and away the most generous and welcoming hosts I have met - the welcome pack was so helpful and they are a wealth of information on the area. There are so many thoughtful touches that make this house superior, such as English TV (bonus for kids when it was super hot), a proper coffee machine and lovely towels. There is plenty to do and see, but it was just great to relax in such beautiful surroundings. The views are amazing. We will definitely return.
Thanks for a great review. It was a pleasure to welcome you and your family. We hope you all return to La Bastide in the future.
We stayed at puycalvel in the beautiful barn owned by Janine and Steve for 2 weeks. It was absoutely beautiful , peaceful and relaxing. We had our 2 teenage girls with us who were blissfully happy in the pool most of the time but when we dragged them away there was loads to do in the area. Lautrec is very local -one of the most beautiful villages in France and we fell In love with Albi 30 minutes away. Gorgeous town which we wandered in for ages visitning the Toulouse lautrec art gallery and cathedral. Had some fabulous meals out -particularly lovely meal on our last night under open skies in lautrec recommended by Janine and steves helpful information pack.
Janine and Steve were really friendly and helpful. We were invited to two "Aperro" evenings with delicious barbecue food and wine and good company. Janine was particularly helpful when I ran out of medication whilst away and she sorted it all out for me -very grateful for that.
Really recommend this lovely place for relaxation, cycling, kayaking on the river tarn, relaxing and general sightseeing. Thank you for our lovely stay.
Peaceful, relaxing, very family friendly stunning scenery & the gite is very well equipped
Janine & Steve were very welcoming & could not have done enough to make our family holiday. the gite was beautiful, spacious & had everything a family would need - a home from home. The area was stunning - the tree lined roads and everlasting sunflower fields reminded us of Tuscany. Although there are three Gites you could be completely private. The weather was amazing and we spent many days dipping in the heated 25% pool surrounded by the stunning views. In the day you could see and hear the buzzards and at night the you can watch the stars from your balcony. Thank you to our hosts who make everything possible - if you want to get away from every thing, relax , and spend time with your family this is the place.
Très agréable séjour en famille
Hôtes très sympathiques et disponibles. Cadre magnifique. Ce fut un séjour familial très agréable avec un côté english...en supplément !!
The local village of Lautrec boasts medieval houses, market square and windmill. Well worth a stroll around. Small market on Friday morning. Fantastic boulangerie open everyday but Saturday.
Castres is a big rugby town home to Castres Olympique (C.O.). There are also textile workshop houses on the Agout river that have survived since the middle ages. Castres has markets most days and a Producers Market Tuesday evenings in the Place Pierre Fabre to enjoy dinner cooked by local farmers.
Albi is renowned for its monolithic cathedral. It can be seen from miles around and has UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born in Albi, there is an art museum dedicated to him.
Cordes-sur-Ciel is a 'bastide' meaning fortified hill town. Voted 'Preferred Village' 2014 by the French it's a truly beautiful place.
Carcassonne is about an hour and a quarter away. The citadel has UNESCO World Heritage Site status and is an amazing ancient walled city with towers and turrets.
Revel has a great Saturday market under the medieval market hall, it's a picturesque town to wander through while munching fruit from the market.
Our nearest beaches are near Narbonne at about two hours. Gruissan plage has a whole neighbourhood of wooden houses on stilts, featured in the film 'Betty Blue' / '37,2 du Matin'.
If the coast is too far there is lake swimming and leisure activities on the Lac de Bancalié near Réalmont. Also near Mazamet there is the Lac de Montagnès with plenty of water sports and zip wire walks in the tree tops.
Ten minutes away is Aquaval a local water park with pools, water slides set in a pretty grassed park.
