About Andy Sanderson

My name is Andy Sanderson, I am English, a semi-retired Physics teacher and tutor. Having visited Portugal a number of times over the years I decided to buy a property here and renovate it as necessary to create a nice place where I could happily live myself, but also rent out when not there. At the moment I spend about half my time in the UK and half at the house.

Why Andy Sanderson chose Santa Comba Dão

I bought this property because of its size and the peaceful but not isolated location, near a large freshwater lake. Between the mountainous north where it can rain a lot in winter, and the flat Alentejo where it is too hot for me in summer, I think I found just the right climate. Also the property had a disused pool which seemed just right for renovation as an ecologically-friendly bio pool, and at the moment it's fully working and the reed-bed filter is settling down nicely. Freshwater swimming is much more pleasant than going in the sea or a chlorine-filled pool, I think. There is an additional annexe which can be used as a games room, with a table tennis table, and I intend to develop this further in future.

What makes this villa unique

The spacious nature of the house and gardens, the ecologically-friendly swimming pool, and the unusual annexe with 4-storey tower, together with the peaceful village location next to a town with all amenities... all of these combine to make the house a great place to stay. Friendly locals too, some of whom speak some English, and the immediate neighbours are fluent.

The upstairs shower room has a shower (with curtain), WC and wash basin - please try to avoid flooding the floor. The en-suite shower room in the ground floor bedroom has a shower (with cubicle), WC and wash basin. All showers have anti-slip mats.

  • All bedrooms contain a variety of furniture to help make your stay as comfortable as possible. Some have dressing tables with stools and mirrors, each bed space has a bedside cabinet, and all bedrooms have a chair, large and small wall mirrors, a 14-inch three-speed fan, and external wooden shutters for light and temperature control. Bedding in all bedrooms is sprung mattresses with fitted bottom sheet, luxury filled pillows, and a 4.5 tog summer duvet. Spare bedding and radiator central heating is available in case of cold weather. All windows are double-glazed. The four upstairs bedrooms share a shower/WC, the downstairs bedroom has an ensuite shower/WC, and everyone can use the large bathroom/shower/WC which is at the bottom of the stairs. All bedrooms have easy access to a nearby 6kg powder fire extinguisher. The downstairs bedroom has its own wardrobe, and the upstairs bedrooms have areas where clothes may be hung, just outside the door at each end of the landing.

The main things that will attract people to this property are the size of the house and garden, the large private bio-pool, the quiet yet not isolated village location with supermarkets and fuel and motorway and railway all less than five kilometres away, the friendly locals who see fewer tourists than elsewhere in Portugal, and the excellent climate. As a place to live, I love it myself, so I am sure that other visitors will.
