About Lesley Houareau
We are Lesley & Felix Houareau. We have worked in customer facing roles for all of our working life and really enjoy hosting guests at our gites. We live in a village outside Bath and feel privileged to live in a beautiful part of south west England as well as being able to spend time in the Charente Maritime
Lesley Houareau purchased this Barn in 2004
Why Lesley Houareau chose Saint-Palais-de-Phiolin
We wanted to be based in a part of France that was within half a day's journey from the ferry ports but is a sunny and warm part of France. The Charente Maritime fits the bill. We are 30 min from the beach but located in a very peaceful hamlet where our French neighbours have welcomed us into the community. Since the introduction of low cost airlines, flying to Bordeaux or La Rochelle makes a quicker journey with comparable or less expensive costs than by ferry. We are in wine and cognac producing country where you can visit and buy direct from the producers; the surrounding towns and villages are steeped in roman and medieval history and architecture; for culture we have the towns of Saintes, Cognac, La Rochelle and Bordeaux nearby; and many very good local restaurants close by, some with Michelin stars but all less expensive than in the coastal towns. What more could you want from a holiday in France?
What makes this Barn unique
We are rural but not remote. Our hamlet is very peaceful but only 2 kms from the nearest town with a small market (we like to buy our oysters there on a Sunday), Carrefour Express, bank, 3 boulangeries, butcher and restaurants, and 10 minutes from the nearest motorway. With 470km of beaches in the Charente Maritime we have plenty of choice!
100% refund for cancellations more than 60 days before check-in date.
L'Etable - incredibly well-equipped and spacious.
We recently stayed for a week and thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful L'Etable, which was incredibly well-equipped and spacious.
Its in a quiet and picturesque hamlet, but only 10 minutes from the nearest town and lovely local restaurants, we definitely did not run out of things to do. Saint-Emilion and Bordeaux are also only an hours drive away and were definitely worth the short journey, especially if you are a wine lover!!
We will definitely be highly recommending L'Etable and can't wait to return!
Thank you so much to Lesley and Felix for being so helpful!
The perfect getaway
Spent a long weekend with a bunch of friends and enjoyed our stay immensely. The whole complex fit 13-15 of us perfectly but stayed in the main farmhouse. It's a home away from home and is equipped for indoor and outdoor dining! It's in a tiny hamlet an hour away from Bordeaux. It's rural setting was the perfect place to get away from it all as we live in a big city. The hosts have a games barn with bicycles to cycle to the nearest boulangerie/cafe/restaurants and of course to explore the countryside. Discovered a great little farmers market in the nearest village called St Genis where the older generation still pay by cheque! If you don't want to cook there is also a great local restaurant nearby who caters for any dietary needs if you book in advance. I am definitely returning to La fermette! Thanks for having us!
The farmhouse is an ideal social space when you rent more than one of the gites. We're pleased you had a good time and took advantage of the bikes to explore the countryside and to zip into St Genis for supplies.
Authentic experience of rural France
The location is perfect as not only does it provide an authentic experience of rural France, but it is also within a short drive of the coast, Bordeaux, vineyards and historical towns. It is the perfect location to relax, with its beautiful surrounding countryside and/or to use as a base to explore this region of France. The local village is within walking distance and the local supermarket is within a 5 minute drive. The gite is very comfortable and has all the mod cons you'd need whilst also retaining its authentic feel. Check in and out was also very easy and flexible and the hosts were easy to contact. There is also ample car parking space. I would love to come back here again!!
Pleased you all enjoyed your stay. We are lucky to be in such a peaceful and relaxing hamlet yet so close to some beautiful towns (and the beach). See you again soon.
Good rural location
Property good for two of us. Small sitting area amongst the shrubs and lavender attracting the bees and butterflies.
So pleased that you enjoyed L'Etable. The garden is a real sun trap
We had a wonderful time at the gite, it was ideal for our 4 days on the beach. The location was great for cycling with the children, flat and quiet roads. The gite is beautifully clean and well maintained, we would definitely stay again for a stop over'
We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay at L'Etable and that you were able to make good use of the bikes in the games barn! We look forward to hosting you again.
Absolutely fabulous. Very clean and superbly well equipped for little ones - it made our holiday so much easier with all the kiddy kit provided. It was so relaxing jut to sit in the garden when the children were in bed and enjoy the peace and quiet. We'll definitely return.
Thanks for your kind comments. We have tried to make L'Etable as baby and toddler friendly as we can to give you a stress free holiday so we're pleased you found all the 'kit' useful.
We are based in a small farming hamlet surrounded by fields of sunflowers, wheat and vines - peaceful but not remote as we are only 2 mins drive from the nearest small town of St Genis de Saintonge with shops and bank. The nearest supermarket in 10 minutes away in the pretty medieval town of Pons. If you enjoy cooking there are numerous markets close for you to buy the local produce.....and if you don't then we have many good local restaurants locally including several with michelin stars.
For relaxation there is the beach, or rather beaches, as the Charente Maritime has over 470kms of coastline. And for culture there is Bordeaux, La Rochelle and Cognac.......and as this is wine country you can visit local producers and try before you buy. What more could you want from a holiday?
