About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 7 (8 with a fold-down)

This is a beautiful stone built semi-detached house. Around 200 years old in the village of Azillanet. There's a large garden (400m2), private swimming pool (8m x 4m), stone terrace and dining area and a spectacular old fig tree with a swing. The garden is south facing, so catches the sun throughout the day. The property has been sympathetically restored and tastefully furnished, retaining its original burnished oak floors and beamed ceilings. 3 large bedrooms, (one a delight for children, with ladder-staircase & under-eaves sleeping), a bathroom and a superb open landing area are upstairs. Downstairs there's another bathroom (a new shower room), a new fully equiped kitchen and a generous living-dining space. Beautiful views of the village and countryside can be seen from the garden and all upstairs rooms.

The village boulangerie, two wine caves and a local restaurant are a few minutes stroll. Please see the village website to get an idea of the village:-http://www.mairieazillanet.net/index.php/galerie-d-images

It's great to cycle through the vineyards surrounding the village. Walking and hiking trails also surround the village. Lake swimming (Lac Jouarres) is 10 min drive away, fantastic river swimming is within a 20 min drive (Agel). A supermarket, banks, cafes and other shops are only 5 minutes away in Olonzac. The fabulous Cathar village of Minerve is the next village, just over 3km away and the Unesco world heritage site of the Canal du Midi is about 5km away. The beaches of the Mediterranean are about a 35 minute drive and the old walled city of Carcassonne is a 25 minute drive. The nearest airports are Carcassonne and Beziers (40 minutes), Perpignan (1hr), Montpellier (1hr 15min) and Toulouse (1hr 45min).

Really lovely house

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful house, big and airy (rooms bigger than look in pics) but very comfortable and homely. Plenty of space for us (two adults, three big kids) to be together as a family or separate if space needed. Pool was absolutely fabulous (thank you Olivier) and sitting outside between the house and the pool of an evening was a treat. Boys loved the swing under the big old fig tree. Area is very pretty, all medieval Cathar villages and vineyards. Supermarkets etc all nearby, baker who delivers to the house each day. Wifi not particularly great (on border of 2g/3g) but otherwise cannot fault the place. Our best French holiday (and we've been doing them for nearly a decade now). (PS Thank you for the extra fans, Suzanne, worked a treat). Tony, Michelle and Boys

Lovely house and pool

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week in this lovely part of France. The house was lovely, nicely furnished with everything you need for an enjoyable holiday. The information provided was really helpful with lots of advice on what to do in the area. The weather was hot and sunny all week so the children spent most of the time in the salt water pool which was so refreshing. We visited Carcassonne, Minerve, the lake and the Canal du Midi at Homps. There is so much to do a week is not long enough! A very relaxing stay overall!

Beautiful House In The Heart Of The Minervois

  • 5 of 5

We spent 2 wonderful weeks in this beautiful house in the heart of the Minervois. Upon arrival the property was very clean and well maintained. The rooms were spacious and well furnished with comfy furniture and a well equipped kitchen. We loved the garden with the large fig tree and spent a lot of time outdoors during our stay - a dip in the pool was a must on the long hot sunny days and the garden furniture was good quality and very comfy.

The owner was very friendly and helpful and made arranging our holiday very easy. She provided excellent directions to the property which we found easily - we didn't get lost once!

This is an ideal place for a peaceful, relaxing holiday surrounded by vineyards and sleepy, quaint villages. We loved it!

We are definitely returning next year for more of the same!!!!

Great relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time at the property, the rooms were big and spacious and kitchen had everything you could need. The pool is a great size and the kids loved it! Azillanet itself doesn't have much going on, but that's part of the charm, and places like Carcassonne are easily accessible by car.A great week relaxing week!

We loved this house!

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely house in a quiet and peaceful village. It is clean, well-maintained and very well laid out - we particularly liked the open plan ground floor - and fitted with some of the best quality furnishings and bedding that we have come across in many years of renting houses in France. It felt very spacious for the six of us. The garden is also lovely. The table is ideal for eating out under the shade of the fig tree, and close to the house too - no trekking miles with plates and food! The pool is fantastic, with top quality loungers, and we enjoyed many hours around it due to the fabulous weather.

The house is well placed for local attractions. Olonzac market is a must (with perhaps a drink or lunch at Restaurant Oportailo afterwards!), Carcassonne and wine tasting at the local caves also well worth doing.

We found the owner to be friendly and helpful, too.

Would recommend this house, and we will definitely be returning in a couple of years.

Relaxing Week in Minervois

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, our 11- and 13-year-old children, and my parents all enjoyed our week in the heart of Minervois. The house is indeed lovely and otherwise as described. We especially liked the pool and garden and spent most of our time outside, breakfasting and dining poolside everyday.

The house is very attractively restored, with tasteful and comfortable furnishings. It has functional modern conveniences, including a new kitchen, and was clean and well maintained. We used the first-floor bathroom with shower instead of the other because the other has a transparent door and also an old-fashioned though charming tub.

The caretakers live on the other side of this duplex and are very friendly and helpful. They made suggestions on what to do and see and what to avoid, recommended restaurants, and even provided tips on avoiding traffic. They were always available when we needed a minor repair or some advice.

I would recommend this property to families, with or without children, who are looking for a stay in a typical Minervois village with proximity to interesting sites.

The nearby sites that we enjoyed most were the historically significant and scenic village of Minerve; Aigne, a village built as a "circulade"; and an interesting tour of a nearby olive oil cooperative. All of these were within 15 minutes of the house. A little further, perhaps 35 minutes, is Carcassonne, the popular medieval fortress. We also enjoyed seeing the village of Lagrasse and Fontfroide Abbey.

Azillanet is a charming unspoiled village with cobbled streets and original wash-houses. It has wine 'caves', a village shop which stocks everything, (fresh bread delivered daily, meat and poultry available to order), and a local 'Ferme Auberge' with outside dining amongst fruit trees, & typical menus at very reasonable prices. Children's play area 2 mins from the house. The village is situated in the foothills of the Montagne Noir, ideally placed between plain & mountains, with walking, hiking, cycling to suit all. We enjoy gentle bike-riding through the wine villages, passing between vineyards and olive groves... But if you fancy something more strenuous..The spectacular Cathar village of Minerve ('Un des Plus Beaux Villages de France'), straddling its 2 river gorges, is 4kms away - & many other attractive villages nearby. Olonzac is 3.5 km away with supermarkets & all facilities, as well as a great weekly market. The Canal du Midi is 10mins away. Lake & river swimming mins away.

Other Activities: canoeing, kayaking
