Overview

About the property

Lovely renovated 3 bedroom, 2 Bath home directly on the water

Nothing compares to being close and yet feeling so far away. Enjoy the escape to Candlewood Lake. The Lakehouse on Spur is nestled in a small lake community with direct water access on a rare no-wake-zone stretch of Candlewood where you can enjoy peace and quiet. It has its own private dock to moor your own boat. Powerboats putter-by, waving hello. No loud jetskis or waterskiing to wake you in the morning or disturb your afternoon reading or fishing. If you are an antique lover, you are close to several nearby towns offering plentiful antique shops and 'picker's' paradise thrift shops and flea markets. New England's largest outdoor flea market, The Elephant Trunk is a 15 minute drive and open in the summer. Epic Summertime County fairs, farmer's markets, farm stands and farm to table dining make country living or visiting ideal. Hiking, biking and all manner of water sports are available for you to choose. Nearby Marinas rent powerboats, etc. The owners provide optional rental Kayaks, a Sunfish sailboat and a 4 person pedal-boat to make your way across the lake to the town beach to meet the ice cream truck, have your kids play at the playground or to listen to music performed at the town's pavilion. The house has a large private dock for afternoon drinks, dining, fishing, swimming, with plenty of space to dock watercraft. There is a firepit by the water to relax and enjoy a book and drinks in the evening. Homebody guests can enjoy books, DVDs and boardgames for all ages. Winter provides other fun outdoor activities. Skiing is nearby.

All the comforts of home await your arrival in a lovingly furnished 3 bedroom 2 bath cottage. There is an outside area for barbecuing, deck or patios for dining, sunbathing and taking in the views. The 1000 sf home offers a large living, kitchen and dining area. The unique, handmade walnut dining table seats 6 comfortably. The kitchen island has three counter height chairs for additional dining space and for hanging out chatting with the chef (if you love cooking!) It's ideal for parents to feed hungry children after a full day of swimming, skiing or exploring the region. The kitchen is fully equipped for entertaining. The Master bedroom has a Queen-sized bed, TV and views of the lake. The gracefully appointed Guest room has a full size bed. The children's room also boasts a view of the lake and sleeps 3 (a bunk bed and trundle for 3rd child or friend). A modern touch inspired the newly renovated bathroom with a deep tub/shower combination. Ample linens and towels provided. (Beach towels too!) In the hall, a cubby was designed for you to keep your shoes and hang your coats. The unfinished basement offers a bonus full bathroom with a shower for those times you need the extra space. Dogs are considered on a case by case basis, with an additional fee. The home is professionally cleaned between visitors and housecleaning is available for longer visitors. We limit the overnight guests to 6 individuals.

About Jane Wieder

We are a family of 4, transplanted from New York City, lured by the beautiful countryside and lifestyle of Sherman. We owned a vacation home in Sherman for 15 years before ultimately calling it home. We purchased this vacation rental to share our love of the area with friends and renters who want to discover why we love the area so much. We live nearby and can offer customized recommendations to meet your preferences and hopes for a memorable vacation.

Jane Wieder purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Jane Wieder chose Candlewood Lake

We bought this vacation rental property because of its ideal location both on the lake and in the town of Sherman. It is close by so we can help renters as needed. It is situated nicely on the property with views of the lake and close proximity to town.

What makes this cottage unique

It is all about the view, the beautiful relaxing interior space and being on the water. Bar none, people approach with appreciation for the location, the charm and the peace and serenity.

Lakeside Heaven

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at The Lake House was more than wonderful from the minute we arrived to the minute we (reluctantly) left. The house more than exceeded our expectations. Every need was met before you even knew you needed it! It was light, bright, clean, comfortable and certainly well equipped - you name it, it was there - seriously!

The setting was peaceful and serene and the private dock made being by the water so easy. We rented kayaks and paddle boards, so each day spent time in and on the water, even taking the opportunity to fish (Yes, we did catch a big one, and no, it didn't get away! But we did put it back to swim another day!). That was what taking a Lakeside vacation was all about for us as a family.

Jane and David were very helpful and courteous both before our vacation began and during, even coming out on a Sunday to sort out the Internet for us - thank you!!!

We will be back at The Lake House for sure. When the next lake side vacation beckons, this is exactly the place we would want to be - The Lake House at Spur Lane on Candlewood Lake, Sherman, CT.

Great house right on the lake

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our weekend at this house. Well located and it was nice to sit and relax on the lounge chairs on the dock. We would definitely want to stay here again.

Charming, Clean, Perfectly equipped, Relaxing, Wonderful

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time at your house @ Spur. The house was so perfectly appointed with everything from comfortable furniture, bedding, appliances, BBQ Grill, HVAC, to all the “little details” like labels on switches and cabinet doors, well stocked kitchen and spare tooth brushes/ q tips/ baby oil/ etc. etc. There was nothing that was lacking. The lake was perfect and the dock was fine for my boat. Evening sunset & moonlight cruises along with enjoying the 80-90 degree days were great. Had dockside fires in the fire pit 3 nights as a relaxing way to end the day. Music & entertainment systems were all good ( had to get new batteries for MBR Ruku remote and one of the many flashlights ) We only used one of the 3 bedrooms but all were great. We were impressed that you even had a stroller and carry crib available in the kids room. 3 barking dogs at the neighbor’s to the south were a bit annoying at times but we managed. Not sure why you have a damage deposit AND a mandatory Insurance policy. I would prefer a larger deposit, and not be surprised with the policy at the booking stage. I hope you have not had a bad experience in the past that prompted same. You have such a beautiful house. Overall the rental experience was first rate that I would highly recommend.

Not recommended to anyone, if you need privacy, this is not the place to go, you are under property owners supervision, I felt like I Am back to boarding school, water is about 700 ft deep from the house through steep stairs .

Owner's Response: I am not surprised our guest had the worst vacation ever. Nearly all of our guests never meet or see us, as we prefer to give our guests the feeling of being in their own home. However, I was woken by a neighbor at 2:30 am on their first night. My neighbor explained that they would call the police if my guests continued singing loudly on the dock. Prior to arrival, our guest received our house rules letting him know our maximum guest limit and that noise must be kept to a minimum in the evenings and mornings as sound carries along the water. When we texted and called, our guest told me they had gone inside when I could clearly hear from my home (4 houses away along the water) that they were not inside. The guests were told to leave in the morning. After begging to stay and promising to respect our neighbors, we agreed to allow them to stay. This was a mistake. The following night returning from picking up our son at a high school dance at nearly midnight, we passed the house and discovered there were 15 middle-aged men at the house, seven or eight outside. We live in a small community with close neighbors and noise carries. They showed no respect for our community, the house rules, or our guest limit 7. This was by far the worst experience I have ever had as a VRBO host. We have had countless guests respect our home and community. No one has ever blatantly lied and disregarded our house rules like this group. This is not the house for a large group of middle-age men to re-live their youth. And yes, We expect our guests to respect our neighbors. VRBO is not a place to rent homes recklessly and act like children.

An outstanding restful relaxing oasis

  • 5 of 5

We came to the lake house before dropping off our children at boarding school and were able to end the summer on a high note. The house is well equipped clean organized and spacious. We felt at home. The location was great for Boating on Lake Candlewood and close to anything we needed from groceries to National Parks and exploring. Thank you Jane for your hospitality.

Charming lakefront cottage

  • 5 of 5

Recently remodeled lakefront cottage right on the lake. The two queen beds were comfortable, and there is an additional twin bunk bed room. The living room had many board games, puzzles, and a Wii for the day we were rained out, which is was great. The dock had loungers, the yard had a firepit and chairs, and a hammock.

The basement is unfinished but had a second finished bathroom and laundry facilities. This is where they store life vests, kayaks, extra chairs, etc.

Directly across this finger of the lake is a sandy beach and beach club. There's also a boat launch and mooring. Despite all that, we still found it to be a pretty quiet and peaceful area on the lake.

Only potential downside is that it is a lot of steep stairs from the house to the yard/lake, so if you have anyone with mobility issues, it would be difficult. Otherwise, it's a wonderful retreat!

Owner's Response: Dear Marnie, thank you so much for your review. When I travel, this is exactly the type of review I want to read. It is better reading all the details from a guest perspective than any list or description an owner can provide. Thanks!! Please come back any time!
