Overview

About the property

Double fronted 4 bed house with bay windows in the heart of Penzance + COW!

Myrtle House is a beautifully restored double fronted Georgian house with large bay windows, accommodating up to 8 guests over 5 floors, available to book for a minimum of 3 or 4 nights. This former merchant’s house retains all its period charm but now also comes furnished and decorated with a mix of antique, vintage and contemporary furniture making it quirky, luxurious and stylish. There is a large kitchen with a Lacanche range cooker, central island, bespoke cabinetry, honed slate work tops, lots of quality pots and pans, gadgets including a Kitchenaid and pretty crockery. The table and chairs in the bay window mean you can eat overlooking the garden or socialise whilst you cook. In the alcoves are displays of glassware, cook books and a collection of gorgeous Leach pottery. Down from here in the basement is a very useful roomy utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer, iron, space for hanging clothes, etc. Next to the kitchen on the ground floor is a separate formal dining room with a funky mid century G-Plan dining suite seating up to 10 people, tall glass candlesticks and a sideboard kitted out with glasses for those special drinks and tableware and vintage afternoon tea china. Or if you prefer, there is a patio dining table and chairs in the sunny front garden, that you only have to share with Myrtle the cow and the sound of birdsong from Morrab Gardens. Myrtle's sheltered sun trap garden contains a patio area and a sea shingle garden with a selection of mature plants and shrubs and new plantings. Back in the house, leading up the stairs, are books and artefacts in alcoves that make this holiday home stand out from spartan rentals, as it really portrays the individuality and taste of the owners. On the first floor is the large elegant sitting room spanning the depth of the house, with a marble Georgian working fireplace, flatscreen smart TV, DVD, bluetooth speakers, a collection of DVDs and CDs, artwork by Amanda Slade and a gorgeous long window seat in the bay overlooking Morrab Gardens and the sea. Next to this is the French Bedroom, with a hand carved weathered oak linen double bed and large bay window, period fireplace and comfy armchair - all decorated in calming natural shades and painted in Farrow & Ball’s Skimming Stone. The French Room has an en suite shower room with rain head shower. Up to the second floor is the beautiful Master Bedroom with a gorgeous black lacquered four poster kingsize bed, Glaswegian Designer’s Timorous Beasties wallpaper, bay window with Georgian antiques for sitting back and enjoying the sea and garden views. Black and cream shades complement the bedroom in the en suite bathroom boasting a walk in shower with rain and hand attachment and a wonderful double ended bateau bath, perfect for a long soak. On the same floor is the Blue bedroom decorated in seaside blue hues with a pretty iron bedstead, cool Kartell Fly lampshade, views over pretty Morrab Gardens and the sea, Sanderson’s Dandelion Clocks prints and with an en suite shower room with rain head shower. Up the stairs to the top floor is the Loft with a study area containing a desk, books and Bose docking station. A separate bedroom has an en suite shower room into the sloping ceiling, internet TV and DVD, armchair, rocking chair and two day beds that can convert to two single beds or one double. Watch your head up here in the eaves but don’t miss out on the stunning views out of the windows towards Newlyn and Mousehole and in the other direction going all the way down towards The Lizard.

Why Claire Bowles chose Penzance

Myrtle House really has the most delightful feeling as soon as you enter. The location opposite the sub tropical Morrab Gardens with the sea views from the bay windows is fabulous. It's just under a minute's walk to the Penzance seafront prom and the Art Deco Jubilee Pool. From here there are simply stunning views of St Michael's Mount and the whole of Mounts Bay - spanning from Mousehole all the way round the coast to The Lizard. Its a perfect spot to explore the whole of this area of Cornwall.

Two trips to Myrtle House

  • 5 of 5

Myrtle House is a dream of a place to stay. We had fun choosing from the big bedrooms, all with their great views, and it was so lovely to be able to gather together in the homely big kitchen each morning for breakfast with the sun streaming in through the window. Great location too- set on a lovely street opposite the park/gardens so it is incredibly quiet yet is in spitting distance for the main shopping streets (wine shops!) and the seafront. You must have a look through the DVD collection in the living room. Very eclectic and we did not get to watch all that we had chosen for the "must watch" list. Did not watch any ordinary TV at all in the end remembering back...

The owners have really gone to town to ensure guests have everything you need for your stay - and more.

Decided we had to return to Penzance again, and it was just like coming home on the second visit (if only home was like Myrtle house but won't go into details).

Oh - also on the second time we had no car and really enjoyed the seashore walks to Mousehole and St Michael's Mount all the more for it. St Ives is only a short rail trip away too. Penzance is a great place to visit and Myrtle House is a wonderful place to stay.

Thanks for two fantastic stays in Penzance at Myrtle House and hope to be able to return again very soon.

Hugs and kisses to Myrtle herself.

Fantastic, spacious, classy Cornish holiday pad

  • 5 of 5

Myrtle House is utterly gorgeous. Really calming, spotless, beautifully designed, loads of room for spreading out, perfect for family meals or a spot of entertaining and a great TV room. The bedrooms are really comfortable with really beautiful light making them a wonderful space to relax. Each bedroom has its own ensuite and even the products they supply are gorgeous. I had an absolutely wonderful stay here and would recommend it to anyone. Seconds from all the fab restaurants - really close to the sea. But enough removed from the hustle and bustle to be a lovely peaceful haven for an absolute cracking holiday home. I will definitely be returning.

A beautiful house

  • 5 of 5

We had the most amazing holiday at Myrtle House. Not only it is tastefully decorated but also very quiet as it overlooks the beautiful Morrab Gardens and the sea. Penzance is a busting seaside town with lots to do and great places to eat.

Car: not necessary

Myrtle House is located opposite the beautiful sub tropical Morrab Gardens in the heart of Penzance. As well as the gardens, there are breathtaking views of the sea and the neighbouring fishing villages of Newlyn and Mousehole out in Mounts Bay. Just a minutes walk away is the Penzance seafront promenade and the wonderfully restored Art Deco Jubilee Pool. From here there are stunning views of St Michaels Mount and the whole of Mounts Bay, spanning from Mousehole, Newlyn, Penzance Harbour, Marazion and reaching down to the southernmost point of The Lizard. Walking through Morrab Gardens you can reach Penlee Park which has a playground, Penzance Tennis Club and Penlee House Museum and Gallery. Myrtle House is located in a quiet terrace with hardly any through traffic so often all you hear is the birds in Morrab Gardens. However, you are under a minute's walk away from historic Chapel Street, which has lots of independent boutiques, book shops, pubs, restaurants and galleries - and the rest of the town spreads out from here. The nearest cafe to the house, just at the top of the road, is The Honey Pot which serves delicious homemade lunches and snacks and a cake selection you simply must try, but its so busy sometimes you have to book! Just off Chapel Street there is the Exchange Gallery which showcases contemporary art in conjunction with Newlyn Art Gallery a 20 minute walk along the promenade. There are further playgrounds for children along this walk with sandy floors and glorious sea views for you while the little ones play. If you need refreshments on the way most clement days The Little Wonder Café is on the prom – an old retro caravan serving homemade cakes with vintage crockery. There are many other eateries and if you've read The Independent recently you would have seen an article tipping Penzance as they new foodie hotspot in Cornwall - try The Shore in Alverton Street, just across Morrab Gardens. Penzance is the ideal location from which to explore many scenic nearby places including St Michael's Mount, Mousehole, Porthcurno and the Minack Theatre, Lands End and St Ives.
