Villa Graziella is found close to the town of Monterosso in Liguria on “The Italian Riviera”. The secluded villa, which dates back to the thirteenth century, is located on a hill overlooking vineyards and orchards with a spectacular view of the hills, the town and the sea beyond.
Villa Graziella began as a monastery attached to a church and may have been a reconstruction of an even older building on the site. It has been renovated many times over the centuries and its history is evident in the graceful vaulted ceilings, thick walls, deep set arched windows and covered courtyard.
The villa is three kilometers from Monterosso, the largest of the five coastal villages west of Genoa known as the Cinque Terre. The village is stunningly picturesque, perched on hills that are rife with vineyards and olive groves. The town has a gorgeous long sandy beach along a rugged coastline of cliffs and rocks and bright glass-clear water.
There are two sides to Monterosso. The newer part of town is lively with excellent restaurants. The old town is full of history and atmosphere with winding, narrow medieval streets and terraced houses in shades of pinks and beiges. The ruins of a castle, The Church of San Giovanni Battista that dates back to the 1200s, the statue of a giant representing the god Neptune and San Francesco Church containing a Crucifixion by Van Dyck all add to the interest and ageless beauty of the old town.
Ligurian cuisine is said to be some of the most sophisticated in Italy, a country where food is almost a religion. Fresh fish from the abundant sea, local peaches, asparagus, artichokes, tomatoes and of course pesto, which was first created here, all feature in the gastronomy.
Liguria has much to explore, taste and enjoy and Villa Graziella reflects the old culture, graciousness and comfortable ambience of the region.
The villa is divided into two separate wings that are joined by a covered courtyard. Close to the entrance of the villa in the main wing is a smaller living room with comfortable chairs and a fireplace. Just beyond this living space is the kitchen. With its antique side board, wooden cabinetry and harvest table it has welcoming country feel but is fully equipped with professional quality appliances.
Downstairs is a larger living room with vaulted ceilings and overstuffed furniture in an intimate conversational grouping. This floor also houses a spacious dining room.
The grounds outside the villa are every bit as captivating as the interior. Lawns slope past and below the brow of a hill which frames a magnificent view of the surrounding hills, the town and the sea. Stone walkways lead past olive trees. Sun beds area are scattered on the lawn. A stone paved terrace invites quiet conversation, sunning, or basking in the panoramic view. A table shaded by olive trees adjacent to the house makes for pleasant al fresco dining. A swimming pool protected by a stone wall and surrounded by a stone offers a refreshing dip. Beyond the pool, further down the hill is a small vineyard. As a whole the grounds are private, relaxing and a treat for the senses.
There are six bedrooms in the villa. Bedroom one is located in the main wing of the building and contains a queen size bed and private bathroom. Bedroom two with a double bed and private bath with shower can be found by passing through the covered courtyard. Bedrooms three and four both contain double beds and a private bathroom and are located downstairs in the main wing of the house. Bedroom five is located up a small staircase off the covered courtyard and has a queen size bed. The sixth bedroom can be found up the same small staircase and contains a double bed and has a private bath with a shower. In the small living room area that leads to bedroom six is a sofa bed that can be used for extra sleeping accommodation or for two children.
Villa Graziella is an extraordinary property with an ancient history and truly breathtaking views of the stunning countryside and sea. Private and relaxing it’s an oasis of calm perfect for a rejuvenating vacation… or as a home base to explore the remarkable region of Liguria.
