About Mike & Belinda Powell

We purchased Cider House in 2008 as our 'bolt hole' from the rat race & we found an idyllic special place that restores mind and body.

It could be said that it's in the middle of nowhere, OR in the middle of everywhere as it is in between Dartmouth, Totnes and Kingsbridge.

We are now retired (early) and can spend more time at Cider House and of course spend more time travelling further afield, we can therefore share our lovely home.

Charming cottage accommodation

  • 4 of 5

The Cider House is a charming and welcoming cottage. Prettily decorated and well equipped, it is like staying at a friend’s home. Well situated for Totnes/Dartmouth/Kingsbridge but some roads can be very narrow so caution needed. The wood burner makes for cosy evenings, after relaxing in the beautiful claw bath under vaulted beamed ceiling. Peaceful, rural location.

Wonderful cosy hideaway

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful cottage this is, so comfortable, full of every home comfort and very well equipped. We didn't want to leave after our 4 night stay. It was the perfect base for our annual trip to Devon to revisit old stomping grounds and meet up with old friends. The beds are amazingly comfortable, the living room is perfect for a blowy autumn evening in front of the wood burner and the kitchen has every bit of equipment you would ever need. It is situated down perfect winding Devon lanes and the peace and quiet is a huge bonus.

Mike and Belinda were fantastic at replying quickly to queries and we are very jealous of their amazing cottage. It is top of the list of places to revisit.

Can only highly recommend the Cider House, there were no negatives.

Lovely, cosy & comfortable place to stay. Good location for exploring Devon as long as you don't mind the narrow lanes!

A good holiday cottage

  • 4 of 5

We found it comfortable and well equipped. We particularly appreciated the Sky sports package. The only downside was the driving through single track Devon lanes to get there.

We had excellent meals in Taylor's in Dartmouth and the Laughing Monk in Strete.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, my husband insists on Sky Sport - me not so much! Ah the Devon lanes, in full bloom & bushy'ness at this time of the year - but very beautiful. Very pleased you had a good stay at Cider House, and enjoyed the local restaurants. Belinda Powell

Places to go: Ciderhouse is ideally located to enable you to explore the South Hams.

Dartmouth - nice small town, good shops and river views. Great walk (or ferry ride) to the Castle.

Visit “Alfresco” for a great breakfast (all day) with atmosphere. Castle Hotel for a good lunch. Dartmouth has a M&S food and a Co-op, on the outskirts you will find a Sainsbury’s (home delivery available from Sainsbury’s online).

Dartmouth Golf Club is on road from Dartmouth to Totnes, as is the childrens play park “Woodlands”

Totnes - noted for its “independent shops” and “quirkiness”. Good for local markets, and a stroll up the high street. Large Morrison’s supermarket.

Dartington – Just outside of Totnes - Cider Press centre – good shops for “stuff you don’t need” on a rainy day. Also visit Dartington Hall and National Trust High Cross House.

Kingsbridge - a market town situated in the district of South Hams , Kingsbridge is said to be an outstanding place with abundant natural beauty, regular farmers markets. Tesco and Morrison’s supermarkets.

Salcombe - A number of lovely beaches, shops, restaurants, pubs and café’s. – very Chelsea on-sea. In Salcombe visit North Sands for refreshment at the Winking Prawn . South Sands for the South Sands Hotel (bookable on their web site). Very lovely walk from Overbecks to Bolt Head and beyond.

East Portlemouth is on the other side of estuary from Salcombe with a lovely (National Trust beach) at Mill Bay. We like to park at Gara Rock, walk round coast to East Portlemouth and take passenger ferry over to Salcombe for a beer and browse.

Beaches - Slapton Sands, turn right out of Middle Hutcherleigh, follow lane to end then turn left and keep going (5 (Devon) mile lane). This will bring you to Slapton and Torcross – visit the beaches that were used for military practice in 2nd World War. Walk over the headland to Beesands and Hall Sands (where the village was lost to the sea). Good pub (Cricketers) at Beesands, also a fish shack for refreshments (Britannia), meals and fresh fish. Small church hall often also open for tea’s and cakes.
