What makes this cabin unique

The rustic cabin lies at the end of a two track (1600 Conglomerate Falls Lane) more than 1/2 mile off a gravel county road (Tanskanen Road). Find peace and tranquility in the North Woods, surrounded by white pine, maple, birch, and fir. The river is just a short walk away, with beautiful views of the famous fishing hole, Conglomerate Hole, and the upper falls. Dogs are welcome and will have the time of their lives! This is a special place anytime of year. In winter you will park on the county road, and ski or snowshoe 1/2 mile into the cabin. In spring/summer/fall, drive up access makes it easy. In warmer months, bathe using the rain barrel water or jump in the river or Lake Superior! Or ask about shower availability at the Ahmeek Streetcar Station.

Wonderfully secluded

  • 5 of 5

Great cabin! Comfortable king sized bed with a pretty comforter. Had no problem accessing the road with my Honda Fit. The only thing that was weird, and it is no reflection on the cabin, but a heads up... when we pulled into the property there was a truck parked at the turn around , by the port a potty. We thought that was odd. But I think that locals come down this road to access the path down to the river/falls. It just took us by surprise is all. Outside of that everything else was wonderful. It was like glamping at its finest.

Perfect Secluded Cabin in the Woods

  • 5 of 5

Take the owner's advice: get a vehicle high off the ground with four wheel drive. My rental car fell through and I decided to risk taking my Nissan Sentra. Nearly bottomed out, and had to rush out a little early because of strong rains (didn't want to get stuck in the mud) but other than that the cabin was clean and airy. Extra comfy king sized bed. Gorgeous property. Close walk down to the Gratiot River with an amazing ridge top view of the river and falls. Couldn't be happier with my experience. Exactly what you need when you want to get away from it all!

Owner's Response: Currently we are recommending a higher clearance vehicle on the Cabin access road; however the road will be graded (and the vegetation trimmed along the sides) this summer. Glad you enjoyed the Cabin and surrounds ! The king bed was a recent donation:).

Rustic, to a fault

  • 3 of 5

I really wanted to enjoy my stay here but a few things kind of let me down. One, I couldn't actually book a shower at the Ahmeek station because the room there was booked. That wasn't mentioned anywhere when I booked the cabin. 2nd, the road to the cabin was rough, but that was OK. The thing that bothered me was how overgrown all the trees were on the trail, scraping down the side of the car for a 1/4 mile. They need some major pruning. Finally, my biggest gripe was that the place was just due for some general maintenance.

First, I had to reinstall the screen mesh on the screen door before I could use it (luckily there was a screen installation tool inside), 2nd, only 1 LED light worked inside (all of the fluorescents were either broken or missing), and 3rd, the screen door is rusted out and I actually cut my knuckle on some sharp metal while moving out.

Other than that, the cabin was very charming, and the surrounding forest and river very scenic. And it was a great location to do some exploring near Cliff, Calumet, and Gay, Michigan.

I just wish the cabin (and road) had a bit more basic maintenance in order to make the trip more enjoyable.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. We are glad you enjoyed the Cabin location; it is truly unique in the Keweenaw. The access road vegetation will be trimmed and the road surface graded this summer, and the volunteer solar electrician installed new batteries for the solar array at the beginning of July, and will be installing 2-3 new LED lights this weekend. Thanks for calling our attention to the screen door; we will get that replaced asap. Recently a new King bed was Installed, and it is really comfortable! Next up - a replacement for the sleeper couch. This is the year for maintenance and replacement I guess. When the Streetcar Station bathroom is not a available, folks use the hanging solar shower we have at the cabin (fill with water from the rain water barrel, then hang in the sun to warm the water). Or dip in the river or big lake! Thank you again for the review, and for renting from the North Woods Conservancy.

It was a cabin in the woods just as expected!

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay! We used the cabin as home base and did a lot of exploring in the peninsula. Unfortunately it was quite rainy so we were unable to enjoy a fire outside. My only complaint is that the sofa bed was broke so we had to put the mattress on the floor which made the cabin feel smaller. But my daughter's didn't seem to mind!

peaceful place in the woods but close to everything

  • 4 of 5

We split our time between taking day trips to Cooper Harbor ( Estivant Pines Nature Sanctuary, Grandpa's and Hunters Point our favorites) Calumet (mine ruins, walking tour of town, and pasties at Connie's Kitchen), Gratiot River County Park beach and hanging at the cabin reading, eating, etc.

No bugs other than a few mosquitoes and ticks (no black flies, deer flies, etc). The road in is passable with a SUV. Solar panels work amazingly well for how forested the location is although we just used one light. Had good cell phone coverage and good radio reception - two musts.
