About Mike & Christine Newton

Chrissie and I live near Ashbourne in Derbyshire, the so called "Gateway to the Peaks" but we have always loved travelling to the Cotswolds for long weekend breaks and holidays. We felt the time was right for us to purchase our own country bolthole in the area and be able to explore even more of this beautiful part of the country. This picture was taken of us having fun at the nearby "Daylesford" Cookery School

Mike & Christine Newton purchased this cottage in 2016

Why Mike & Christine Newton chose Lower Swell

From the moment we first walked into Caffreys Cottage, we immediately felt at home and the feeling of space generated by the open plan ground floor was inherent from that moment. The Cottage has the benefit of all modern facilities but also has the character features that we were looking for.

What makes this cottage unique

We believe that the Cottage is a real home from home, is bright and airy in the summer but also cosy and snug in the colder months. Furnished beautifully, comfort has not been compromised and the location is perfect to take full advantage of all that the Cotswolds has to offer.

Great Location and Beautiful Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Four of us spent the last week at this lovely cottage in Lower Swell. Lower Swell is perfectly located for exploring the Cotswolds, Stratford-upon-Avon and even Oxford. The local pub The Golden Ball was great. Stow-on-the-Wold is only an easy 1.25 mile hike away. Another great walk is to Lower Slaughter and then to Burton-on-the-Water. From Burton, you can take a bus back to Stow for an easy walk downhill to the cottage. The cottage is well equipped for a serious chef if that is your choice. The furniture is beautiful and very comfortable. More importantly, the beds are very comfortable. Thank you Mike and Christine. We hope to come back.

Great Stay!

  • 5 of 5

Had a wonderful time at Caffreys Cottage! Centrally located! So nice for our family of 4 in the main house and grandma having her own 'tower of peace'! Gorgeous area, nice walks on the 'heart of England way'. Extremely comfy beds. Highly Recommend!

Wonderful spacious converted barn

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at the Caffrey’s cottage. It’s very bright and spacious with high ceilings, large kitchen, front and rear gardens. It has radiant floor heating on the ground floor which is a big plus. Upon checking we were contacted by the property manager who made sure that all was well.

The cottage is in a quiet residential area within walking distance to Stow-on-the-Wold that has a lovely square, nice restaurants & coffee shops as well as a Tesco superstore.

The area is surrounded by farmland. During one of our morning walks we discovered the Rectory Farm within a stone’s throw where we picked up fresh eggs from. The space is thoughtfully furnished and very comfortable. The kitchen is large and has everything needed to cook dinners.

The owner Mike was very responsive throughout the process.

We would stay here again in a heartbeat. Thank you. Best, Akcay family

Fantastic cottage for a group of friends over Easter

  • 5 of 5

Great cottage Immensely well stocked with items for your stay. The inclement weather meant that we finished the ‘emergency 1000 piece’ jigsaw but it didn’t detract from the stay at all. Lovely underfloor heating. Cosy and warm indoors. Pub in the village very welcoming - we booked a table for the Saturday night with our dogs and the food was brilliant. A real locals pub. Walked into Stow along the road path a couple of times - far too wet to cross the fields. We will definitely be back. Thank you. My only tip would be to watch out where you park on the road as we had a note from the neighbours one night.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write this review. We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay at Caffreys Cottage and also the surrounding area. Unfortunately, the weather is one thing that we can't control but as you say there is still plenty to do both in the house and the vicinity and the Pub is always welcoming. Parking in front of the garage where you can squeeze two small cars is fine, as is on the lane at the front of the house where there are no restrictions. The only area you can't park, is on the shared access gravel driveway to the side of the house. We very much look forward to welcoming you back, hopefully when the sun is shining and you are able to sit out on one of the garden terraces !

A very comfortable 3 nights in tasteful surroundings. Fabulously located in the middle of the Cotswolds. Everything worked perfectly. Good Wi-fi and Sky TV was a bonus. Very close to Stow/Daylesford etc. Lovely walks.

Lower Swell

The picturesque hamlet of Lower Swell lies amongst some of England's most beautiful natural countryside where in amongst the hedgerows and wild flowers you can see ancient moss covered Milestones. Just a short distance from Stow-on--the- Wold, an old Market Town at the highest point of the Cotswolds, the Village Green is home to a stunning War Memorial and nearby the River Dickler flows past cottages of mellow Cotswold stone. The Village is both quintessentially English and tranquil, with the church of St Mary dating back to Norman times. It features beautiful stained glass, which on a sunny day reflects through to the wonderful stone floors. But what better way to spend the day than taking one of the many walks (including the "Heart of England Way" ) and finishing off back in the traditional Cotswold pub the Golden Ball Inn !

Stow-on-the Wold

At nearly 800ft. Stow is the highest of the Cotswold Towns. Sitting on the Roman Fosse Way and at the point where a number of roads meet, has meant it has always been an important trading centre. It has a long history and the Market Square is large and impressive, which testifies to the Town's former importance. The Square is surrounded by town houses, independent shops, antique centres along with cosy cafes, Inns and restaurants. Some of the largest sheep fairs took place in the town but today the only market to take place is the monthly Farmers Market which still remains very popular
