About Jane Chick
My husband and I live a couple of hours away from Wells-next-the-Sea on the Suffolk coast and we have five grown-up (!) children.
Jane Chick purchased this Cottage in 2015
Why Jane Chick chose Wells-next-the-Sea
As a child I spent the long 6-week summer holidays camping at Wells with my mum and my brother. They were perfectly idyllic times - no rules, no shoes, chocolate sandwiches for tea and a constantly changing supply of playmates. It has always had a special place in my heart and the rest of my family have had no choice but to also fall in love with it. For many years we have talked about buying a holiday cottage here and when Hampden House came on the market we simply couldn't let it go. We spend as much time here as we can.
What makes this Cottage unique
The cottage is just a couple of minutes walk from the harbour, the pubs and the shops in Staithe Street and it only takes about 20-25 minutes to walk along the sea wall to the beach. East End is a no through road and feels like a retreat from the noise and bustle of the town - Hampden House benefits from the best of both worlds. In 2016 we completely renovated the cottage, changing the layout and maximising the views and the light. We have installed a wonderfully effective wood burner so that the cottage is cosy and welcoming even during the winter months. However, the main feature of this property is its position and the views that change constantly as the tide ebbs and flows. The terrace can be enjoyed all day long - even in the winter it's a perfect place to wrap up warm and enjoy coffee or a glass of wine. Having 2 parking spaces is invaluable in Wells, especially during the summer months. NB - until Oct 2018 guests will also have the use of a walled garden opposite the house on the other side of Jolly Sailors Yard. This is a lovely sheltered spot if the wind is a little too chill on the terrace. From 1st October 2018 the garden will no longer be available as we are building a small 2-bed flat on the site.

Comfortable, cosy and in the best position in Wells: right in front of the creek. Great views.
Clean, comfortable and cosy for a winter visit. The best thing though, is its position on the creek, with water views from every front window and a little terrace to sit on with your mulled wine as you watch the stars come out.
We loved our stay, great location, great views. Perfect base to explore the surrounding area
We absolutely loved it here, the log burner on a cool night was perfect. Loved cooking on the aga. Beds were so comfy and such a well equipped house. Had everything and more than we needed. The views from the house and front bedrooms were lovely anytime of day and only a short walk into the town with so many lovely shops and amusement archade for the kids. We will definitely be back
So glad you enjoyed Hampden House and Wells. We look forward to having you back. Jane
Fantastic stay in Wells
We had a brilliant short-break in Hampden House. Extremely comfortable & well equipped - far from being a standard holiday rental.
The location is incredible with great sea/marsh views.
The teens appreciated the WiFi and the adults appreciated the welcome bottle of wine!
We love Wells & we loved staying here and would highly recommend this cottage.
The damage deposit was also refunded promptly after check-out.
Thank you Sarah. Hopefully see you again
Lovely property with great amenities...a home from home
Our second visit to Hampden House, although our connection with Wells next the Sea goes back a long way ... We enjoy the location of the cottage on East Quay, as it makes for easy access to anywhere in the village, the harbour and on to the beach and pinewoods. We feel very comfortable in the house and particularly enjoy the superb views over the mud flats from the bedroom windows. And I always enjoy putting on my coat and taking a glass of wine over to the front garden...with my camera too of course, bliss x
So pleased to have had you back, Sue
A beautiful house in a stunning location
The views from the front of the house and the terrace overlooking the marshes are magical and the vast sky and ever changing vista add to this. The sound of the boats at high tide along with the calls of the sea birds and wading birds are delightful. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
Thank you for a perfect summary of the place, Mary!
beautiful property with stunning views
relaxing holiday with family,
Wells-next-the-Sea is a picturesque and unspoiled seaside town that has a wealth of small individual shops, pubs, restaurants and galleries. Walk along the seawall to the endless sandy beaches, cycle or walk through the pine forests bordering the beach, or fish for crabs from the harbour wall. This area is a bird watcher's paradise and the coastal path runs past Hampden House. Alternatively, you can lie in bed and watch the wading birds on the mud-flats and skeins of migrating geese flying overhead. The attractions in the area include Pensthorpe Natural Park, the grade 1 listed Holkham Hall estate and the fashionable town of Burnham Market.
