Overview

About the property

6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, beautiful private pool and stunning mountain views

Nestled between the Dentelles de Montmirail and the Mont Ventoux ithis lovely family friendly and spacious house, surrounded by vineyards and its own woodlands and trails, lies c. 2 kms from the village of Le Barroux.

The house is welcoming, functional and relaxing and is a perfect get away in the heart of Provence. It is perfect for family holidays or to enjoy amongst friends as well as being great for cyclists and in particular those looking to cycle up the iconic Mt Ventoux as you can cycle from the house to the Mt Ventoux climb as well as many other lovely rides which will be suitable for all levels. It is also a great location for mountain biking with great trails which start from the house itself.

The spacious house has 6 double bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, a large lounge with open fire, a dinning room which can seat at least 8 and a well equipped kitchen with its own dining table. Outside there are landscaped gardens with olive trees and beautiful terraces which wrap around the house giving spectacular views over the Provencal landscape. One of the terraces is covered and has a large dinning table and gas fired BBQ close by (ideal for lazy lunches!), another terrace has a large u shaped contempory sofa suite and chairs with views over the vineyards and the mountains beyond (ideal for relaxing after a long lazy lunch!)

There is a large (18m x 6m) beautiful heated and gated pool open from April with its own pool house (including a table tennis table) and shaded area as well as well maintained gardens.

The interior of the house is decorated and furnished to a high standard with wifi and cable TV as well as music sound systems internally and externally on the terraces as well as by the swimming pool. There is also secure storage for bicycles.

Close to many tourist sites, it is 30 minutes from Avignon, 15 minutes from Vaison la Romaine and a 10 minute cycle ride from the typically Provençal and historic village of Le Barroux.

There is no shortage of local activities: the markets with authentic smells and flavours, coffee terraces and unmissable restaurants, delicious bakeries and pastries, as well as red, white and rosé wine tasting in the famous cellars in the vicinity including Beaumes de Venise (where our own grapes are taken after the harvest in September), Gigondas and Cairanne.

As for sports activities there is a wide choice: horse riding is nearby, cycling excursions (with several bicycle rental shops who will bring hire bikes to the house), walking footpaths accessible from the house, climbing, and of course ... the very sporty and courageous climbing of the Provençal Giant the Mont Ventoux with iconic 1912 metres climb.

In terms of culture, you will be spoiled by the many visits to the most beautiful villages with their narrow lanes, Romanesque churches, abbeys, castles, museums and the ancient sites of Vaison la Romaine, Orange, Avignon and their festivals.

We wish you a very happy holiday in our family home.

About Caroline Rainbird

Nick and Caroline bought their house in 2014 having holidayed in the area for many years. They have 2 young children and as such the house works well for both adults and children. We try and come here as much as we can fitting in with school holidays and have tried to make the house a home as opposed to a holiday let.

Caroline Rainbird purchased this chateau / country house in 2014

Why Caroline Rainbird chose Le Barroux

We have visited the ares on many occasions and love being here so much that we took the plunge and bought our own house here. We all look forward to coming at the house and have made sure it is a real home from home.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

The house has stunning views from the house and pool and is very seculed being set in 24 acres of its own land. Yet within a 10 minutes drive you can be in lovely Provencal villages and towns. When we first came here we feel in love with the house and have not regretted taking the plunge and buying it. We really value the time here and hope you will too.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a fantastic house!

We stayed in the house in september 2017. It is situated on a terrain of many acres of land with trees and vineyards. At the entrance of the property there is a gate and a driveway of about 350 metres up to the house. From the house and its terraces you have stunning views on the mountains (Les Dentelles) and Suzette.

The house is clean, very spacious, has a large well equipped kitchen, a dining room with table for at least 10 and a cosy and large living room with lazy chairs and couches for each guest.

Outside there are some large terraces with modern chairs and couches, a well kept garden (English influence?), and a diningtable with room for many, many guests. We found a secluded terrace on the property, about 30 metres uphill, with an even more stunning view, with wooden chairs and picnic table. This is where we gathered and had a drink at the end of the day to watch the sun set behind the mountains of Les Dentelles.

Directly from the house you can make various (long, medium and short) hikes, for instance to Le Barroux, Suzette, Les Dentelles and to the monastry (where you can buy bread etc. and the wine and olive oil produced by the monastry).

And last, but not least: the swimming pool (about 15 by 8 metres). Heated on demand, and I mean: really heated, not just heated by the sun.

Conclusion: we had a fantastic 3 week-holiday in a superb house. One of the best houses we have ever rented in France!

Charming Provencal Home

  • 5 of 5

Caroline"s home is a beautiful home in a tranquil, rural setting with outstanding views of the surrounding hills and vineyards. We enjoyed all it had to offer including the lovely pool. The kitchen was well equipped and allowed for many gourmet meals, enjoying the wonderful fresh produce from Provence. Caroline and her caretaker, were a pleasure to deal with and responded quickly to any problems.

A beautiful secluded house with stunning views.

  • 5 of 5

This our third stay in this beautiful house. If you are looking for somewhere incredibly peaceful with stunning views then you won’t be disappointed. The house was spotlessly clean and is very well equipped. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need and the house offers all the mod cons you would expect and more so plenty to keep the kids entertained. The swimming pool is of a good size so great if you want to swim some lengths. There is also plenty of space to lounge by the pool including a shaded area. If you want to enjoy the views, then the balcony or the seating area at the top of the plot is the place to be. Aside from relaxing in total seclusion, we also enjoyed visiting the local markets for a spot of shopping. There are also plenty of good restaurants in the surrounding areas. It is certainly worth making use of the guide book written by the locals as it has some good advice on which attractions to visit. We look forward to visiting again in the future.

A stunning propery in an equally stunning location

  • 5 of 5

The house itself is beautiful, very clean, and very well equipped. The pool and grounds are simply amazing - spacious lawns, plenty of areas to sit and follow the sun round, and spectacular views of the vineyards. It is incredibly peaceful and quiet on the property, but excellent restaurants and bars are within easy reach. The owners could not have made things more helpful and welcoming. Can't wait to go back.

Holiday in La Barroux, Provence

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a fantastic holiday. The house is very welcoming, spacious and well equipped overlooking vineyards and olive trees from the terraces with a swimming pool table tennis and amazing views of hilltop villages. It was a superb place to be. We enjoyed meals in local restaurants and visited local markets and did a lot of sightseeing. We look forward to returning.

Car: necessary

Orange and Avignon have regular TGV services - on Saturdays in summer there is a direct fast train from St Pancras to Avignon. The nearest airports are Nimes and Marseille - approx an hours car journey away.

The house is located c 2 km away from the village of Le Barroux which has a small shop, hotel and coffee shop. Within a 10-15 minutes car drive there are lovely villages/small towns such as Beaumes de Venise, Caromb, Malaucene, Aubignan and Sarrians, all of which have lovely restaurants, shops, sports facilities and the lovely weekly markets where you can buy wonderful local produce.

Bakeries are an essential part of any French experience. Caromb has a lovely bakery open from 630am . Beaumes de Venise has three bakeries. The one next to the church and the one up the hill into the older part of the town are very good and have interesting bread alternatives. There is a larger bakery on the main road through town as well. Sarrians also has a very good bread bakery and an excellent patisserie across from each other. All can be found as you drive to the center of Sarrians.

There are many sites to see either quite close or a little farther but always doable as a day trip. Some recommended trips include:

Driving through the Dentelles de Montmirail in the direction of Suzette/Malaucene will lead you to the foot of Mont Ventoux. A trip to the top of Ventoux is very interesting and for the early risers it is possible to watch the sun rise over the Alps (with a view of Mont Blanc on a clear day). It is possible to continue on from Malaucene to Vaison la Romaine with a stop at Crestet on the way. Continuing the circuit will lead you to Sablet, Seguret and Gigondas then on to Vacqueyras and back to Beaumes de Venise.

A visit to Fontaine de Vaucluse (where the Sorgues river emerges from a mountain) and then traveling on to the Luberon valley with many beautiful villages including Oppede-le-Vieux, Gordes, Menerbes, and Rousillon among others will take you into the heart of the Provence of Peter Mayle.

Avignon is well worth at least one day of visiting. It has lots of history with much left over from the years the popes were in residence. July is very busy with the theatre festival.

Aix-en-Provence is slightly farther but also a nice day trip. It is a very cultured city with a history as the former capital of Provence. There is a very interesting walking tour to see where Cezanne walked including a visit to his studio.

Pont du Gard is an amazing aqueduct from the Roman times. It was used to bring water to Nimes which is also worth a trip to see many Roman ruins as well as very good shopping. Also in the neighborhood of Pont du Gard is Uzes which was a French Huguenot city. It has lovely arched walkways and many open squares.

Marseilles can be worth a visit, especially to the old port in the center. There is also very extensive shopping and excellent dining. If you are looking for a more sedate sea experience, it is worth a slightly longer drive to Cassis which is relatively underdeveloped by Mediterranean standards. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is an alternative to see the Mediterranean that also takes you through the Camarques marshes. It is also possible to stop in Arles on the way there to see both Roman ruins and where Van Gogh painted and lived.

Visiting Saint-Remy-de-Provence is also interesting for a view of an old style Provencal village. There is a well preserved Roman town ruin on the south edge of town. Traveling further on to Les Baux is also a good way to see both a perched village as well as the origin of aluminum (bauxite ore is named for this village). There is also a sound and light show in old bauxite mines called Cathedrale des Images.

This region of France provides numerous walking routes. Walking trails are generally well marked although the area is a little hilly so pick your route well!

Bicycling is also very popular in this region. It is possible to rent bicycles in various locations if you do not want to travel with your own bicycle. The bike ride up Ventoux is for the serious bikers. The Ventoux is a frequent Tour d' France segment and is considered one of the world's best climbing routes. This is evidenced by literally hundreds of bikers on the road (more in the a.m. hours than p.m. hours). Canoeing is also possible. There is a very nice and relatively easy canoe trip possible from Fontaine-de-Valucluse to L’Isle-sur-le-Sorgue. More adventuresome canoeing is possible either in the Ardeche is in the region of the Pont-du-Gard.

There are many very good restaurants in the region ranging from 3 star Michelin to simple pizzerias (the pizzas here are quite excellent and often baked in wood burning ovens). Prices also vary considerably with many restaurants having reasonable fixed price menus for lunch during the week. The Glam Gourmets’ Guide in the house will provide you with many other options to try.

Enjoy it all!
