About the property

2-Bedroom Jewel Nestled in the Heart of the Artsy & Funky Village Of Patagonia

It's your vacation. What if the place you chose to lay your head was as sweetly memorable as your outings and explorations?

What if the warm spirit of the home filled you, nourished you, made you smile, and left you eager to return and partake yet again?

...when you stay in this lovingly restored, rare and authentic southern Arizona historic jewel. The casa's 2 colorful, sun-drenched bedrooms and artisan bath with exquisite tilework will happily host your group of up to 4 adults.

Built in 1930 by local justice of the peace Oliver Rothrock, Casa Encanta has retained its ample original patina and regional historic architectural charm. Beyond that, it's a magical, thoughtful space, consciously designed to delight you, our treasured guests.

This charming, artisan-constructed bungalow was built using sunbaked-mud adobe brick and almost-forgotten local building methods... back when the West was still wild.

Birders and snowbirds, artists and writers on retreat, couples and friends all love Casa Encanta for its perfectly aged patina and unique magic. Feel warmly tucked-into the welcoming village, while enjoying a Zen view of the Patagonia Mountains.

Rich colors, deftly-balanced patterned fabrics, original art and carefully considered textures provide creature comforts well beyond the pale of the standard vacation rental. For intellectual pursuits, decamp to the Arizona Room—a light-drenched studio with a wall of windows looking out to the courtyard garden, sheltered by a curtain of Tombstone roses. Settle in with a book and let the slant of afternoon sun illuminate your pages.

Guests comment enthusiastically on Casa Encanta's loving restorations and vibrant, whimsical decor—our 'passion project' over the last 3 years, as we lived here ourselves.

We dearly love this home and loved living here. But now it’s time for us to stop hogging

it, move back to the desert in Tucson to be closer to family, and share this jewel of the Mountain Empire with you—our guests!

Contact us today to book your stay! We're 'hospitality nerds', so come, be spoiled by us!

In winter, with a dust of snow on the Mountain Empire, Casa Encanta gathers you into its warm, cheery, mud-adobe hug. A fire flickers in the living room, and the plush down-filled sofa is the perfect place to curl up and watch the satellite-enabled flatscreen TV. Or browse the Internet on your device—we provide the free WiFi! Meanwhile, the 11-inch thick mud adobe regulates the casa to an ideal temperature—no matter the season. Who needs a thermostat?

Because our weather is so exceptional year-round, we put a lot of time and care into our outdoor spaces. Flowers spill from planters, twinkle lights encircle the front porch columns, and a wood-burning chiminea adds extra warmth to the courtyard after sunset.

At dinnertime, gather in the hidden courtyard for a meal with your sweetheart or an intimate garden party with a couple of friends. Share a bottle of wine and a feast from the full kitchen at the dining table under dappled leaf cover.

The powerful nostalgia of the generously-sized, tin-roof-covered front porch invites you to stop and relax, sip lemonade, catch up on conversation, breathe some fresh air and take in the sweet mountain setting and sound of birdsong.

There's an iron patio set on the back patio that comfortably seats 4, and a rustic Mexican stamped-tin patio table that seats 2 on the sunset deck. On the front porch, enjoy an old fashioned rocker, vintage wicker settee, coffee table and club chair.

For a larger group, consider renting both Casa Encanta (main house) along with Casita Encanta (guest house). The casita sleeps 2 adults, and has 1 bedroom and 1 full bath. Please note, both the casa and the casita are designed as adults-only getaway spaces.

Since 2006, many sensitive improvements have been made by local artisans, including:

- Gas-fired fireplace with cantera limestone mantel and surround

- Vintage front porch columns

- Concrete kitchen countertops

- High-end Bertazzoni Italian professional gas range

- Multiple skylights

- Authentic Mexican saltillo floor tile in bathroom

- Mexican tile and glass block shower surround

- And many more details to the delight the eye of old-house-lovers everywhere

'Patagonia is an eclectic, funky, little artisan town that loves to be discovered.'

Step back... to a place steeped in the mining, ranching, and railroad history that built the West. Step back to a place where residents share stories at the post office and local businesses are still owned by local people... no traffic signals and no chain stores.

The town of Patagonia is appropriately proud of its history and distinctive character. The community is quirky, warm and funky and likes it that way. Patagonia is filled with a surprising diversity of eccentric, creative, neighborly folks from all walks of life embodying a distinct 'Live and Let Live' feeling, while loving and celebrating what makes Patagonia so authentically itself.

Situated at just over 4,000 feet elevation, between the Santa Rita Mountains and the Patagonia Mountains, our village is nestled in the lush, extraordinarily bio-diverse riparian corridor of Sonoita Creek.

The area’s scenic beauty and unique ecology boast the greatest diversity of plant and animal species to be found in the continental United States.

With its' favorable climate and a growing colony of artisans and artists, Patagonia is a soft, colorful spot in which to land and explore. Birders, fishermen and hikers share the streets with shoppers looking for that perfect and unique gift -- and everyone revels in the delightful year-round weather.

About Claire O'Connor

My husband Ken and I are co-adventurers who sold our house and belongings in Tucson, Arizona, USA to head off to a life of savoring, beauty, abundance and creative expression in France, Italy, Ireland, Scotland and England.

After a year-and-a-half-plus of vagabonding, (including 13 months living in the Languedoc region of France), we're happily back in gorgeous, sunny southern Arizona. We renovated this circa-1930s raw-mud adobe in the sweet Mountain Empire village of arts-y Patagonia, AZ, along with the guest house. (An adventure in itself!) We split our time between Tucson and Patagonia.

Ken is a Hospice Chaplain and Director of Hospice Volunteer Services, and a retired Methodist minister (though of the spiritual-not-religious variety). He also has a part-time private practice as a pastoral counselor and workshop leader specializing in working with men around issues of conscious living/ aging/dying/legacy-creation. Ken also officiates several weddings each month throughout Santa Cruz and Pima counties.

I'm an artist and a facilitator of women's creativity and personal growths groups, classes and retreats. We both love meeting interesting and curious-minded folks from all over the world.

We also invite you to check out our sweet little private 1-bedroom/1-bath guest house, Casita Encanta, at the back of our property. We've set it up as a the perfect little self-contained, short-term vacation rental.

We'd be delighted if you'd like to book a stay while exploring our little corner of paradise!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We love every single thing about Casa Encanta!! My girlfriend and I especially loved the decor, and enjoyed examining all the special touches and details—artwork, dishes and great bedding!

After traveling several days from New York with our tiny Airstream trailer, it was such a delight to arrive at Casa Encanta. Entering through the rustic door to the courtyard was like entering a secret garden — such nice seating spots and great landscaping. Even more exciting was entering this charming house and exploring each room, all beautifully decorated and super-clean. The owner has taken such care to make every area inviting and comfortable.

We shared this space with our dear friends who were equally impressed. I've never experienced a rental property so well stocked — great linens, assorted coffee & teas, interesting reading material (including a book about the owners' restoration of this property), excellent cookware, laundry supplies, firewood, and even first-aid supplies! Nothing has been overlooked to give people a positive rental experience. And Claire was so helpful in accommodating our needs, and checking on us to be sure we were enjoying our stay.

Patagonia is a charming and sleepy little town. The Wagon Wheel was a great slice of local life, the Velvet Elvis had awesome pizza, and the bakery was a frequent stop. While the guys golfed, the ladies took advantage of wine tasting opportunities in Elgin. Who would have thought that southwest Arizona would have vineyards?! We enjoyed Patagonia's slow pace, and exploring other areas from our home base at Casa Encanta. We would happily return for another visit.

Definitely a Gem!

Opening the rustic courtyard door to the outdoor area surrounding Casa Encanta was like stepping into a "secret garden", after our long journey westward from NY. Even more enthralling was entering this absolutely charming rental property. I can't say enough about the decor: comfortable furnishings, top of the line bedding, interesting art work, and the flavor of the decor was just enough "southwest" without being too cute. Extremely tasteful. And everything was super clean!

We were two couples, staying for a week, and there was an ample amount of space - thankful for beautiful weather to enjoy outdoor spaces in addition to indoors. I must say that I have never rented a property so well stocked - teas, coffees, laundry supplies, paper products, first aid supplies, firewood.......the owner thought of absolutely everything! And thank you Claire for being so welcoming and concerned as to our comfort and happiness during our stay. I would return to Patagonia and Casa Encanta in a heartbeat!

What an adorable home. I really felt comfortable at your casa. Everything was furnished first class, and when I forgot to bring conditioner, you had it available. My stay couldn't be better.

Nice location for a getaway

  • 5 of 5

A nice, needed family respite from the city. Was nice to walk everywhere in Patagonia and get to know the local folks at the library and natural food market. A couple early morning, windows-down drives to Elgin and Nogales. And Claire and Ken's adobe gem for comfort and relaxation. Claire is very attentive, keen to the little things, possesses a good sense of humor, and provides a well-appointed home.

The many seating areas inside and out, beds and linens provided restful sleep, well-stocked kitchen and great stove allowed us to dine in so to enjoy the home more, radio (playing local station with eclectic mix of music) and local magazines (Arizona Highways) were a nice touch, helpful stick it notes throughout the house, great shower and bathroom (with bidet!), great ceiling fan in master bedroom, dark and quiet at night with little light pollution that allows the night sky's brightness to be a class 3 on the Bortle Scale (that trivia provided by Claire), and much more.

Thank you Claire and Ken. Take care. We hope others will take time to enjoy your adobe as much as my wife, two boys, and I did.

The nicest VRBO I have ever stayed in....

  • 5 of 5

For anyone looking to stay in the Patagonia Az area. Look no further then Casa Encanta. This is one of the most enchanting , relaxing homes we have ever stayed in. The owner has out done herself to make sure all of your needs are taken care of, during your stay. Whether it is for one night or a week. The outside spaces are so inviting, that you can't make up your mind where you want to enjoy first.

If there was a rating scale from 1- 10, and ten being the highest. I would give this home a 15 rating. I just hope it will be available the next time we need our birding fix and need to stay in Patagonia Az.

Thanks for sharing this magical place with all of us, Matt & Tara

A truly special place

  • 5 of 5

We spent a tremendously relaxing Christmas in Patagonia. We were able to rent both the case and casita to accommodate our group size and it couldn't have been a more perfect place to stay. The accommodations were comfortable and beautifully decorated. The kitchen, where we cooked many meals, was well stocked with cook wares and spices. We enjoyed reading by the fire by day and made an outdoor fire in the chiminea to enjoy star gazing in the evenings. For birders, this is an especially lovely location just a few minutes walk to the Patton House and down the road to the TNC preserve. Clare was super responsive and helpful getting our visit set up. We couldn't have asked for a better experience.

Great hidden vacation in southern Arizona

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful 2 weeks in Patagonia, AZ. Not to be to trite, but we really did have a wonderful time. The town of Patagonia is a little gem, we were able to walk over to the grocery and the restaurants. Enjoyed breakfast at the saloon several times and lunch at the cafe. We did some hiking, birding and driving around the back country roads. Really enjoyed the house. It made us feel very much at home and Claire was able to help when the TV inadvertently went out. Also enjoyed KPUP, what a wonderful radio station. Have even found it on the internet since we've been home. We felt very much at home in Claire's house, she has added so many touches and thought of so many extras that one doesn't usually get when renting a home. We just stayed at home for a few days, as we were not feeling well, and really enjoyed the outside patios. Able to read and eat and enjoy the birds coming into the yard. It is truly a great vacation house, well maintained and very clean upon arrival. Thanks so much Claire and Ken for allowing us to stay there. Mary and Dan Helvoigt

Owner's Response: So happy to hear that you found our Casa Encanta to be comfortable, warm, welcoming, and well-outfitted -- both indoors and out! My hubby Ken and I so appreciate that the love and attention we've lavished on the spaces is seen and felt by our treasured guests. We love the opportunity to delight, and our main goal is to have the space delight our guests. We also aim to delight in our quick responsiveness to guests' needs and requests, so we especially love when guests let us know if and when anything is amiss. In this case, the satellite dish receiver needed to be re-booted, which took only but a moment.
