Murren is a cosy mountain village situated at 1650m at the foot of the ski mountain Schilthorn 2970m on a ridge of a 800m cliff drop above the Lauterbrunnen valley right across of the impressive Jungfrau massive. Murren is by many referred to as the most beautiful ski resort in the world. The village is car free and only reached by cable car/train. The cable car that leaves from Lauterbrunnen is reached by car from International airports in Bern (1 hour) Zurich, Basel and Geneva in approximate (2 hours) or by train in just over 3 hours.
Murren ski area is connected to two other ski resorts in Berner Oberland, Wengen and Grindelwald. Together they form the ski area Jungfrau that includes 44 lifts, 213km of pist with 98 different trails including the most famous one - The Lauberhorn Rennen in Wengen, the Alpine World Cup's longest downhill race.
Murren is the birthplace of alpine skiing. It was here ski tourism was born in the early 1900s and the first competition in slalom was arranged here in 1922. Since then Murren is one of the few exclusive ski resorts that has arranged Alpine World Championship twice, the first one in the history was 1931.
The relative few number of hotels and tourist beds in Murren versus the size of the lift system is unusual in the Alps and results in a laid back and relaxing atmosphere without any queuing at the lifts.
There is plenty of space on the pistes and the powder stays untouched for day's.
In Murren you get the feeling that the industrial ski tourism is far away, it's a place where you get to experience how skiing used to be in the past when a ski holiday meant a time to relax and enjoy nature. Your stay in Murren will be a return to the roots, the luxury of taking things slowly with a taste for beauty.
During the summer months, Murren is the perfect place for a relaxing holiday with a stay in Chalet Sofia being something truly special.
Chalet Sofia has many charming outside spaces where you can enjoy the long sun-filled days, basking in the outdoor hot-tub appreciating the sensational views of the snow capped mountains.
Murren provides you with the perfect backdrop to a wealth of activities, events, adventures and escapes. As you would expect in the mountains, there are fablous and extensive hikes to discover, from all day hikes to shorter excursions. There are many mountain bike trails to explore and for the more adventures there is a spectacular Via Ferrata. Great conditions to do Tandem Paragliding down into the beautiful Lauterbrunnen valley, there truly is something for everyone. Many of the great mountain restaurants are also open during the summer months. The Sports centre in the village is open all year around with a swimming pool, gym and Spa. In the winter they also keep an ice rink for skating, ice hockey and curling. In the summer that turns into a football field with synthetic grass.
The Lauterbrunnen valley with its steep sides and many waterfalls ( 72 to be exact) has been the inspiration for the author J.R.R Tolkien and his Middle Earth's Rivendell in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
The beauty of this area in the summer can not be described, it has to be experienced but I leave you a quote from J.J.R. Tolkien " I left the view of the Jungfrau with deep regret: eternal snow, etched as it seems against eternal sunshine, and the Silberhorn sharp against dark blue: the Silvertine ( Celebdil) of my dreams"

Beautiful chalet in a beautiful village
Our group of 10 friends came to Murren to experience the Swiss Alps, and experience we did! The chalet easily accommodated 10 adults in 5 separate bedrooms. We were able to congregate outside on the balcony every morning and evening for communal downtime while enjoying the spectacular views. However, the chalet is large enough to allow for private time as well. The kitchen was well stocked although we only really used it for breakfast and snacks because the restaurants the owner suggested were so good, we didn't want to cook at night. The owner also suggested several activities (paragliding, white water rafting, hiking, and the via ferrata) which were challenging but also incredible experiences. The owner and house manager went above and beyond to help us with anything we needed. Overall, a wonderful experience.
Outstanding experience in the Swiss Alps
Chalet Sofia is an outstanding place. It is modern, clean, roomy, comfortable and well equipped. The views of the Swiss Alps are amazing. The owners made us feel welcome with their communication before, during and after our stay as well as with some complimentary beverages and snacks upon our arrival. The latter was unexpected, but an extremely nice touch. We highly recommend staying at Chalet Sofia when visiting Murren!
Amazing chalet. We had a wonderful week with our family staying at Chalet Sofia. I couldn't recommend it enough! Stunning views and charming setting. We hope we can come back again soon!
CHALET SOFIA, Mürren, Schilthorn, Jungfrau region, the dramatic nature, the activities, the weather, the food and the company - if you are of the opinion that there is no upper limit how good life can be - then you are in the right PALACE!!
We have had the best family holidays lodging in Chalet Sofia. Superb breakfasts on the patio with the sun, Eiger, Munch and Jungfrau as company. Beautiful days filled with activities such as hiking, biking and rock climbing as well as running and weight training. Long quiet evenings with extraordinary food. And then as a conclusion to the day we say good night to the mountains! At night we sleep deep and dreamless, in divine beds, with full focus on tomorrow
How many pictures have we taken on the Eiger? At least a hundred a day!
There are many activities to choose in Mürren. Here are some of our favourites that we've received as testimonials and witch we now are happy to pass on.
- Hike to Rotstockhütte and eat a Rotstockhütte teller - wash down with a beer or two!
- Hike and climb the Schilthorn, stay on Schilthornhütte for a lunch before you go ahead. Once on the Schilthorn, cheat and take the cabin down.
- Take a packed lunch to Chilchbalm. It’s a magical place, a nature's own temple, a celebration of life and nature.
The whole family loves Chalet Sofia and Mürren - Thord and Annika, Malin and David, Hanna and Petter, Linus and Annika and Alice.

The Chalet manager was very helpful and service minded with extremely good knowledge of Mürren and the surroundings. Top class!!!
