In the beautiful foothills of the Pyrenees in the South of France lies the wonderful Cathar country between Carcassonne, Toulouse and Perpignan. In these beautiful surroundings you'll find the Chalet, a self-catering cottage with a stunning mountain view from the porch.
The surrounding forests are great for nature lovers. Many beautiful paths offer you surprising walks: through the local natural labyrinth, to the lakes, the Cathar castles and into the Pyrenees mountains. On your way you might occasionally stumble upon some lively markets and floral medieval towns and villages. It's a region full of mysteries, old legends and hidden treasures that are waiting to be discovered.
Just a few kilometers away from the chalet you can discover the medieval castle of Puivert, with its armoured knights and minstrel tower. It overlooks a stunningly beautiful valley which stretches for several miles with dramatic colours representing each of the four seasons.
At a half hour drive the even more sturdy fortification of Montsegur awaits you, the last vestige of the proud Cathars. More nearby you can visit the pittoresque medieval town of Mirepoix. 60 km to the north, you'll find the amazing medieval fortified city of Carcassonne.
The Chalet is set in the beautiful hamlet of L'Assaladou near the village of Nébias, about 8 kilometers from the market town of Quillan. At 7 kilometers from L' Assaladou you can relax at a charming lake with several recreation facilities. It has its own beach with lifeguard, playgrounds and amenities (restaurant, bar, paddle boats and more).
The Mediterranean beaches and the tax-free shopping paradise of Andorra are just 1 hour and 15 minutes away. At an altitude of 600 meters Nébias is also a great location for those who plan to ski as it’s only a half hour away from the ski station of Camurac and one hour from the larger Les Monts d'Olmes or Ax-Les-Termes, with its hot spa waters.
Sunny, snowy or rainy, there is always something to do at l’Assaladou and somewhere to go to, in summer as well as in winter. There are plenty of outdoor activities: swimming, walking, cycling, horse riding, rafting, canoeing and even gliding. There is an abundance of wildlife with many species of birds, butterflies and wild flowers which are rare or non-existent in the UK or US. Golden Eagles have frequently been spotted as have other raptors and a range of passerines. The Chateaux at Montsegur and Chalabre together with the walled City of Carcassonne so graphically described in Dan Brown's book's 'The Da Vinci Code', 'Angels and Demons' and others such as Kate Mosse's 'The Labyrinth' and Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh and Henry Lincoln's 'The Holy Grail' are within easy reach.
You might want to spend some time on your own and enjoy nature and the peace and tranquility of your comfortable chalet. However there are several common meeting areas, such as the swimming pool, the mountain view terrace and the campfire in the evening, where you can also enjoy an excellent bottle of local wine or locally brewed beer with other guests. On cooler days we heat up the wood burning sauna, which is for communal as well as for private use.
Moreover L'Assaladou is an inspiring ecological holiday and retreat centre. It offers possibilities for personal development emphasizing rest and well-being by providing healthy food, coaching sessions and herbal knowledge.
During your stay you might become interested in herbalism and you might even want to pick some herbs with Katrin, the landlady, who specializes in herbal medicine. Visiting our octagonal herbal garden or mandala garden, surrounded by our own bees, you can get to know our way of gardening, with all due respect for nature. Or you simlpy might be visited by one of our cats or the free-range rabbit or chickens (no dogs).
English is the common language but many other native languages may be heard. It's a welcoming environment, so it should be easy to get to know each other if you'd wich so.
