Child and pet friendly "Casa la posada"
This modest house built in an Arabic style, combined with Colonial features offers the best of both worlds for entertaining or just leading a quite life. Two spacious sunny balconies with the view of the tallest mountain in Mexico "The snow capped Pico de Orizaba" provides the ideal space to enjoy the first part of the morning.
An un-suite shower and toilet fully tiled. A lockable wardrobe, with the option of bringing in an extra chest of draws; a double sized bed and a portable gas heater. Floors cleaned throughout, and clean bedding and towels are provided once a week. Please note: In the presence of pets we would like our customers to provide their own bedspreads.
The kitchen/dinning room:
Fitted with a gas stove and oven; fridge freezer; microwave; slow cooker; blender; toaster; and coffee maker, as well as a fully stocked spice rack. The kitchen is equipped with enough crockery and cutlery in addition to a complete range of cooking utensils facilitating effortless home cooking. My favourite feature of the kitchen is the fully functional brick grill/oven. Not only is perfectly suited for grilling your favourite cuts of meat, and vegetables, but can also provide warmth on a cold winter day (firewood provided).
This living area of the house is routinely visited by the humming birds that come to feed from the lemon tree and other nectar laden plants cultivated in the patio. A second dinning table and chairs is provided in this area, should you decide to enjoy your meal "al fresco" during the hottest part of the day. Bamboo furniture provides comfortable seating accommodation and a TV/DVD device is provided for your entertainment as well as an ample coffee table. Another very important feature in the patio is the fire wood stove called " Estufa Justa". Our guests are welcomed to try this facility; which is excellent for making the famous Mexican tortillas as well as beef burgers, roasted plantains, sweet potatoes, and even crepès. Please, don't be afraid to ask for assistance in this gastronomic experience, it comes free of charge!
The roof top:
Are you a sun worshipper? Well, this is the place for you! This area of the house enjoys complete privacy from any overlooking neighbours. Sun visited from 09:00 fully tiled floors provide the ideal space for an idle moment. This is the only communal area visited from the downstairs tenants who would only come up to adjust the hot water thermostat (if needed). An iron and ironing board are provided here for your convenience.
Additional features and points to consider.
Additional single bed supplied for short stays. Wi-fi signal throughout. A small wild area provides the needed space for your pet's needs, and no car parking area available at present. The house is situated away from the main busy road at a three minute walk to the taxi and bus service. A stalls market brings in the freshest of fruit, and vegetables on Saturdays and a very well stocked supermarket is five minutes away in a taxi. Eco tourism is a developing industry in this area and we would be very happy to recommend the "in" places to go to at very short distances.
I was charmed by Casa la Posada. As I was preparing meals I enjoyed the view of the barrio and of the volcano, Orizaba. When curious about a sound, or someone hawking things like water or tamales, I could step out on the narrow balcony to investigate. I liked relaxing in the sitting area off to one side of the lovely patio with orchids, gardenias and other flowering plants. The upstairs kitchen/bedroom apt. opened onto this spacious area. We had our dog Mina with us. It was so easy to take her to the third level open area for her "needs". This area has a bamboo tree barrier where it connects to the adjacent property. The second level has a wonderful washing machine and clothes lines which I happily used. What was most obvious to me was that there had been so much attention to details for my comfort. In terms of enjoying Xalapa, it was an easy and interesting walk to grab a taxi. We visited the Anthropology Museum twice, the main reason we returned to Xalapa. Our host did us a favor by recommending a coffee shop on the Callejon Diamante in Centro. Indeed, it is some of the best coffee I have ever tasted. For any questions during our stay, we communicated by email with our host who responded quickly. I want to add about the car repair we needed while in Xalapa. We have an 84 Volkswagon vanagan camper. A wheel bearing was giving out as we neared Xalapa. We were able to take it to the Volkswagen Agencia. Although they do not work on "old" cars, they accepted the challenge of finding the parts locally and repairing it. It seemed to me to be a perfect example of the kind of hospitality we encountered during our visit.
One must start with Elizabeth, the owner, a Mexican (Xalapena) who lived in the U.K. for more than 20 years and speaks excellent English. She is very helpful, knowledgable and friendly.
The house is well maintained, well decorated and furnished, a bit rustic and on a dirt road. For someone who plans a lengthly stay it is great; for someone with one or two days visit, it is a little distant from the center of things, in a relatively new colonia -- taxi drivers are not familiar with the area.
However, if I was to return to Xalapa, I would return, no questions asked.
This is what I would want to know about this rental. When we first arrived, we were't sure. It was night, raining and this place is different. . . not in city center, rustic looking, Mexican ambiance and neighborhood. Not your usual tourist rental. When we left five days later, this rental was what we enjoyed the most about Xalapa. It has all the conveniences, a four-burner stove w/oven, full size refrigerator, comfortable bed, and a pretty good shower (pressure a little low, but hot water not shared with anyone else.) What we grew to love were the feel of the apartment, the courtyard open to the skies through the accessible third floor balcony, and the experience of living in Xalapa. In addition to the apartment (one bedroom with bath and kitchen with breakfast table), you have access to covered, open living space with TV, sofa, table and chairs. Sitting out in the sun in beautiful private space was very enjoyable. Going to third floor to lounge or view town below was great. If you prefer upscale, this may not be for you. If you like new experiences and somewhere to feel at home, this may be just what you are looking for.
The owner went above and beyond to make sure our stay was pleasant. She does not live close, but is readily available. Not easy walk to tourist spots, but bus close by at bottom of hill. We found Xalapa to be easy to drive in, albeit some heavy traffic. Lots of parking lots at this historic center for a dollar an hour. Lots of small neighborhood stores and businesses close to apartment. Neighbors were very friendly and helpful. There were noises, sometimes louder than others, but most of the time it became a familiar hum that we appreciated and miss. When we go back to Xalapa, this is where we will stay.
Due to a change of plans, I was not able to stay at the address we had paid for. The manager was extremely prompt and effective at getting me in touch with the property owner and I was able to receive a full refund! I had no idea what the consequences would be for having to cancel a reservation long paid for, but was delighted with her quick response and the property owner's gracious and fair-minded response to my dilemma.
