About Maggie Hill

I live in a little village in Northhamptonshire when I am not living in Les Roses Trémières, the house next door to La Maison Fleurie. Since retiring from our Bathroom and Kitchen business in Stamford my husband and I enjoyed our double life between France and England for many years. Recently widowed I continue to travel between my two homes, often accompanied by family and friends. I have great neighbours and friends in and around Civrac and I hope visitors to my properties also find the area friendly and welcoming.

Maggie Hill purchased this cottage in 1994

Why Maggie Hill chose Saint-Fort-sur-Gironde

My husband and I bought these two properties next door to each other in 1994. We chose this area because it is said to have the second best climate in France after the south of France.... but not such a distance to travel and not so crowded ! It is a lovely area with great weather. We lived in La Maison Fleurie whilst renovating the larger house next door, Les Roses Tremieres (which means hollyhocks). La Maison Fleurie is available for renting all through the year and we also rent the larger house next door when it is not being used by myself or the family.

What makes this cottage unique

The area is so relaxing, the air is fresh and clean coming from the Atlantic. It never gets too busy except perhaps in Bordeaux and Royan in the high season !! This area is very French and not too commercialised. It is a great centre for touring around as so many interesting towns and tourist sites are within easy reach.

Spacious, comfortable and well decorated and equipped

  • 4 of 5

A narrow frontage sandwiched between two larger houses. On entering one had the impression of 'Dr Who's telephone box' walking into a large, airy, roomy space. Two rooms, one with well equipped kitchen area leading to a bathroom. (Being an old guy I was particularly happy with the bidet)! A bottle of red wine on the table and a white in the fridge was a nice welcoming touch. A small garden well tended with plenty of garden furniture. Fine views of the countryside to one's right. Upstairs, two bedrooms with comfortable beds. It gave us a good base to explore the surrounding countryside. Nice beaches to be found not far away and a local baker in the town five minutes drive away. Locally are beaches, a well excavated Roman town, a drained reed swamp to walk through, many excellent restaurants and a vineyard next door! As always there is a downside. We had problems with mosquitos. There were electrically operated gismos to deter them. We thought they were air fresheners which we don't like. Maggie has said she will put info about this in her 'house book'.

All in all a very pleasant stay. Thank you Maggie!

A perfect hideaway easily accessible to resorts

  • 4 of 5

Despite the inclement February weather we spent a lovely two weeks exploring fabulous locations along the Gironde estuary. La Maison Fleury is spacious, clean cottage with everything you need to make your stay comfortable. It is tucked away in a quiet peaceful hamlet typical of the area, surrounded by fields and views of the Gironde estuary. We purchased some delicious local wine from the vineyard next door and visited the lovely Chateau Beaulon a few minutes drive away where you can book a wine tasting tour of the vineyard. The local village is 15 minute walk from the cottage, with it's friendly bar and shops. You do need a car but are within easy access of the beaches of Meschers, St George de Didonne and the larger resort of Royan. We enjoyed excellent food at many of the port side cafes in Meschers and Mortagne, visited the restaurant Chez Gigi a couple of times, a 10 minute drive away in the lovely old port town of Mortagne sur Gironde. Spent a day exploring the sites and shops in Bordeaux and another in Blaye with it's medieval Citadel, both easy to get to and about an hour's drive away. It's perfect for those who like to experience the hustle and bustle of a resort or busy town during the day, or cycle around the quiet country lanes exploring the many typically French villages in the area but then escape to the peaceful hamlet to sip wine in the garden as the sun is setting.

A week in sunny Civrac

  • 5 of 5

Together with another couple we spent a week at La Maison Fleurie in September 2014.

A comprehensive list of instructions to find the gite by car was provided by the owner and upon arrival we were welcomed by a vase of flowers and a couple of bottles of wine.

The gite was spacious , clean , comfortable and very well equipped . It was situated in a quiet area within a small village.

We found that the information given on the website and contained in the owner's brochure gave a true picture of the property, its environment and nearby facilities. There were numerous restaurants of all types in the area most of which, however, required a car to access.

During our stay we visited Royan on several occasions and found it to be a charming seaside town with several good beaches, our favourite being Le Grand Cote to the north side of the town with adequate parking and restaurants nearby.

We also went Blay approx. 40/50 minutes by car to the south of the gite and had a fascinating time exploring the large fort there. If we had gone earlier we would have considered crossing the estuary by ferry to explore the Medoc area. We also visited the interesting fishing vlilages/towns of Port Maubert and Meschers.

An added bonus to the Maison Fleurie is that a vineyard is situated nearby where one can (and we did!) purchase good wine and homemade honey at reasonable prices.

During our stay we were fortunate in having the gite's owner staying in the house next door - she was very friendly without being intrusive and made us very welcome giving us produce from her garden and allowing us to raid her fig tree for ripe fruit.

We certainly enjoyed our sojourn in Civrac and would definitely recommend La Maison Fleurie to anyone but with a proviso that car is necessary.

A great Gite

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time staying at Dick and Maggies Gite, the location was excellent with lots of sun in the morning for breakfast in the garden.

The kitchen and bathroom were fully stocked and there was an excellent welcome pack with great recommendations for things to do and places to see.

The bikes and boule set were a great surprise!

The only negative was that the cleaner turned up at 10 on the day we were leaving when we thought it would be 12. This meant a rather hurried pack up!

Thanks again and we would definitely reccomend this Gite to others.
