Overview

About the property

Heated Indoor Pool;Sunny, Secure Garden; Large Sitting Room & Spacious Kitchen

Nestling in a green valley equidistant between the Dordogne and Lot rivers, amongst sweeping fields and woods, minutes drive from the stunning medieval Bastide town of Monpazier lies 'La Dame Blanche'. A traditional, honey coloured stone farmhouse of old beams and cool stone floors with views over the surrounding fields and woods. A haven for family, friends, short getaways and summer retreats with plenty to occupy even the most curious of sightseers.

The property sits in a large, secure garden with grass and mature trees. It has a garage and drive enabling off road parking for several cars. Gates ensure complete security.

There are several loungers and comfortable seating in the garden as well as space for games. Under the porch of the house is our favourite place to eat outdoors or sit with a cup of tea or something more bubbly.

The house is all on the ground floor, although there are a few steps between some levels. The front door opens onto a large comfortable sitting room with a wood burning stove. There is a large sofa with three other arm chairs, a desk for working at a computer. Other furniture includes a cupboard with books about the area, a collection of english language DVDs and various board games, puzzles and toys in the bottom cupboard for all to use There is a TV -British Freeview and French - plus a DVD player. There is also a CD player.

The sitting room opens onto a large kitchen with fridge freezer, dishwasher, gas hob, extract fan, oven and microwave grill. As this has been our home there is everything a chef requires including food processor, weighing scales and all manner of cooking utensils. There is a large old walnut table capable of entertaining 8 or even 10 at a squeeze but normally just 6 chairs are around it (although there are two more in the laundry room if needed).

Off the kitchen is the door to the pool room. This has an insulated tiled room with glass windows all around. The pool has an alarm which must be kept activated if children are in the room without an adult. The doors must also be kept shut when the pool room is unoccupied to prevent children wandering in unattended. There is a table and chairs so meals can be had by the pool or an evening drink after a hard days lounging (no glass though please). Two comfortable reclining loungers and just right for relaxing in whilst others play. There is also a shower. A variety of pool toys and lilos are kept in the pump room in the garden where all the machinery for the pool is along with the barbecue and a couple of bikes visitors are welcome to use at their own risk.

The large, elegant Master bedroom is off the sitting room with french windows onto the garden. It has is a king-size bed, a hanging cupboard and chest of drawers. There is an en-suite loo and basin.

From the Master bedroom a door leads into the second bedroom with its two single beds and large, antique mahogany Press with plenty of room for clothing. There are also a couple of blankets for putting round your shoulders when you want to sit outside and look at the stars.

Off the second bedroom is another loo and the family bathroom with two basins, bath with shower and bidet. Next to the bathroom there is also a large hanging cupboard and more shelving with spare bedding and towels.

The outbuildings in the garden comprise the pump room, as previously mentioned, in which you will find the barbecue, bicycles, some outdoor games and pool toys. Next door is the laundry room in which there is the washing machine and tumble dryer. There is a hanging drying for which there is a hole in the lawn - can be found by standing in front of the door to the laundry and on the same level as the silver birch trees. There is also a clothes rack, ironing board and iron, vacuum cleaner, spare chairs, cushions for the garden armchairs, child's car seat, child's booster chair and tray for eating at the table and three very large pink cushions for the garden! We have a hammock but we are still finding somewhere to hang it.

The Annex Cottage in the garden offers further sleeping for 4. There is a cosy double room downstairs with an en-suite shower room. Upstairs there is a studio-type room with two single beds. There are chests of drawers in both rooms as well as hanging space.

The main house can be rented on it's own for up to 4 people or up to 8 using the Annex Cottage at an additional cost per person per night.

About Cathy & Ian Lea

Ian and I are currently renovating our home near Oxford, when not working, and love getting away to enjoy the beautiful countryside around La Dame Blanche.

Cathy & Ian Lea purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Cathy & Ian Lea chose Vergt-de-Biron

La Dame Blanche has been our home from home for over 8 years which we have loved sharing with friends and family. After years of international travel, for business and pleasure, we found our perfect place to relax and enjoy everything the Dordogne has to offer. Even after all the years we have been coming here we still have so much to explore and discover. It's not just the beauty of the area but the friendliness of the locals that has made us feel very happy here.

We love the indoor pool which offers children entertainment on the odd rainy day as well as pool parties that can go on into the cooler nights. The glass sliding door enables unimpeeded movement from sunbathing in the garden into the sunny pool room. It's also a great place to sit and chill with its view of the field and woods beyond.

What makes this cottage unique

La Dame Blanche is an old property, renovated from a ruin 30 or so years ago. It has warm, honey coloured, stone walls that keep the house cool in summer. The huge, gnarled, wooden beams over the pool are particularly impressive. We love mixing old and new together hence the mixture of old property (and some old furniture although I hesitate to call them antiques) and modern features and comforts.

Comfortable and secluded

  • 5 of 5

Our stay coincided with rather unsettled weather and the house was warm well equipped and comfortable. After some adjustment to settings the heated pool was very welcome. This is a great base to explore the local area and Monpazier is a short drive away and like most small towns in the region offers free parking. There are excellent footpaths in the surrounding countryside that are generally well marked and maintained offering a variety of round walks of about 10km. We explored the local towns and kept the larder topped up by visiting on market days ( plenty of choice) the Sunday market at Issigeac is a favourite. The occasional days of sunshine were very welcome but the garden is shaded in the late afteroon and evening.

Beautiful relaxing Gite

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful relaxing gite in a lovely location. We are a family of five with two teenagers and a 12 yr old to entertain. This gite with its lovely pool and great facilities meant we were all catered for. We used the pool everyday and it made the incredible heat bearable. The owners are very responsive to any queries and we would strongly recommend this home from home in this beautiful location. There are lots of places to explore and markets to experience as well as great food. We are regular visitors to France and would highly recommend this gite and this location.

Really cosy and relaxing house where we had a great family break

  • 5 of 5

We loved our few days at this house. The photos don't really do it justice - it's got loads of character, the garden is really pretty and the surrounding countryside is really beautiful. The best thing is we arrived and felt instantly comfortable and on holiday as it's a very easy property to get to know. A small road does border the garden which could be a pain if it was busy but it is so quiet, just a few cars a day, so we didn't even think about it during our stay. It's a really peaceful spot.

I would describe it as unpretentious and just a great to place to turn up and hang out. You get sunlight in the garden all day which is nice - we had nice evening dinners on the lawn in front of the house, watching the sun going down behind the hills.

The indoor pool is great, obviously - I don't think many places of this size have their own indoor pool - but we didn't actualy use it that much because we were out and about all day every day as there is so much to do in the area. We love the Dordogne and loved how welcoming this house was and intend to go back. Thanks Cathy.

Fantastic house!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 stayed at La Dame Blanche this summer and we enjoyed our stay immensely. The house is lovely, perfect for our family with a 4 year old, 17 year old and 65 year old. We were all really happy with the set up, particularly the indoor heated pool which we used every day.

The kitchen has everything you'll need for your stay and more and the house is clean and feels homely and comfortable.

The annex is a great addition as it gave my mum and 17 year old some space and quiet from the 4 year old at night/early morning, my husband and I held the fort there!

If you want a holiday home far from the crowds this is definitely for you! The nearby town of Monpazier is lovely! The 'Bastideum' is definitely worth a visit with kids and entertained our whole family for a couple of hours, as is the local glass blowers' studio which was fascinating.

The restaurant 'La Palissy Chez Norbert' in nearby Lacapelle-Biron is definitely worth a visit or two!

The house owners are lovely and very helpful, thank you Ian and Cathy for letting us stay in your fabulous house! We'd recommend La Dame Blanche to anyone.

Idyllic Easter break

  • 5 of 5

Very much agree with the comments made in other reviews about this delightful house and the area. We loved being able to sunbathe in the garden, listening to the birds and watching butterflies and bees on the wisteria. We were in the pool every day which kept my son occupied for hours on end. We enjoyed being able to walk and cycle from the house to Chateau Biron as well as around the surrounding woods and fields. We slept in the newly refurbished Annex Cottage which was very cosy and comfortable. We will be back to further explore this lovely part of the France.

An excellent base to use to explore the area

  • 5 of 5

We both really liked the open, spacious feel to the property, plenty of space to relax. The Bastide towns of Monpazier and Villareal are both well worth a visit and Chateau Birion is just around the corner. Monpazier offers plenty of very nice restaurants. A very pleasant and relaxing place to spend time in a very nice part of France.

Just a few minutes drive away from La Dame Blanche is the beautiful Bastide town of Monpazier with its bustling markets, it's bubbling nightlife, summer events and rich history. With restaurants, cafes, shops and bars a plenty, enjoy a classic French dinner and a bottle of Bordeaux in the local square or while away the night with a Ti' Punch and some live jazz. The locals, friendly and inviting always welcoming one and all into the summer banquets.

Villereal, another medieval, Bastide town 10 minutes drive away, has many shops including a large supermarket and DIY shop plus every Saturday morning an amazing market in the ancient town square.

There are so many chateaus in the area brimming with French and English history - Chateau Monbazillac, Chateau des Milandes, Chateaux at Castelnaud, Beynac, Bonaguil, du Losse - but the nearest is the impressive and imposing Chateau de Biron which at 3.5km away is a short bike or easy walk. The view from the ramparts is breathtaking.

La Dame Blanche is equidistant between the Dordogne and the Lot rivers with many water activities on both. The nearest canoeing is about half an hour by car to the Dordogne.

Other attractions around the Dordogne are the amazing Hanging Gardens of Marquessac or Gardens of Eyrignac, and the huge number of prehistoric sites, troglodyte dwellings and underground caves such as Font de Gaume, Grottes de Maxange and Gouffre de Proumeyssac.

Further away still lies the awesome Roc De Gaugeac high above the Dordogne. Carved from the rock face itself the stunning little town offers lunch by the river, canoeing and a wonderful market. Well worth the drive!

For longer trips, the coastal town of Arcachon has fantastic beaches and a beautiful seaside town. The cities of Toulouse and Bordeaux make for the perfect day shopping and sight seeing trip at roughly two hours away. Likewise if you are traveling through the country, La Dame Blanche makes for the perfect halfway stop in wine country between Paris and the stunning French Riviera.
