Overview

About the property

Beautiful 3 bedroom cottage in Downalong St Ives with garage parking. Sleeps 6.

Pilchard Cottage is a former fishermans cottage refurbished to a high standard, sleeping six people in three double bedrooms.

Garage parking is just paces away from the cottage, a real rarity to properties in this location.

Situated in the old fishing quarter and conservation area of Downalong, the very heart of old St Ives full of twisting turning narrow streets scattered with many art galleries, great restaurants and fascinating architecture, completely enclosed by the harbour and surrounding sandy beaches.

The perfect location for surfing or lounging on the beach (the Harbour beach is just paces away), visiting galleries (the Tate is a 5 minute walk) or for exploring St Ives (shops, restaurants, pubs and several beaches all just a short stroll away).

The cottage is arranged over three floors and benefits from a small patio that catches the morning sun. For those cooler evenings the central heating and real flame fire make things nice and cosy!

2019 bookings are weekly Friday to Friday during peak periods.

At other times bookings are for 3 a night weekend Friday-Monday / 4 night mid-week Monday-Friday.

For alternative dates please send a booking enquiry.

About Alan

We have loved St Ives ever since holidaying here many years ago. After living/working in Birmingham and London we eventually managed to fulfil our dream and make the move to Cornwall. We now live in St Ives, and absolutely love it!

Alan and Sharon

Why Alan chose St Ives

St Ives is a special town and Downalong is at its very heart.

The houses have history, the streets are narrow and higgledy-piggledy and absolutely full of character.

Added to that the fact that you are almost completely surrounded by sea, the harbour and beautiful beaches makes this area especially unique.

What makes this cottage unique

Pilchard Cottage is located right in the heart of Downalong and everything that St Ives has to offer is just a short stroll away.

Garage parking, plenty of internal space and a small patio makes this the perfect property for a relaxing holiday.

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We had searched for the right place to stay in St Ives for a while and settled on Pilchard cottage as it looked of a high standard and had a great location for the beach and shops. We were so happy when we arrived to see how beautiful it was in the flesh. The images don't do it justice and the location was so perfect for the beach, shops and restaurants. We were able to pop back after the beach for refreshments or a shower and back out again to have lunch. Alan and Sharon have thought of everything, the smallest of details making our stay like a home from home. We are already planning a return.

Great Place in Central St Ives

  • 4 of 5

Pilchard Cottage is on Fish St in Central St Ives, and a very short walk to any of the beaches (like 3-4 minutes) or anywhere really. Really nice renovation and pictures completely accurate. Ground floor is a kitchen, small bathroom/utility room and sunken living room. Up some steep steps (those with mobility issues will have a problem) to a reception area with a sunken bedroom. Up some other stairs to two bedrooms and main bathroom. Bonus is parking in garage just a few steps away.

Most people will love this place, so take our 4 star rating with a grain of salt as this is our first time to St Ives and really only specific to us and not necessarily a defect with the property. However: woke up with sore back due to the mattress on the second floor being too soft. Had to switch rooms. The parking garage, a huge bonus, is tricky to get in and out of because of the other cars and sharp angles. And the seagulls! We had to sleep with earplugs in each night because the seagull decibel level is off the charts. Plus first timers to central St Ives will likely be flummoxed by the drive into the property given the tiny one way streets. But you eventually get the hang of it.

Those into St Ives beaches and town life will enjoy this place very much.

Owner's Response: Thank you for writing a review of your stay at Pilchard Cottage. All valid points of course... We advise that the stairs lower to middle floor are fairly steep, which is why we don't advise that the cottage isn't suitable for young children. Saying that, not nearly as steep as some in St Ives!!! Mattress softness is of course subjective, as is parking difficulty! I am used to driving the narrow lanes of St Ives though and I regularly park our 7-seater Ford Galaxy in the garage parking space without any issues. We do detail measurements in the directions document so guests can see this before arriving. Finally, the seagulls... unfortunately this is beyond our control, although this is a noisy time of year seagull wise as new spring babies grow up and develop stronger vocal cords. All part of St Ives and Cornish character generally some would say, as are the narrow twisting turning streets. Hopefully those that love St Ives (as we do) will embrace these 'negatives' and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, even if they do need to pop a pair of ear plugs in at night! Alan

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is in a great position just yards from the harbour. Yes it has steep stairs inside which may trouble some but it’s beautifully equipped. Car space in nearby garage brilliant. Would thoroughly recommend! Owner is very helpful too, responding with info etc to emails v quickly. Thanks!!

Perfect family home from home

  • 5 of 5

We loved the way that modern amenities (new bathroom and kitchen) and furniture blended with original cottage beams and exposed stone.

Very comfortable bedrooms and thoughtful touches such as the cookies and milk.

We were grateful for owners tips on restaurants, places to visit and walks.

Very well stocked and friendly family grocer 100yds away, great restaurant ‘Mermaid’ practically on doorstep and 700year old waterside pub at end of road.

Enjoyed it all and hope to come back.

Every comfort has been thought of!

  • 5 of 5

We could not fault Pilchard Cottage, it is so bright, clean and everything is to an extremely high standard. The space has been utilised so well providing all modern equipment, crisp linen, plenty of storage, it has been beautifully thought out. Location excellent too. Outside space is under cover so great for leaving your sandy boots outside. Treats await upon arrival, thank you!!!
