La Grande Orangerie is set within the walled grounds of the Chateau de Charras, which was built for the Marquis de Charras in the 18th Century. La Grande Orangerie was originally built for fruit ripening and has been sympathetically renovated with exposed beams and stonework. The 5 acres of grounds are delightful, with tree lined avenues, stone staircases and balustrades, providing a very unique setting and sense of history. Within the grounds there is an enclosed heated swimming pool with terrace and sun loungers. La Grande Orangerie has four bedrooms (sleeps 9) and offers spacious open plan living with fantastic panoramic views across the Charente/Dordogne countryside. This delightful region, renowned for its fields of sunflowers, offers beautiful rolling countryside in a rural setting, with the village of Charras offering a grocery shop and boulongerie.

About Charlotte Patricio
I live and work in England with my husband and two children. We have fallen in love with this beautiful region of France and spend all our holidays at La Grande Orangerie.
Charlotte Patricio purchased this House in 2010
Why Charlotte Patricio chose Charras
We purchased La Grande Orangerie in 2010 after spending our holiday at the Chateau the previous two years. We instantly fell in love with the beauty and tranquillity of the Chateau grounds and the stunning fields of sunflowers and rolling countryside which the area has to offer. Each time we stay at the La Grande Orangerie we find new places to explore, whether it is another Chateau to visit, caves to explore or new cycle path to conquer, and that is the beauty of the area in that there is so much to see and do. Our two children (now ages 12 and 10) both learnt to ride their bikes during our holidays at the Chateau and enjoy swimming in the pool and having the freedom of the grounds to play.
What makes this House unique
The great benefit of La Grande Orangerie is the magnificent 5 acres of grounds and the fabulous views from the property across the Charente/Dordogne border. The village of Charras has a boulongerie for those freshly baked morning croissants, and a grocery store, all within a two minutes walk of the Chateau.

Rural relaxation in a well equipped and spacious property.
We were blown away by the beauty of the location within the grounds of a pretty chateau. The property was generously proportioned and equipped for the nine adults and teens in our group. It was a great place to bring a (fairly) grown up family for a relaxing, away from it all holiday. No bored teenagers - tennis, swimming, ping-pong and WiFi!
The beautiful lakes of the Upper Charente are 45 minutes drive which offer canoeing, rowing or peddling on the lake, 18 holes of crazy golf, a small play area, beach volley ball net and beach side restaurant. There is also the picturesque town of Aubeterre which is 45 minutes away with a river and small beach. Further a field is the coastal town of Royan (2 hours); the beautiful port town of La Rochelle (2.5 hours) with an old harbour, beach and fabulous seafood restaurants; and Lacanau Ocean with beautiful sandy beaches and beach side restaurants.
By air: Limoges 1 hour 20 minutes; Bergerac 1 hour and 30 minutes; Bordeaux 2 hours; La Rochelle 2 hours and 30 minutes; and Tours 3 hours.

The region has a micro-climate and benefits from 2,400 sunshine hours a year and is the hottest and sunniest place of the whole Atlantic coast. Wake up early in the morning to see the most beautiful sunrise from your window and look up at night to see an amazing star filled sky. There is something for everyone close at hand with lots of interesting places to visit. For children, there are lakes and beaches with pedalows and canoeing; Nautilius, a large leisure centre, has an Olympic size pool, lazy river, water sides (in door and out) wave pool and rapids for a great day out; Adventure Parc with tree top adventures such as rope bridges, rope ladders and monkey bridges. For adults, there are endless Chateaus, museums, cognac distilleries, churches and an abundance of pretty French towns to visit, not forgetting the great food and wine to be sampled. Local markets can be found every day which offer local produce and tasty gastronomic delights. For all ages, there are ample opportunities for cycling, either off road or on the quiet country roads, and rambling in the Foret d’Horte and surrounding area. After a day of sightseeing or activities, you can return to the tranquillity of the Chateau for a dip in the pool, game of tennis, or unwind with a chilled glass of wine in one hand and a good book in the other. Bliss!! We hope you enjoy the fine cuisine and wines of the region and the places of interest in this beautiful part of France.
