About the property

7 Bedrooms, 3.5 Bathrooms, Sleeps 14

Have you dreamed of ranch living? Of really getting away from it all? Then look no further than the beautiful and celebrated Rockpile Ranch. With a history full of Jesse James outlaws, the Pony Express, and Bonanza TV series, Rockpile Ranch is the perfect escape from reality. With over 800 acres for you to enjoy, wake up among the oldest vines in the region and watch for hawks and deer across sweeping vistas with the provided binoculars. During the day, take a walk to the natural spring and listen to the waterfall or angle for small fish off the dock in the pond. If you’re a little more adventurous, take one of our mapped hikes to the ancient petroglyphs dotted around the property. Not feeling like moving? No problem, sit on the front porch with a book, the back deck with a glass of wine or nap in the shade on the lawn.

Rockpile Ranch is the perfect location for family vacations, birthday trips or getaways with friends; we can host them all! Between the main Farmhouse and the Throop House, originally a Pony Express Station, we have 6 bedrooms plus a loft, with an ability to sleep 14 comfortably and 16 with a squeeze in the loft. Being completely off the grid, all of the power comes from a solar array on the iconic barn. Charge your camera (you’ll need it!) by the power of the sun!

As you ascend from the floor of Dry Creek Valley, you wind through forests of madrone, oak, pine, and manzanita. Driving along the ridge allows for expansive vistas across dramatic hills and valleys. Approaching the ranch, you enter another forest which opens to the first vineyards of Rockpile Ranch. Through the deer fence you descend through the trees where it opens to lush gardens, sprawling lawns, ordered vineyards and a charming yellow farmhouse with a lovely front porch set amongst mature flowering trees.

The Farmhouse has 3 queen bedroom upstairs and 4th bedroom with 2 twin beds. 2 full bathrooms, one with a tub and one with a shower, complete the upstairs. Downstairs, the large eat-in kitchen invites you to slow down, enjoy the view and take it all in. Enjoy a cup of coffee in the built in breakfast nook, or grab a bite to eat at the island. Although off the grid, enjoy the many comforts of home, including a gas Wolf range, dishwasher, microwave oven, propane fridge, Keurig coffee maker, a selection of K-cups and teabags, basic cooking ingredients (or have it fully stocked in advance), plus all the dishes, cookware, and glassware you could need. The living room is comfortably furnished with a wood stove. Sit by the fire and play cards or board games or enjoy a glass of wine at the 8 person dining table. If building a fire isn’t your thing, there is also central heating available. The adjoining den/media room, which overlooks the multilevel deck and garden, has a flat screen TV and DirecTV as well as the internet router.

Over the hill and around the barn is the Throop House, a house you can add on to your rental, was at one time a stop on the Pony Express. Now the Throop House is a comfortable 2 bedroom house with a loft for kids or close friends. The cozy open plan living room features a bright red wood stove, plus a TV and DirecTV. The kitchen is fully stocked with the exception of a stove. If you are looking to took the Farmhouse has a full kitchen. Enjoy the sun rising over the vines from the gorgeous deck.

The fun doesn’t stop at sunset! Besides being fully stocked with cards and family board games, we also host “cowboy cookout” dinners, weather permitting and subject to availability. Watch the stars with no light interference through the telescope from the deck. BBQ up some amazing Sonoma County steaks or chicken on the new gas grill.

No need to stress about what to bring as we are as full service or self-catering as you need. Give us a list and we can stock your fridge for you. If you prefer to do it yourself, we provide all the bedding, linens and towels, shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc. Ask us for particulars and if we don’t currently have it, we can provide it.

* Please note, the property is a functioning vineyard and staff members may be seen on the ranch at various points during your stay, including the on-site caretaker.

** Also, we do not allow for weddings or events at the ranch, as it is extremely remote and all of the power is provided by a solar source.

*** Lastly, hunting and firearms are not permitted on our property. If we hear that you or your party are hunting or shooting firearms on our property, you will be asked to leave the premises immediately and you will not be refunded for your stay.

Beautiful & rustic - perfect for our group celebration!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a lovely stay at Rockpile Ranch. We were 11 plus a baby and were easily accommodated for meals inside and out. Plenty of sleeping space between the two houses. Shady hang out time on the front porch. Large well equipped kitchen for preparing meals. And the views!! Gorgeous in every direction. Everyone loved it! In short, this was perfect for celebrating my 70th birthday.

Beautiful property and wonderful weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at the Rockpile Ranch. The property is quite secluded but is beautiful and was a perfect escape from the city for our group. Since we were a large group, we had the chef from one of Wilson's other properties come in and cook dinner for us one night, which worked out great. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone looking for a weekend or weeklong escape!

Absolute dream ranch

  • 5 of 5

We could not have had a better experience than we did while staying at Rockpile Ranch! It is a spectacular property with all the amenities you could ask for.

The houses on the vineyard provided more than enough room for our large group, we enjoyed every minute in these historical homes. Safe to say that everyone is dying for another weekend at Rockpile Ranch

Beautiful property and homes!

  • 4 of 5

Everything was perfect and the views are much better than the pictures show. The homes and history on this property remind you of a more romantic and simple time. Make sure to skim through the Rockpile Vineyard book in the kitchen to learn about the area. Pour a glass of wine, hang a hammock, and lean back and watch the sunlight peak through the vineyards. Only thing that was a little disappointing is that it isn't mentioned that someone lives in the barn that is right next to the home. We were hoping for privacy and 800 acres to ourselves. After settling in it was like he was never there though so it certainly didn't affect our enjoyment but might be good to put in the description. We were also surprised at how well the off grid electricity worked, we never once ran out of power or had any issues what so ever.

Thanks for the wonderful time!

Owner's Response: Hi Grant, Thank you so much for the great review! The views up at the ranch are seriously to die for. We're so glad you enjoyed the simplicity of it all and everything went well with the power, as it normally does. :-) There is actually a note in the confirmation e-mail regarding the estate being a functioning vineyard, with the caretaker and farm workers sometimes seen on-site, but as per your suggestion, we have added it to the VRBO description as well, to make it a bit more transparent. Hope you're able to come visit again soon!

Beautiful Location for a getaway

  • 5 of 5

Rockpile Ranch is a great hidden getaway retreat. It was perfect for a group getaway with some close friends to celebrate a few birthdays.

The property is hidden well into woods past Lake Sonoma and requires some driving to get to the actual homes and properties. Both homes on the property were cute ranch style homes built in the early 1900's. The place has looks to have been partially renovated in the past few years so a lot of the amenities are new. The beautiful vineyards, open space, and amazing views were the highlight of the property. Stargazing at night after the mosquitoes have died down is a must. The property is far from any major shops, stores and restaurants so make sure you bring groceries in to cook, basics cooking items were missing from the house (salt, pepper, oil), but pots/pans were plentiful. We came across a lot of spiderwebs inside the house when we arrived, I'm not sure if it was because not many people have stayed in the house or because we're so far out in the middle of nature that the spiders built webs super fast. The small lake on the property is low and not really usable most likely due to the severe droughts California has been having for a long time, but it was still beautiful with dragonflies. Dinner using the grill outside on the patio of the main house is must as the evening sky darkens and the temperatures start to cool.

All in. I'd come back again. This was a great getaway.

Owner's Response: Hi David, thank you for the great review and we're so glad you enjoyed your time with us during the birthday celebrations. We absolutely love the remoteness of the property, as you can truly just get away from it all and surround yourself with nothing but vineyards and stars. Hope you're able to visit again soon. All the best.

Excellent stay

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I rented Rockpile Ranch for the weekend and had the absolute best experience. The houses are set right in the vineyard, and you have the whole place to yourself. The back deck is multi-level and very accommodating. The views are remarkable. The operations of the visit were very smooth and flowed easily. We will definitely stay here again for our next group getaway.
