Nestled in a tranquil backwater, Little Haven is a delightful 17th Century, Grade II listed thatched cottage, refurbished to an exacting standard, cosy and full of charm and character.
Situated between Minehead sea front and Dunster, the old village quarter of Alcombe lies at the foot of the Exmoor National Park and within walking distance of all local amenities. It’s a great base for visiting this wonderful, picturesque area with so many places to see and things to do.
Originally part of the Dunster Estate, Little Haven has witnessed many historic events since it was built over 300 years ago.
We bought the cottage in 2015. Whilst promising ourselves not to buy a thatched or listed building we are now the proud owners of this thatched and listed building and we have thoroughly enjoyed updating and refurbishing it.
The sitting room and dining area is open plan with a large fireplace and gas stove. The adjacent kitchen is modern and well equipped with all the mod cons. An attractive stairwell and landing takes you to the two bedrooms each with vaulted ceilings and exposed beams. They are individually furnished with king size beds with one of the rooms having an additional vanity unit. There is a downstairs bathroom with power shower over bath.
Egyptian cotton bed linen, towels, electricity and gas are included in the rental price.
Entertainment facilities include free WIFI; smart TV with freeview and catch up; DVD & CD player. There is a good selection of DVD’s, CD’s, games and books. There is also two USB charger points in kitchen.
Up to two well behaved dogs are welcome (£25 supplement) on the understanding they do not go upstairs, on the furniture or are left unattended. Dog beds are provided on request (no additional charge). There are also plenty of towels and shampoo if needed after a romp in the woods!
With views towards the wooded hillside, the pleasant fully enclosed south facing garden has both a lower patio accessed off the kitchen and an upper patio with summer house and gas BBQ. They are ideal for al fresco dining or an early evening gin & tonic! There is a shed for secure bike storage (bring your own lock) and we can’t forget to mention the warm outside tap put in especially for our four legged visitors – our two just wouldn’t accept anything less!
A plethora of glorious walks start within a few yards of the cottage. These can be short walks or the start of a day’s hike; the list of routes seems endless and would suit all levels of fitness. The mountain or road biker will not be disappointed either as there some cracking rides to be had but just be prepared for hills – for the very brave try Porlock Hill at 20% or the gentler Toll road (our favorite at an average 6%).
There are beaches within a short distance including Minehead with a large expanse of sand and great for children. It’s dog friendly between the end of September to beginning of May, whilst Dunster beach is smaller and part pebbly but dog friendly all year round. Slightly further afield (about 45 mins drive) is the award winning and stunning Woolacombe beach that has a huge expanse of sand and is dog friendly towards the north side all year round. Adjacent to Woolacombe is Croyde beach, well known for its surf and dog friendly between end of September and beginning of May.
The area caters for numerous sports including: sailing and canoeing (try Wimbleball lake); golfing at nearby Minehead which is a classic links course or try Saunton Sands (about 45 mins away) another popular challenging links course; numerous riding stables with direct access to moorland; course and river fishing; clay and game shooting opportunities.
