About Amanda Fearon

Hello my name is Amanda , I grew up in London and Sussex and currently live in a pretty downland village near Marlborough in Wiltshire with my two small dogs Charlie and Tilly. I have two grown up children and two very special grandsons.

Now in my early 60's I'm trying to pick up the interests that I have not had time to pursue during the past ten years or so which includes drawing and painting. I very much enjoy good drama and among my hobbies are photography, gardening, film , ballet, cooking , walking, history , antiques, seeing friends and family and lots more . I also enjoy going to auction houses hoping to purchase something unusual .

Amanda Fearon purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Amanda Fearon chose Pendeen

The village of Pendeen is very friendly and has very happy memories for my family and I and we all think that it is a very special place. We purchased a small former farmhouse in the village of Pendeen 34 years ago and spent many wonderful holidays in this lovely part of Cornwall with our children . Friends used to come and stay and when the children were older we rented our little farmhouse out and it proved very popular . This village has much to offer being very unspoilt and so close to the sea your are constantly reminded of how close to nature you are - being able walk out of the front door onto the coastal path in the village and to breath in the freshest of sea air is truly wonderful . We are very spoilt having two glorious beaches and a fantastic coastal path in the village so it is ideal for dogs too . I also think that being in a village when you are on holiday is a bonus especially one like Pendeen with so much on the doorstep including a village shop, two good pubs one of which has a CAMRA award , a fortnightly Farmer's Market , village ship and Post Office as well as a Doctor's surgery.

What makes this cottage unique

Dougal's Cottage has a very welcoming cosy atmosphere and this was something that struck me instantly when I was first shown the property by the estate agent . The large Inglenook fireplace is a feature of the sitting room and provides a lovely toasty heat .What is truly special about the cottage is it's uninterrupted sea views from the double bedroom and the garden at the end of which are fields and the Atlantic Ocean . When we are staying at Dougal's Cottage we feel wonderfully relaxed and return to Wiltshire feeling light headed and completely refreshed having had a good dose of fresh sea air , wonderful sleep and delicious food- we very much hope you will come and stay.

A Beautiful Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Dougal's cottage is very cosy. The view of the Atlantic Ocean from the garden is fantastic. It's very well equipped and it was a bonus to have a large tv, especially as the World Cup was on! The North Inn pub is only a few minutes away. It has a lovely garden and the food is very good as are the staff. The local shop in Pendeen is also well stocked. Boat Cove is only a short drive from the cottage and became a favourite haunt of ours as it was very quiet , dog friendly and has gorgeous views. We had an excellent week and would definitely recommend a stay in the cottage.

Lovely little cottage

  • 4 of 5

Had a lovely stay in Dougals Cottage, very tastefully decorated throughout and spotlessly clean, everything you could need during the stay is supplied and after a very long journey it was lovely to find fresh milk, coffee and teabags eating for us. The dogs loved the garden, the only slight negative I have is that the grass was quite long so was sometimes difficult to find where the dogs had ‘been’ and to pick up after them.

Owner's Response: Thank you Ernest for your review of your recent stay in Dougal's Cottage and we are delighted that you liked the cottage and had an enjoyable holiday in Cornwall . We are sorry that the grass in the garden was longer than it should have been and our gardener came to cut the grass very short two days ago . Best Wishes Amanda

An amazing week in an amazing cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We chose this place because of its isolated position in Cornwall. We were right! A few doors down and we were on the path to the Pendeen lighthouse and the beaches beyond. The cottage itself is well equipped. The view from the main bedroom is fantastic and it was a bonus to have an enclosed garden for the dog Poppy to run around in. There is a village shop which sells everything you need and their pasties are home made and recommended by visitors to the area. We had the log burner lit every day and found J and T Polglase a short distance away who supplied us with excellent dry wood. The log burner warmed the whole cottage and we had no need for the electric radiators which are supplied throughout the house. Not the cheapest heating option but oh so cosy! We spent the days walking around the coast and on our walk from Sennen Cove to Land's End we even saw a shipwreck. Penzance was only a short distance away and Long Rock beach near Marazion was the perfect place for Poppy to run around in the sea. It is dog friendly all year round. Sennen is open to dogs this year until the 1st of May although other beaches started their dog ban on the 1st April. The cottage is within walking distance of two pubs and the Geevor Tin Mine which we didn't visit on this occasion but will another day. We managed to locate Men an Tol and Lanyon Quoit too and Poppy seemed to remember she had been there before, leaping the style ahead of us. Amanda was kind enough to let us go to the cottage a bit earlier as we had driven all night and were not in the mood to explore when we got there. The night sky was a carpet of stars and we had mostly dry and quite warm weather in stark contrast to London!

We are hoping to visit Dougal's Cottage again in the future and can recommend this as a peaceful holiday retreat.

Very pretty cottage in an excellent location.

  • 5 of 5

Good location overlooking the sea and lighthouse to the rear of the property. Half a mile walk to pubs and corner shop. The cottage was very well stocked indeed - nothing was missing. And there were some very welcome extras as we arrived in a gale and as it was going dark. Being able to light a fire and have a cup of tea/glass of wine straight away was very welcoming. Also excellent set up for our dog - enclosed garden, gate to the kitchen.

Portherras Cove In Village
Car: recommended

Pendeen is a thriving Heritage village on the South West coast path situated between St Just and St Ives which is considered to be one of the most beautiful coastal drives in Europe. This area is raw Cornwall at it's best and boasts some stunning scenery , fabulous walks along the dramatic coastline dotted with former tin mine ruins and wonderful beaches including Sennen Cove which is popular for surfing . There are two stunning beaches in the village itself known as Boat Cove and Portherras Cove which nestle under granite cliffs both being within walking distance from Dougal's Cottage. Pendeen lighthouse sits majestically overlooking the Atlantic ocean. The village itself offers much for the holiday maker so you won't have to venture far if you don't want to . Close by Levant Engine House in Levant is run by the National Trust and is a fine example of the once vigorous Cornish Mining Industry. Levant features in the TV series ' Poldark'. Geevor mine which operates tours is also in the village . The Pendeen Fogou is an ancient underground chamber dating back to the1st Century BC and may be visited by permission of Pendeen Manor Farm.

Pendeen holds a Farmer's Market twice a month selling delicious local produce. The village is very fortunate as it has two pubs of it's own the award winning North Inn and The Radjel Inn . You will also find a shop selling local Pottery , a Village shop which as well as stocking every day items also offers a selection of locally sourced fresh produce . Pendeen also has a Post Office, Doctor's Surgery, Church, and Freshly Cooked to order Fish and Chips shop . For guests who enjoy eating well you will be spoilt for choice in this part of Cornwall . Within easy reach of Dougal's Cottage are some excellent restaurants and pubs which include The Gurnard's Head Pub and Restaurant , the Tinner's Arms Pub at Zennor, Ben Tunicliffe's Newlyn pub called the Tolcarne Inn serving the freshest of seafood and excellent Sunday lunches to name but a few- booking advisable. Trengwainton Gardens and shop owned by the National Trust is well worth a visit and is within an eight minute drive from the cottage - dogs are also allowed providing they are on a lead. Here you can buy plants and end your visit by a visit to the excellent Tea Room restaurant where everything is home made, serving lunches and delicious cream tea and a mouth watering selection of home made cakes. The fishing village of Mousehole and Newlyn and the beautiful Lamorna Cove home to Bernard Leach pottery are approximately fifteen minutes drive away. Pendeen is on the coastal road to St Ives passing stunning scenery , smallholdings and quaint little hamlets including Morvah and Zennor. At St Ives you will find the Tate St Ives , Barbara Hepworth Museum, numerous Art galleries, cafes and the well known Porthminster Cafe ( Restaurant) which sits comfortably on the beach and serves seriously delicious food - booking essential. For theatre enthusiasts a visit to the Minack Theatre is a must - booking essential . For golf enthusiasts Cape Cornwall Golf offers an 18 hole golf course and is approximately three miles from the cottage. There's a lot going on in and around Penzance where you can arrange to go kayaking, Rock Climbing, and swim in the newly restored open air Art Deco Jubilee Pool which is open from May to mid -September . The Penzance sailing club is based on the edge of Mount's Bay and guests can take a boat trip to hidden places where you will spot dolphins , seals basking sharks and sea bird life . Last year the well known Cornish artist Kurt Jackson opened a gallery in St Just known as the 'Kurt Jackson Foundation' tucked away down a small side which is well worth visiting. There is so much of interest to see and do in this area you may well run out of time before going home. As already mentioned Pendeen has it's own village shop , in Penzance there is a Sainsbury's superstore with cafe and pharmacy as well as a Tesco both of which have petrol stations. For Waitrose fans there is a large Waitrose in Truro approximately 45 minutes drive away
